Nice explanation. This novel is filled with the theme of friendship. Earlier I mostly looked at the colonial perspectives in the novel.

      Dear Sholakam,
If you read this book, you'll discover that Forster's work is not only concerned with the present but also with universality and the future. The novel raises the possibility that the two groups-clearly, Hindus and Muslims-could put aside their cultural differences and coexist peacefully as Indians. However, it didn't work out that way. But as the time for independence drew near, some Muslims pressed for the establishment of Pakistan, a separate Muslim state. When India gained its independence in 1947, there were bloody clashes between Hindus and Muslims that left tens of thousands of people dead on both sides. It was our tragic story.
