I wish wish wish I could have a fully self sustaining and contained system to do all this. Wind turbines, solar panels, battery packs and electric cars. Just to even get a property that I can kit out like this would be amazing. I love all these innovations!
Lovely product! Love the cooperation too re. the Tesla Powerwall. It's already great to see these technologies and innovations become available to more and more people and basically this whole field is still getting started. Can you imagine 10-15 more years of hardware, software/firmware and grid improvements? Amazing. :))
Zappi should peek into blockchain power projects and help drive individual control and community collaborative solutions that such decentralized network techs may grow into... check out Solarcoin for example..
Thank you for the kind comments. You're absolutely right, truly heart warming the support Robert and his lovely team have shown, it's been an amazing boost for the team.
Robert, just wanted you and your team to know that your videos inspired my wife and myself. We are now all solar, Nissan Leaf, Tesla powerwall and zappi! Off grid from this morning - and all because of your show! Thank you!
Awesome product and idea! Wish I'd thought of it myself! I've tried one out and it worked really well. I didn't realise all EVs have the protocol to communicate varying charge rates! - but they do and this is how the Zappi works. I was impressed how well built it was too. Really want one!
Well battery's just takes what they can get :), this just active current limits charging to the car, you could charge at a very low rate (limited by charger eff. and self power consumption) as long as you provide just more then the charger and other electronics takes
I have been looking at buying an electric vehicle recently but not knowing how to utilise my solar generation from my panels, I haven't bought one now with this new charger unit I will be fully looking at getting a electric care thank you very much. long-term subscriber very very happy with all the programs you produce
Would it be possible to set a time deadline to have the car Fully Charged™ so that if there is not enough free energy then the charger would make some calculations and just go for grid energy at the latest possible moment to make sure that the requested charge level is reached in time? Maximum energy coming from the grid is known so this should be easy to program.
Also would be great to set it to Schedule completion at a specific time, this will mean that battery will spend less time at 100% and will be warmed up so will not need to waste any energy pre heating in cold weather. 👍⚡️⚡️🚗☀️☀️ Can't wait to get one!
Went into Toyota dealer in Swansea 2 days ago saying I was interested in buying a plug in hybrid to be told "that is definitely NOT the way to go, once the battery is flat you are lugging around 250kg of dead weight." I did not even have time to mention that i) I make lots of short journeys these days, ii) I have solar panels, iii) I have a driveway so plugging a charger in is OK. This what you are up against folks. Unless you scour the web, do your own research, take nothing at face value, nobody in the mainstream is going to promote these kinds of cars. Anyway, having then wondered whether anyone makes a not-so-fast charger that matches the current to that available from my solar panels, I came across this video. Well done! Great idea for a product. Obvious with hindsight.
tbh, I found the rim for storing a garden hose the most inspiring idea in this video. The "HomePlug Green PHY" protocol was agreed on a longish time ago by all the big manufacturers. Zappi is just an implementation without anything new. This makes this video more like a product plug.
I love how well this video has aged. Great product that is now an industry standard world wide. Fully Charged always was and always will be the go to for everything ev :)
This is really cool. I live in California, where there is a lot of sun, but we don't have solar on the house. What we do have is a $6/month plan with our electric company which guarantees that 100% of our power comes from renewables. So if I want to charge an electric car at my house while emitting zero carbon, I just plug it in. Problem solved!
Brilliant series ... thanks so much for all the wonderful insights into clean energy development. This channel has certainly help me feel more and more confidant about the future and wish to work in this exciting era and industry in Australia.
Very nicely done episode. Congrats to MyEnergi for making what looks to be a very valuable management system that really works the way people need for best use of their renewable investment. Maybe you will do a version for the USA market. Please do an update video after a few months to show how it has worked out for you Robert.
This charger is really cool. Here in California you have 'peak' rates and 'off peak'. The optimal thing to do is send as much power to the grid during peak times and thus get maximum credit for it, and charge you vehicles (or use electricity in general) during off-peak times to get power as cheaply as possible. So, it's not really complicated for us, just charge the cars overnight. Btw I love "fully charged"
Faruk Carushi what's the price difference between what they pay you at peak time and what you pay them at off peak? If the former is lower than the latter you would use whatever you can of what you generate.
While a great product, there is nothing 'novel' about it. I guess with the way patents work anything can be patented, including this comment, but, realistically they're not doing anything revolutionary. To be clear, it looks like a great product, it's just not something that should be seen as an invention that needs IP protection. What they really need to do is provide a solid product with great service, and it looks like they've got at least the product side in order.
Maybe not revolutionary but I've not heard of it before. Do you know of any other examples of other car chargers that let you channel your own green energy straight to the car? ?
Zen Zen seems novel. Haven't seen this before, as they mention in the video. It is just actively adjusting the pwm (available current) on the car side, which is just a spec of the charging standard. Depending on how each vehicle follows the rules results may be varied and "interesting". We should expect most vehicles to be spot on. So that is not their invention, nor difficult, could cost a buck to add a "knob" to any evse charger. Now tracking a few power supplies and sinks and doing some math to drive the charger signal. That may or may not be novel enough, not my field of expertise, I lean heavy towards open IP practices. Their charger is comparable cost and looks like a simple, robust, extendable (was firmware updated), cleanly finished product. Hope they accounted for ramping up production.. ... I really want to give this a try now with my openevse. Not looking to use commercially, buy i would feel obligated to license the tech from zappi if I were.
A few years ago an Irish Company seemed to have a patent on the concept of using excess solar power to heat water and gave a link to their patent which I read and was appalled because they seemed to have patented the concept not an innovative piece of new technology. It was so wide ranging that it would have included car battery charging. I hope that this nonsense was challenged.
Had my Zappi installed last week (buttons were missing but they turned up the next day by post). Looks good and works nicely, although not so much solar generated recently to really leave it on the Eco++ mode. And the other benefit is that the Zappi is included under the UK government grant scheme, unlike Tesla’s charger.
