    Finally...after 10 hours over a couple of months I got it picked! 5 serrated 5 spools. Wonder why only five pins when there's room for six?

      @mmichaud08 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BeatsFromDP someone found one in a locker room and gave it to me. I probs spent about a combined hour and a half at work messing with it. First time picking one with security pins. Sure feels nice once you get it.

      I'm guessing it originally shipped with a 5 pin key. I heard American Lock charge extra for a 6 pin keyed lock but I'm in the UK and have to import these, so I don't know how it looks at USA retail level. Anyway I seem to recall Bill uploading a video where he takes one of these cores and adds a keypin to ride on the tip of the key in slot 6. So it would also need to be picked to shear, but anyone only looking at the key might assume there are just 5 pins and struggle to get in. It's a great trick, using all 6 chambers to get the best out of the hardware.

    I'm a super beginner- just ordered my first picks and torsion wrenches from Peterson- and I have this same lock (sans flag logo). Since I'd long since lost the key, I'd thought I'd start out with this- then you mentioned spools.
    The moans of horror only got louder when you started pulling out serrated pins hand over fist.

    none of my american locks have wafers, i called up a bunch of local locksmiths and nobody has em and a few didn't know what i was talking about. one guy was funny he said "i been doing this 18 years and i never heard of this, who makes that tool?" i said "sparrows, peterson" then he said, "hold on a sec.... i don't have any wafers in stock."

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      www.mrlock.com has them really cheap.

    • @bird718
      @bird718 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrlock.com also charged $9 shipping, .90cents for 10 wafers is nice but throw in $9 shipping and i feel like i'm being ripped. i'll find it local sooner or later, funny thing is all the locksmiths i called that day were either clueless or playing stupid except for 1 guy that told me nobody is going to hav e em and that he can order em for me. i'll support my local locksmith rather then pay someone $9 to put a few wafers in a white envelope with a forever stamp.

    I managed to open a 5200 with the longer shackle with a nail and a bobby pin. And I gutted it to make sure it was not a defective one with shallow serrations.

    • @13Jimdp
      @13Jimdp 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bosnianbill I have been trying to pick it for 2 days. I think the third pin is what is holding me back. It is so tall that it's nearly at the shear line with no key. I think I am over setting it every time. What I did is put No. 3 in by itself and I still over set it. You may laugh but this is my first lock to try with security pins. I've only been picking about a month.

      @@darenmiller2218 I do have a set of Sparrows lock picks. They do make it considerably better than homemade picks. But this lock has eluded me since I started. Do you have a key that will open the lock? I'm thinking if we can disassemble the core and only leave 1 set of pins in and try to pick it get used to how it feels, then add another and try, then another and so on.

  • @mr.highschoollocksmith6080

    This might sounds weird. But for some reason my 5200 just won't let me tension the core. I am very... And I mean VERY new to this. But I feel like I understand enough of what's going on to know that for my 5200 it isn't tensioning.

    I know this is a old video.. But after seeing this i went and bought one of these. Majorly disappointed. After opening it way too easy, i decided to take it apart. It has 1 security pin in the #1 position. Al the rest are standards. Highly disappointed. Makes me want to make a challenge out of it. The date code on it is QNJF5. I was looking for a lock full of serrated pins to practice on. Do you have any recommendations?

      find an old lock, pre master lock

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bird718 is right. After Master took over the production line for American padlocks, they changed the cores and dumbed down the pinnings.

    Hi, Is there anyway that I could send you a 5200 series lock to pick? I’ve tried hundreds of times I just can’t pick it, I can’t pick American locks at all I’ve tried many of them, I picked one once. I would send a stamp or a label so you could send the lock 🔒 back to me.

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No way! That is YOUR lock and it has some important lessons to impart. The only way you will learn them is to practice on that lock until you figure out how to deal with serrated pins. If you send it to me to open, NEITHER of us will learn anything...😋 Never give away a lock that you have not opened, otherwise you forfeit whatever secrets it holds for you. Oh yeah, you'll never get better either.

    • @davidooch
      @davidooch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bosnianbill, thanks for getting back to me. Do you have another website where you communicate with people? Like where I could send you pictures of the pic and tension wrench that I’m using and you tell me if it’s good or not. I’ve tried to pick American locks hundreds of times with success one time. I have collected about 30 quality American locks (not made by master lock) and I just can’t pick them. And I swear I’ve tried hundreds of times for hours on end over the course years.
