Back in the 60's there was a hobo camp not far from the house, as kids we used to collect pop bottles and leave them at the camp, 5 cent deposit. Some would find odd jobs to do for a couple of days then move on, one fella came through quite often I remember him as Jack, he helped my dad build a tool shed. Nicest guy you could ever meet, the stories he told was much like the ones you tell, better than TV back then. We were always told we can talk to the hobo's, but stay away from the bums.
I'm on the mountain directly across from you today, Raccoon Mountain. Beautiful views from both. They have a big reservoir up here that stores water that they can use to produce more power during peak usage. Also tons of bike and hiking trails. Chattanooga is truly a wonderful place for those that love the outdoors.
We had a reservoir like that near Sonora Ca. During off peak hours they pumped the water back uphill and then during peak hours let it run down through turbines to make electricity.
Could You just Imagine how Beautiful it would have been there during The Fall Colors when in there Prime Time WOW Amazing it must have been Enjoy your Trip Brother and Becareful and Safe
Booger Holler!!! I've been there, up hwy 7 out of Russellville. Did you ever go up as far as Sand Gap? Ir you take a right there on Hwy 16 you go over through Ben Hur and past there are forest service roads that lead in to the national forest to Richland Creek, where there is a campground at the creek. Across the creek is a trail head into the Upper Richland Wilderness area. Beautiful, Rugged Country!!! My goodness, seems you have been just about EVERYEHERE!!! Thanks for sharing your travels!!!

Great video Shoestring. I was there last year and rode the incline railroad and also saw Ruby Falls. I hear they got new cars for the incline this year. I would love to go back and check them out. I have traveled highway 7 many times from Russellville to Harrison. It's a beautiful drive, especially around the Jasper area. I have lived in central AR all my life. Recently subscribed. You mentioned being able to "see Kentucky on a clear day". I've done quite a bit of homework on those mountains (Chattanooga native). The mountains that you can see from Point Park are way out east. Talkin' bout 40 miles. You can see Big Frog Mountain and The Oswald Dome out in Polk County, TN. Look a little more toward 90 degrees dead east and you can see Grassy Mountain and Fort Mountain in Murray County, GA.
Awesome place to be! The last time I was up there i tried to focus on a freight train and couldn't keep the camera steady because of the wind. You did a better job at it. Lol
I stayed in Bristol TN for a half year once, beautiful state. You got a great view up there. This video reminds me of those days. Good video, brother. God bless you and stay safe.
Nice video Shoestring. That was actually CSX's mainline you were looking at. Norfolk Southern's mainline would be hard to see because it is actually tapered against the foot of the mountain and goes through a tunnel on the side of the mountain.
My mom was born on lookout mountain. Been to points park bunches. Uncles worked at Rock City, Ruby falls, not sure about the incline railway. Back in the day people got to town on the incline. My great uncle ran moonshine on lookout mountain yeah I had taste but it's from cousin brew. Good stuff the colder it was the smoother it was . Best way to drink shine cold put it in the freezer. I went to school on lookout one year . I think the building was and old ccc camp . We set in class in early 70s Dynamite explosions you could feel it in your seat. I think they were building roads across the mountain I can't remember. But it was pretty regular. Times sure have changed sence I was a kid. The interstate system wasn't thier growing up. My dad from west Tennessee. We made the trip it was two lane hwy . It was more scenic I loved it . Souvenir shops on the two lane had a bear in a cage we fed it. Today's tourism in Tennessee is not what it used to be everything was so much prettier the mountains were not scarred from interstate construction. I remember the old shacks my uncle's had. My mother brother built a log cabin to live in I think he had 100 acre's out at cloudland canyon it's still in the family. Talk about nostalgia . My mother's people were mountain people . My grand daddy was in the army world war one or two I wasn't born yet I seen pictures him in uniform wasn't a snapshot it was a military photograph. Thiers something about those times as a kid . Every one had more freedoms back then. Hell five dollars worth of gas get you almost a full tank. I'm not talking economy car. Cars use to be like tanks all metal big interior. It was like driving down the hwy in your living room. I had the two cousin's they were older than I .back in 70s I was at grand parents on lookout mountain they pulled up on choppers . Thier girlfriend's on the back hippies . bikes were loud this was around the time of Woodstock. No electric start kick start. This was funny the two cousin's were brother's. They were small guys kinda reminds you of Bruce Springsteen back in his young days in his jeans on stage. But anyway my cousin trying to kick start the chopper. He couldn't get it turn over fast enough. His girlfriend was bigger than he was she had to kick start it for him 😂 it was the funniest dam thing. She started it for him then he drove. She wasn't a hevy girl look pretty dam good. They were in thier twenties peace signs hanging around thier necks leather vest . We didn't get a picture that I'm aware of. But it stuck in my head . They lived the life of the 70s I'm not sure if he served in Vietnam but he was in the military. For a spell. He was pretty good dude aways had a smile well both of them actually. They had it rough coming up different dad's born in Chicago and Fox lake . I never seen them get up set about anything it was like shit happens. Nothing got them down that I know of. Shoestring, when you pointed your camera toward a plant that you couldn’t identify, that place is called Buzzi Unicim USA. I used to deliver shredded tire chips to them and they would feed them into their kilns to make the fire hotter. Great way to get rid of the waste.

