The majority of Culture Club's songs are about Boy George's relationship with the drummer, Jon Moss. It was a very turbulent, and sometimes violent, relationship. All of that chaos created some of the best songs to come out of the 80's. I'm a rock/metal musician, but I LOVE this band.
I have two versions of that song on my playlist one by Culture Club and the other by the Violent Femmes. I probably spent 25 years listening to both versions but they sound so different it just never occurred to me if they were the same song until one day I was listening to a podcast where Gordon Gano was being interviewed when the subject of cover songs came up and he mentioned that they had done this cover of Culture Club song. I like this version of Do You Really Want to Hurt Me just fine but I think I actually prefer the Violent Femmes version of this song. Still I don't know how it never clicked in my head that it was actually a cover of the Culture Club song.
Culture Club just has AMAZING hits: Time (Clock of the Heart), I'll Tumble 4 Ya, Miss Me Blind, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, The War Song....deep rabbit hole here 😎
Oh boy! Boy George! MTV wouldn't have been the same without him. Great sound, great voice. So much fun! So different than anything else at the time. Awesome!
It's about being used by someone. "You come and go, you come and go". He was writing about their drummer, who was hiding the fact he was gay and they were a couple. Very creative how he made the song sound innocent with the play on words.
I remember they won an award and accepted by video. Boy George said “ Thanks America Knows A Good Drag Queen When They See One”. 🤣 A really great band.
George Alan O'Dowd (born 14 June 1961), known professionally as Boy George, is a British singer, songwriter, disc jockey, fashion designer, photographer and record producer. He is the lead singer of the pop band Culture Club. At the height of the band's fame, during the 1980s, they recorded global hit songs such as "Karma Chameleon", "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" and "Time (Clock of the Heart)". George is known for his soulful voice and his androgynous appearance. He was part of the British New Romantic movement which emerged in the late 1970s to the early 1980s. His music is often classified as blue-eyed soul, which is influenced by rhythm and blues and reggae. His look and style of fashion was greatly inspired by glam rock pioneers David Bowie and Marc Bolan. Wikipedia.

