It was an unbelievable moment in Southampton's history. Had the Club been in a stadium like St. Mary's Keegan might have stayed and helped us to win the League Championship. Great days.

Since those days I have lived in various parts of the world, but as I watch this recollection, in 2020, of Lawrie's masterstroke, I am sitting two feet away from where I was standing way back then, in the old family house, with my brother, and both of us were struck dumb. We simply could not believe it. And although they didn't all play together, during a golden period of the 1980's the Southampton FC squad became a Who's-Who of football.

Every Southampton fan of a certain age remembers where they were when they heard Keegan had signed for us. I do. I was talking to my mate outside our house in Romsey, when my sister, who had been watching 'John Craven's Newsround', rushed down and shouted, "Kenny Dalglish has signed for Southampton!". She only knew two footballers, and she'd got the wrong one!A great day, and great memories of the best days to be a Southampton fan, with our best-ever manager, Lawrie Mac!

Laurie's time at Sunderland was disasterous - he said he would get us out of the second division but no one asked him in which direction!!

@@BG-jm4sx I don't think Lawrie would have left Saints for any other club but Sunderland, but I think he felt he had taken a relatively-small club like Southampton as far as he could. Sorry he didn't work out for you, but he's a credit to his city, so thanks for lending him to us. Perhaps, like The Titanic, he should never have left Southampton!
