That’s my mother’s last name too. I’m in the US but still have relatives by that name a bit south of me in Nova Scotia. I do love the pipes and a shot of good single malt scotch too! Thanks for the video!

I'm from the US and my mother's last name is McNeil. It comes from her German Scottish father and his dad or grandad came down from Canada. Their family name goes back to Castle Sween in Scotland that’s as far back as I could get. I’ve had a DNA test and my ethnicity is 26.5% Irish, Scottish, and Welsh, and 2.1% Scandinavian, so there was someone from a Viking country generations ago, but I think it should be more Viking if the whole clan was actually Viking and not from Niall’s brood. A DNA test doesn’t show the ethnicity of the earlier members of the MacNeil clan. How did Vikings end up with that surname if they were from Scandinavia? Was it is a custom for Vikings to change their surnames if they successfully occupied an area, or were there mixed offspring from raid rapes or later intermarriages?
Hi Danielle, it is amazing to hear you have discovered you have Scottish heritage, and so fascinating to know that your mother's last name is MacNeil. Unfortunately, we don't have any information on how Scandinavian Vikings ended up with Scottish surnames, we would recommend you speak to a genealogist to delve more in to your heritage.

My surname is McNeill with the double L so I wonder if it's the same?
Hi there! Yes, it is the same, just different branches of the same clan as they spread through the Scottish isles many centuries ago.