Culture Club was the quintessential 80's band...Completely unique with more than a few classic songs jammed into their relatively short career...Their ace in the hole was, of course, Boy George...When the song "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" came out, we just couldn't quite figure out what to make of him...The make-up and the clothes made you blink a few times, but his unmistakable voice was awesome and was what made the group special...
"Do you really want to hurt me" is a Must...Boy George fascinated me from day one on...he did not care, what other people that about his make-up and outfits...he stayed true to himself.☮
"Boy George" has agreat voice. I think he's the first male singer I saw all done up in make up. He has pretty eyes. BJ got the true meaning. Culture Club had some good songs. "Time" (Clock of the Heart) good groove. Check that one out and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me".
I tuned out in the '80s, but this song made it to my ear anyway. "Church of the Poison Mind" another brilliant one. "Changing Everyday" is another great, great feel-good song.
Shoot, I forgot to put "Miss Me Blind" on the list. That's a great one! All their songs were great!! And also "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me". And "Church of the Poison Mind" is a banger!
George has that great soul full R&B voice. He still performs today and has done "The Voice" Australia the past 6 years. Great Culture Club song to hear are "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" (1982) and "Time" (1982).
Wow! Here I am at 60 years old I was a disc jockey in the 80s playing this music here is 2022 I just now figured out the meaning of this song, vinyl Can make it hard to understand and now we have video that song has been on video since the 80s but I still just now figured it out thank you Asian & BJ. 👍
That was filmed on the river Thames not on the Mississippi but I’m sure you’ve worked that one out. It’s actually Kingston upon Thames and I live there. I also worked on that boat when I was a young man. The boat is still being used to this day.
Time, Church of the poison mind, Do you really want to hurt me, The War Song, Miss me blind...Culture Club is a deep rabbit hole of hits!!! Love you guys reactions!
I can only guess the "pickpocket" in this wonderful video represented his on-again, off-again lover who took a lot from him and kept leaving and coming back. Great symbolism. Fantastic voice and a fun song.
Now imagine being a child in the early 80’s and seeing the likes of Boy George and the way he dressed on mtv for the first time 😂 our parents were outraged and we were entranced. Great music and flamboyant styles 😍
Yes. I was about 20 when they came with their first album and I remember being mesmerized by his eye shadows and makeup. I had never dreamed I’d doing all that-but it wasn’t long before I started trying to do his makeup.🤣😂😆😜. And I was disappointed because even though he was a guy-he STILL was prettier than me, a girl.🤣😆😎. I love their music. I am as straight as can be, but for some reason, I never judged his obvious gay sexuality.👏🏼👍🏼💪🏼🥰. It was who he is and I loved him just as he was. Don’t forget-this was around 1981 and most gay people were still in the closet. But Boy George wasn’t, and no one cared. It was because he was such a sweet guy. Everyone could just tell. He is an amazing person.😎🙌💪🏼👏🏼❤️
BJ nailed it.So many great tones.(Doyou really want to hurt me)(Church of the Poisoned mind)(Miss me Blind)(Crying Game)(War)(It's a Miracle).Plus others.
This was a #1 hit for them! Other hits: Time, Miss Me Blind, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, Church Of The Poison Mind, I'll Tumble 4 Ya, It's A Miracle, Move Away, The War Song, Victims, Mistake No. 3.
This song is routinely stuck in my head. A few years ago I made my wife listen to it and it got stuck in her head. She started singing at work absentmindedly which in turn got it stuck in the heads of all of her coworkers. Now all I have to do is mention it and everyone there is tormented like I am 🤣
No doubt y’all will be wandering around the house singing, at least humming, this for a bit- be prepared! 😂. It’s just inevitable- next I’d do “Do you really wanna hurt me” and “Time (clock of the heart.”) Other MASSIVE hits of theirs- 💖💙✌️👍
My childhood crush was Boy George. His voice and his style was everything to me. My favorite songs were "Ill tumble For ya", "Do you really want to hurt me" and "I know you miss me".
The lead singer is Boy George. The speculation is that George was in a relationship, and the other guy wasn't fully out to his family and everyone. He kept waffling about his decision. So this was pointed towards him, and ended up causing George to stop trying to get him to commit to a real relationship. The story the video told showed us about karma too. Obviously.
Step outside of all you've heard by George and Culture Club and check out George's solo effort called Cheapness and Beauty. It was such a complete and total departure from anything he'd ever done before. It was totally ignored but it's worth a listen. As for Culture Club, dig a little deeper into the first two albums. Try non-singles, like White Boy or Love twist on the first album. Second album, Mister man was a good one. Dive in guys. This was another good one, y'all.
I love Boy George!! I had the album and played it over and over again! They got to be in New Orleans, lol!! They got so many great songs. Do "Time" and "I'll Tumble for You" next! They are such a fun band and I love to hear Boy George sing!
The first time I ever laid eyes on Boy George was watching Muchmusic in Canada at university. I'm was in the floor lounge with the guys and "Time, Clock of the Heart" (the video) comes on and I saw Boy George not knowing who he was. My comment was "she's kinda cute; who is she?" and everyone in the room looked at me and smiled. One guy answered "that's BOY George". I looked blankly at him and then back at the TV. I knew it was going to be awhile before I lived that one down. I still think Boy George was cute and had great style as well as a great voice. Go figure!! TeeHee
I luuuuv Boy George...hands down the man can sing and he's an accomplished and talented musician among many other things!!! This jam is on my fav list...!!! Other songs of his... "Time" , "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?", "Miss Me Blind"...
His surname is O'Dowd. I'm sure Boy George never boxed, but he came from a big family and many of them boxed, his family had a reputation for being hard.
This video played on MTV all the time and the song got played at parties and in clubs or people were dancing and so forth. I was in too much harder stuff but so many of my friends liked it, including my gay friends, and they really were pretty good so I don't mind it. It actually sounds better to me today than it did back then.
Miss Me Blind by Culture Club. It crossed over to R&B charts in '84. Also his first solo hit "Don't Take My Mind On A Trip" by Boy George produced by Teddy Riley. That crossover to R& B radio & clubs in '89.❤

That would be my #1 of Culture Club and Boy George!

Trend setter and great vocals. Boy George was and is one of a kind.
Trend setter 🤣

“Time (clock of the heart)” is another great Culture Club classic. 👍
Definitely a classic.
The Groove in that track is undeniable. Love that over Karma Chameleon.

Still ridiculously catchy after all these years. I have NEVER heard someone say that they didn't like this song. Universally loved.