Now it would interesting to see big time conglomerate companies will do, build there own version o f the Zappi, great product ever so simple to understand and it looks bang solid.
Powered microphone with a wind-dampener (a pom-pom or sock) and background cancellation. I see chest-mounted mics. It actually gets the best sound right from your chest, breast-bone.
Great to see a prog that includes updates to keep the story up to date. I saw the Powerwall episode before this one so I was wondering if the Zappi would fit into that setup and lo and behold the answer segued in - as if by magic :)
Very clever device. I wish I could get one. The problem is that, being in a warm climate here in Texas, when we got this house years ago we chose one with big trees around it to shade the sun. While this keeps our cooling bill down it really limits the practicality of solar in our location. Trees block the wind too.
Bill Kerr Not really, install the solar panels on a rack beyond the shade trees mounted on a steel or wooden frame and simply run the cables underground to the house ideally with a power wall 2 installed. For a 24 hour installation add a small wind turbine to provide power at night. Cheers!
Great to finally see this in the flesh. When my model 3 eventually shows up this will be ideal as I want to use the most efficient way of charging and like most the car will be sitting for hours at a time not moving. Small start ups like this need all our support as like Tesla Powerwall I expect their will be upgrades over time ( wi fi was mentioned ) which will be great to monitor without a hardline being wired in.
As awesome as the current version is. There is so much more potential it would blow our minds if we could predict all the possibilities merphy's law has in store. I can only imagine a few game changers.
The display was at times showing it importing upto 3.0 kW from the grid while still charging the car with 3.6 kW. It was set to ECO+ mode, so from what Jordan was saying it should have paused during those times... Why didn't it pause? I wonder if maybe that unit was running some experimental firmware, coz it wasn't doing what she said it should be doing. We never saw it pause the car charge, not even once. edit: ah, Jordan cleared up in another comment that the unit on the video was a prototype.
Awesome product MyEnergi. I’m going for 3 phase Zappi, Eddi and Harvi when it’s ready. Hope they know how to install it heer in Denmark. 😋 I’m getting 10 Kwp solarpanel on my roof next year. And a Tesla Powerwall ASAP. Can’t wait to drive on sunshine. 🌞😎👍🏻
Great to see one for a grid connection, having rigged up a much simpler one for a stand alone system (a relay controlled by the charge controller that turns on charging when my battery is almost full and off when it's a bit lower), well done. Want one!
It's really interesting how similar those plants in the background, eg. at 2:26, are so similar to native plants from Aotearoa New Zealand, especially the harakeke (flax bush) and toitoi there.
We have been using a Zappi charger for the last 6 months - drawing on rooftop solar in NSW Australia. I can confirm that it is a brilliant device. Over more than 11,000 km of use we have been 98% solar for our charging and the direct out of pocket cost for this was zero. If you have solar or wind and are thinking about an EV this is the charger you should buy. And I have no connection with the company.
In the Video it's in ECO + mode and still pulling up to 2kw from the grid. Surely that must include housing appliances otherwise it's no different to plugging in on a sunny day and setting a charge limit.
Hey, well spotted, the zappi in the early shots was a prototype and playing up a little on the day of filming (just my luck) When in eco+ mode this wont happen.
I have a load management relay from my Fronius Inverter controlling the operation of an EVSE (which I've derated so that it never pulls grid power), but this setup is more elegant and efficient.
We should all have rooftop solar on our homes, businesses and solar covered parking with net zero consumption including the charging our electric vehicles too. :D Great episode!
Great product! With this (eco mode), you can add electric car charger without the need to update your main fuse to bigger, more expensive level. You turn on your dishwasher and eco mode lowers the charge for that time.
I love the development of these electric engineering feats. However, it feels like it is hard to wrap your head around some of the more complex concepts behind EV’s and Battery infrastructure. Would it be possible for fully charged to do some video graphic explanations of some of the ways more advanced concepts like this work? Feel like it would be much more accessible to the average person to get into EV’s and renewable energy. Thanks! Much love from the US!
Jason Depenbrock couldn't hurt. Zappy has a great example of really using the evse protocol features. A simple animation would help to understand evse in general, yes.
Yes the Zappi Charger seems to be really smart and exactly what most ppl would love to have. Hopefully they can also be distributed to many other countries in the world. Good luck :-)
Bloody awesome charger, i WANT one... problem is its just a little bit overkill for my 0.5KWH electric bike battery lol, maybe in a year or 2 once i get an electric car. Definitely a really useful bit of kit.
Btw.. their homepage seems having trouble handling the load from all the visits.. i got an error message :) Waited a minute and tried again, now it worked...
This is something i have been thinking about for a long time :) Feature request! Without haveing checked the homepage, can it limit the charging speed to the car if the house pull too much power during night? To make sure the main fuses don't blow? I will check out the homepage. Nice and interessting video! Time to install even more solar on my roof and buy a second electric car and then 2 zappi chargers! ;)
fantastic I always wondered if it was possible to charge my car very slowly as I sometime dont need it for 3 or 4 days ,then just a few solar pannels will do the job.I hope we will be able to buy that product in canada.
No Robert, the cars were designed to very the charge speed up and down. It's part of the standard. .. That's why this EVSE works. The problem has been that these EVSE have been INCREDIBLY expensive...
Please do a patreon target for making episodes in Kryten costume. Specifically where Kryten charges from the Tesla automatic charging arm. Someone make a Lenny for me. I don't know what happened to the replies but if it's people getting angry for whatever reason and then blocking me someone tell them I can't see their comments when they do that.
Fair windy there Robert. Good work on keeping the audio clean.
I've tried various wind jammers and they often struggle with strongish wind. The key thing here is they must be using lav mics (with wind shields).
Exactly, through the entire ooakney series
I'm going to chip in, I was impressed by the sound vs wind as well!
I thought the same. Damn fine effort not having wind noise.
Instablaster...
I look at this and I think, what a wonderful world.
Thank you for showing all of this to us Fully Charged
I wish wish wish I could have a fully self sustaining and contained system to do all this. Wind turbines, solar panels, battery packs and electric cars. Just to even get a property that I can kit out like this would be amazing.