I've been up there that's why it's called the Battle Above the Clouds Lookout Mountain did you go into Ruby Falls. I spent some time in Arkansas myself I know Route 7 up through booger Hollow into Springfield, Missouri.

You forgot to copy-paste the next sentence from Wikipedia, which points out that this claim is total BS. The nearest point in Virginia is nearly 150 miles away: it's impossible to see that far because of the curvature of the earth. Kentucky is over 110 miles to the north and South Carolina is about the same distance: again, that's impossible to see because of the curvature of the earth. There are some mountains about 60 miles to the east in North Carolina that could theoretically be seen; again, atmospheric haze is likely to stop that, in reality. Shoestring, 00:45 is CSX. Also, at 08:05 that is the south end of CSX Wauhatchie Yard. Track to the left goes into the yard, right goes up the main. Great video, but I think the little town of Dalton, Georgia is most likely Ringgold or Ft. Oglethorpe. Dalton is about 25 miles south of Lookout Mountain.

That's what the overlook in Rock Point claims, yes. But VA, SC and KY are simply too far away to see because of the curvature of the earth. On a clear day, you might be able to see some mountain peaks in NC but even they're about 60 miles away, so the slightest haze will obscure them. Also, from that overlook, AL is behind you and obscured by Lookout Mountain itself. From where Shoestring is, you can see AL, TN, GA and potentially those peaks in NC.
I've never been up there shoestring but can say that I've driven by several times on the way to get firecrackers if you ride back home from here i hope to maby see you i live just before the Morristown tn siding

We have a similar lookout in New Zealand called Mount Te Aroha. The name Te Aroha translates to love, which is what you feel when you look out on your land

I've been up there that's why it's called the Battle Above the Clouds Lookout Mountain did you go into Ruby Falls. I spent some time in Arkansas myself I know Route 7 up through booger Hollow into Springfield, Missouri.

You forgot to copy-paste the next sentence from Wikipedia, which points out that this claim is total BS.
The nearest point in Virginia is nearly 150 miles away: it's impossible to see that far because of the curvature of the earth. Kentucky is over 110 miles to the north and South Carolina is about the same distance: again, that's impossible to see because of the curvature of the earth.
There are some mountains about 60 miles to the east in North Carolina that could theoretically be seen; again, atmospheric haze is likely to stop that, in reality. So, in reality, you can see Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and maybe a tiny bit of North Carolina on the horizon.
Shoestring, 00:45 is CSX. Also, at 08:05 that is the south end of CSX Wauhatchie Yard. Track to the left goes into the yard, right goes up the main. Southbound Atlanta trains will swap about 1,000ft North of that point, or you'll see the rear of a northbound train sitting there, swapping crews headed to Nashville.

Great video, but I think the little town of Dalton, Georgia is most likely Ringgold or Ft. Oglethorpe. Dalton is about 25 miles south of Lookout Mountain.

VA, NC, SC, TN, KY, GA and I think AL. A must place to visit when in Chattanooga
That's what the overlook in Rock Point claims, yes. But VA, SC and KY are simply too far away to see because of the curvature of the earth. On a clear day, you might be able to see some mountain peaks in NC but even they're about 60 miles away, so the slightest haze will obscure them. Also, from that overlook, AL is behind you and obscured by Lookout Mountain itself. From where Shoestring is, you can see AL, TN, GA and potentially those peaks in NC.
