- The U.S. Space Force was established in 2019, creating the first new branch of the armed services since 1947. Its mission is to protect critical assets Americans have come to depend on like GPS and weather satellites while also providing space capabilities to the joint forces. U.S. Space Force Chief Master Sergeant John F. Bentivegna joined CBS News to discuss how the branch is used.

I remember a lot of ridicule from the mainstream over the space force being created.
It wasn’t created, it was broken out from under the Air Force. The criticism came mostly from the Pentagon in the belief it would create more bureaucracy.
The space force was created under Trump, which anything and everything he did faces ridicule.
Very true. Everyone made jokes about it (which I always thought was very short sighted) but you can see they could easily become even more integral than the Navy in the future. Not that the navy is unimportant but the rapid advancement in other areas may make it less important.

Space Force is its own entity, and some assets from the Air Force and Navy combined to bring it along after it was created - much like they did for the Cyber Command. The criticism came from the media who mocked Trump relentlessly about the need for it. The Pentagon controls all branches - why the hell would they give af if another branch was created - answer - they don't - it means more money for them.
I can already see the day where a space force has their own astronauts.
Much sooner then we probably realize to be honest. I expect with the trend, by the 2030s, they should have their own astronaut program, no doubt.
i think they have their own program...? NASA takes years to go from admission to spaceflight. if they started when soon after trump announced they could be paying for seats any day now and be prepared to do whatever they wanted in the 30s.

the idea of the USSF as a free standing organisation has been slowly gathering steam since Eisenhower's time. We can't really say any of the 3 most recent presidents can claim credit for it, Trump being the one to actually perform the signing notwithstanding@lisaroberts8556

@@rapid9534 I Love the Cope from Liberals. Who were adamant. (Space Force was a Stupid Idea) Now if history serves me right. The idea of Space Based Weapons goes back to the 60’s. But only gained traction in the 80’s with President Reagan who talked about the Star Wars Program 💫 🇺🇸 And in the Cold War Build up of the Reagan 80’s, The Star Wars Program was front and center of the USA’s new strategic thinking. Eventually the Soviet Union Collapsed. And programs like Star Wars were halted. Many Liberals opposed the idea of US Spaced Based Weapons. Notable names such as Senator Kennedy Bernie Sanders to name a few. Were hugely against the idea. Eventually the Reagan Administration ended. We’ve had four different Administrations since the 80’s. It was clear US technology was eclipsing the Soviet Union and the Soviets expressed their fear of SDI during the Reykjavik Summit with Pres.Reagan
But as time marched on it was also starting to look like the Soviet Union was no more. But Russia was still pursuing and trying to bridge that technology gap with advancements in Rocket Technology. Four Administration kept the US in limbo with respect to the late 70’s SALT treaty to limit our Missile Programs. #1 being Don’t Weaponize Space? However That treaty didn’t stop Russia nor rapidly growing CCP from doing just that. Four American Presidents came after Bush, Clinton (Who gutted the program) Bush 42 and Obama all froze the US Space Technology Program. Dozens of Democrats paused all US efforts to maintain its edge in Space and in particular. Our advanced Space Based Weapons Program. None would Rubber Stamp the program. As with any Weapon Program it could be defunded just like Obama did with many of our Missile Programs. So if all the follow on Presidents since Reagan didn’t see SDI as a priority? Why not make it harder to destroy such a program. And make a new Branch of the Military. Trump made Space Force USA 🚀🇺🇸

There's nothing at the Sea of Tranq, it was chosen for being the flattest, most boring possible location to land to reduce risk. The first battle will likely be over Shackleton Crater.

And that's okay. As the highest rank NCO of the Space Force, he's been briefed on what he can and cannot say on the air. 20 years ago, I had some military friends who worked on robots and they were interviewed on a news/ science segment which showed their names- It was okay back then too.
Okay now ask him about UAPs.
That's not really a Space Force thing that's a whole other branch of the DoD.

Imagine the revolution in space technology that we’re about to see. I wish it wouldn’t be for militaristic purposes, but this is going to be amazing.
If only we had a national agency of government that could handle space technology that isn't completely military focused.... we could name it something like National Aeronautics and Space Administration... NASA for short!! Imagine all the amazing technology we could make with such a program.
NASA was used for military purposes since its inception. Just to give an example, the GPS satellites were originally created and used only by the military, this was later opened up to the public *with restrictions*. We've also been tracking foreign objects in orbit for decades. I don't understand why we need a new branch of the military for this besides another reason to give more funding to our military complex instead of NASA, who work under a more neutral stance.
This new branch is only asking for trouble. I foresee other nations looking at the space force as a threat and are going to retaliate with another space race, this time sending as many weapons into space as possible.
Did you know the U.S. Army have a Space Command and an Astronaut program? Ditto for the Navy. The Space Force just CONSOLIDATED the various DUPLICATATIVE elements and placed it under one command.

Unfortunately there's no stopping this that's why it's very important for everyone to watch the ISS movie. The space stations are also very important when it comes to defeating pestilence as you can experiment with different strands and look for a cure for all diseases if not already assessed.

To the people making fun of the space force, remember when the Air Force was created it was one of the most ridiculed military sectors, people thought it was ridiculous we were spending so much money around “trying to put guns in the air” because of course we would never be able to fly anything heavier then a couple guns.
Today the Air Force is one of the most powerful and one of the fastest growing sectors of any military on earth.

It was actually a very smart idea because space is becoming critical to countries, exploration, communications, and weapons tech are all critical to protecting the USA and its foray into space ..As we grow and begin to build living areas and mining operations on the moon and mars it will be all the more critical.

As noted by CBS, mocked when Trump created it and, as Chief notes: "Since it was established in 2019, the amount of objects in orbit have grown about 70%". Some pretty important foresight when it comes to Trump, as per usual. If I was Trump I'd use this in my debate against Biden and in campaign ads. The only thing Biden has accomplished is... well, um.... the worst U.S withdrawal from a war in American history, and.... making tax payers pay for the healthcare of the millions of illegals who have been let in during his administration, and... making us pay for privileged college student debt despite the fact that because of their degrees they will land jobs that put them at least in the 100k per year bracket?

I am an Army vet, this guy is effectively the Space Force equivalent of the Sergeant Major of the Army. They are enlisted or non-commissioned. Don't let that fool you, these individuals have had the capability to become a general, their personal values dictated otherwise. I once met CSM Jordan, I wondered if he would make SMA, but at the same time, he was in an incredibly respected position.

Well, destroying space, that's a new one. Study astrophysics, and you will realize how much space there is, and that it is indestructible so far as we know. If you mean clutter and junk, we are already reducing that and will have much better capabilities in the future. Try to keep your glass half full, and your life will keep improving. Do the opposite and you can imagine what will happen. If you want to learn, ask, I am exceptionally well versed in all things physics.

It's really sad that these reporters still have the giggle factor and acting like high school children when reporting on the space force. The questions they asked are 9th grade questions and they acted as if this whole segment was directed towards young kids instead of everyone. That childish behavior is what is stunning the growth of the space force and young people willing to join the space force when they get older. CBS needs to choose some other people to report on this topic, and they need to ask some really serious questions about our adversaries and what the space force has been doing since it's been established. There are a ton of questions that could be asked, it's not every day that you get a four-star general and are able to ask them whatever you want on behalf of the American public geezz 🤦♂️