Well done to sound technicians. Always a pleasure, and informative watching this show. Much love to the production team!
Just want to say excellent job with the wind and the microphones on these videos.
we have a very bright future ahead of us with these technologies and people making contributions no matter how small or big to save mother earth.
Would it be possible to set a time deadline to have the car Fully Charged™ so that if there is not enough free energy then the charger would make some calculations and just go for grid energy at the latest possible moment to make sure that the requested charge level is reached in time? Diabolos1 absolutely.
Also would be great to set it to Schedule completion at a specific time, this will mean that battery will spend less time at 100% and will be warmed up so will not need to waste any energy pre heating in cold weather. 👍⚡️⚡️🚗☀️☀️
Can't wait to get one!
Yes it already has this functionality :)
Jordan Brompton Fantastic!!! You've thought of everything!!!
Jordan Brompton it's Jordan Gardiner in the video is everyone named Jordan in the Orkney islands?
The sound is unbelievebly good despite the wind Robert, congrats on that !!!! Love ya buddy
What an incredible idea and product. I hope this will be available in the states sometime.
Free charing from the wind and sun is very attractive.
Devices like this will make charging so much more *fun.*
Went into Toyota dealer in Swansea 2 days ago saying I was interested in buying a plug in hybrid to be told "that is definitely NOT the way to go, once the battery is flat you are lugging around 250kg of dead weight." Those mic shields are doing a fantastic job in the wind! Great episode and a great device.
Fabulous and British. Shared to all my social media regardless of the fact I live in a North facing ground-floor flat.
Thank you :)
Continues to be my favourite TH-cam channel. Love the production values.

Wow what a fantastic product!!
Back here after this week’s podcast, myenergi seem such an exciting company, and popping up in different markets/countries.
So cool! Also props to those microphones for not picking up any of that ruddy wind. Dead proppah
Robert, please do a review of your leaf for us now that you have used it for so many years, how is the battery, range etc.
This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! Excellent!
I love how well this video has aged. Great product that is now an industry standard world wide. Fully Charged always was and always will be the go to for everything ev :)

It just keeps on getting better!
Wow... the Zappi is a cool bit of kit... I've got so much upgrading to do!

Tesla should incorporate their ideas into its wall charger and pay them enough so that they can retire if they wish.

Thank you :)
Amazing how clean the audio is with this wind. Great viedeo and geat device!
Now it would interesting to see big time conglomerate companies will do, build there own version o f the Zappi, great product ever so simple to understand and it looks bang solid.
That small wind turbine, can you do a show about those small ones, are they noisy and the output please
Fully Charged does have an episode, "Britwind" I think, about smaller wind turbines.
Wow, that's excellent. Thanks everyone.
How on earth did you get such good audio in such crazy wind? +++
Powered microphone with a wind-dampener (a pom-pom or sock) and background cancellation. I see chest-mounted mics. It actually gets the best sound right from your chest, breast-bone.
Izotope rx7 or rx6 (old). Amazing software! living and working on a island to, I use it daily
Can't wait to see this stateside, this is really neat with Sustainable Energy sources rising up everywhere and the price of Solar Panels decreasing.
Great to see a prog that includes updates to keep the story up to date. I saw the Powerwall episode before this one so I was wondering if the Zappi would fit into that setup and lo and behold the answer segued in - as if by magic :)

I am here just to say how good your carpool show was.
This sort of smart EVSE for homes is going to be a game changer.
This looks a fantastic device. Looking forward to the app launch and will be purchasing at that point.
Costa S I'm purchasing one anyway! lol can't wait!
I'm amazed how good the sound of this video is looking how much wind is there.
Fantastic concept. Wish zappi all the best
Thank you very much.
I would like to have one. By the way, I'm finally up to date watching all the fully charged videos.
joshua smith Treat yourself! Amazing product. I'm jealous that you've seen every episode!!
What a beautiful summer day on the island.
Very smart. And a bit simpler than my method of off grid solar charging, haha. Thanks Robert, and Zappi!

Dear Sr.. You are a brilhante and great communicator. Thanks for your videos. See you....
SimonHN Would love to come and install for you!!!
Hey Simon. Were you able to get it to work in Denmark with 3 phase?
Love your show. This was particularly interesting.
The sound....AMAZING 😭😭😂🙈🙈🙊🙊🐒🐒🙉🙉💰😵😵😵 with all that wind!!!
Great to see one for a grid connection, having rigged up a much simpler one for a stand alone system (a relay controlled by the charge controller that turns on charging when my battery is almost full and off when it's a bit lower), well done. Want one!
very impressive - thank you for the video
That is a great product! Have fun :) looking forward to see the app in the future.
It's really interesting how similar those plants in the background, eg. at 2:26, are so similar to native plants from Aotearoa New Zealand, especially the harakeke (flax bush) and toitoi there.
What a great program what a great presenter .

I'm surprised I can't hear any wind at all with how wildly her hair is blowing. What an amazing microphone.
One thing I noticed is the price of chargers must have come down since the last time I checked, which is a good thing!
In the Video it's in ECO + mode and still pulling up to 2kw from the grid. Surely that must include housing appliances otherwise it's no different to plugging in on a sunny day and setting a charge limit.

Great product! With this (eco mode), you can add electric car charger without the need to update your
main fuse to bigger, more expensive level. You turn on your dishwasher and eco mode lowers the charge for that time.
That's correct, there's also the option for limiting the maximum house consumption even in fast mode.
Great start up and i hope they do well....nice
Thank you :)
Bloody Genius, with solar and electric car and motorbike Im getting one!
Looks like a great product. That smile too. Wow whatta knockout.
No, Robert. I meant her.
Ohhhh thank you very much.
I love the development of these electric engineering feats. However, it feels like it is hard to wrap your head around some of the more complex concepts behind EV’s and Battery infrastructure. Great Work Zappi Gang
Thank you :)
You asked great questions. Informative
Yes the Zappi Charger seems to be really smart and exactly what most ppl would love to have. Hopefully they can also be distributed to many other countries in the world. Good luck :-)
A smiling happy house on the display. Cute.
Bloody awesome charger, i WANT one... problem is its just a little bit overkill for my 0.5KWH electric bike battery lol, maybe in a year or 2 once i get an electric car. Definitely a really useful bit of kit.
1981therealfury if you have j1772 on an ebike... PROPS!! if you don't, use this charger as an excuse to do it.. ;)
Btw.. their homepage seems having trouble handling the load from all the visits.. i got an error message :) Waited a minute and tried again, now it worked...
Getting mine this week.
I love watching your videos!
Mmm...Tempted. Keep up the good work. Love the channel/videos.
For £500 it’s great I have to say.
Especially if this is the same price as a super charger.
Excellent idea and for a good price.
This is something i have been thinking about for a long time :) Feature request! Without haveing checked the homepage, can it limit the charging speed to the car if the house pull too much power during night? To make sure the main fuses don't blow? I will check out the homepage. Nice and interessting video! Time to install even more solar on my roof and buy a second electric car and then 2 zappi chargers! ;)
Excellent if you have the wind wonder how much solar you need to get it working properly
fantastic I always wondered if it was possible to charge my car very slowly as I sometime dont need it for 3 or 4 days ,then just a few solar pannels will do the job.I hope we will be able to buy that product in canada.
ZAPPI WINS - GREAT STUFF.
In Hawaii, there is an 18 month waiting list to get home solar PV connected to the grid. Maybe there is a market for ECO+ only Zappis in Hawaii?
Robert when are you going to do something like “Scrapheap Challenge” again. That was a really fun show. I really liked the first three seasons.
No Robert, the cars were designed to very the charge speed up and down. It's part of the standard. .. That's why this EVSE works.
The problem has been that these EVSE have been INCREDIBLY expensive...
Michael Eric Menk built my own evse for $300ish.. Doesn't have to be expensive. This is a great leveraging of the existing standards. Brilliant.
That is a dynamic charger that is programed to be smart way of charging depending on the source.
Please do a patreon target for making episodes in Kryten costume.
Specifically where Kryten charges from the Tesla automatic charging arm.
Someone make a Lenny for me.
