    I just wanna clear this up because it tends to come up: the fast sweep arpeggio pattern at the beginning and end of the song is played live by doing it several times and then tapping that into a loop pedal and then Tosin goes back to other parts. People seem to think hes cheating without realizing loop pedals are a thing

    • @m__zombi
      @m__zombi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      And loop pedals aren’t the easiest things to use either. If you mess up your timing even slightly it sounds like hot garbage

    Well.. this is awkward. I have always avoided this band for some reason thinking of ''nah, this is not for me'' without actually listening to them basically at all. Guess how dumb I feel now?

      I thought the same thing after i saw play-through of the drummer playing on of their songs on a drum lesson channel. When i really listened to their music, I instantly become obsessed. they are absolute masters of their instruments.

    I love Animals As Leaders. I was introduced to them back in 2010 by an old roommate. Truth be told, I believe Javy Reyes is the one playing the bass line in their music.
    If you like them here, check out Javy's band Mestis. Try Mt. Pleasant from Mestis. Youl have a chance to hear hin in his own fronting role.

  • @rofyle

    Yes! I've been waiting for this one.
    2010 was a year of grand experimentation and new breakthroughs in metal. Devin Townsend had released Addicted.
    Meshuggah had released Alive.
    Jinjer had just formed. Animals As Leaders broke onto the scene.

    The drums on this track and the whole album were actually programmed by periphery guitarist misha mansoor. Check that band if you haven’t. They got their permanent drummer on the next album and honestly, he’s better than this by quite a bit.
    Also, meshuggah are the true grandfathers of djent. You need to hear them if you haven’t.

    This has the structure of a symphony, with several movements and some underlying themes that connect them. All in 6 minutes. It's mind blowing. By the way, Tosin is self-taught.

  • @RogerLaLoutre
    @RogerLaLoutre 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    And as time passed with these guys, each member's influence on the others starts to be heard in the songs (this first AaL album was basically a solo project from Tosin Abasi, the 'lead' guitarist)
    So I want to suggest Javier Reyes' (the other guitarist) solo project, Mestis. It sounds reaaaal good.
    Also yes, they're still together, though the drummer in this video, Navene Kopperweis, isn't in the band anymore and has been replaced by Matt Garstka, who is, in my opinion, one of the best drummers around.

    Animals as leaders started djent? You make a big number out of this being an 11 years old track? Bro, Meshuggah is the godfather of djent and they created this style back in the 80s.

      Also Periphery popularized it before AAL. Misha Mansoor also programmed the drums on this track. Still Tosin Abasi is one of the most influential guitarists alive.

    • @Dragonfly9307
      @Dragonfly9307 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      AAL, Periphery, Tesseract for the 2010's and leading up to the 2010's which is so far the golden age of djent and renaissance of metal. What I mean is the expansion of defining what djent can be. Meshuggah was chugging earlier but AAL brought funk and Spanish classical. Tesseract added saxophone and almost bebop style with an uncommon priority on clean vocals. Periphery is kinda the popularizer with pop like hooks as an entry point into metal for some. These bands set up what djent would be turned into through the 2010's. What djent is now is a much broader concept that almost needs sub-genres because of how much it has been expanded. Now it's almost anything that isn't purely classic metal.

    All three of them are unbelievably talented!... In my opinion, technically, creatively, there is none better.. none... I'm a musician, and when a buddy of mine introduced me to AAL in 2009 it was really hard to continue to write music.. like what's the fuckin point?!... 😅

    Now that you mention it- Tosin Abasi is like the future cyborg version of Vernon Reid from living Color- experimental and unique. But Vernon is a master improviser while Tosin is a master composer(not saying Vernon couldn't compose).

    Been listening to these guys for many years, seen them live as well, of course they can deliver. Drummer in this video is Navene Koperweis, which is one of my favorite artists, but which has been replaced by Matt Garska. He has produced awesome metal so far, besides AAL (Animosity, Fleshwrought, Entheos) and he's pretty good at guitar as well and electronic music (check Navene-K). Regarding the guitars, Tosin Abasi is well known for his unique style using bass techniques among other stuff, but Javier has a ton of influence over the sound of AAL. Just give a listen to his project, Mestis, really worth it.
    Still, I'd say that Planet X kind of blows this out of the water. Their "Moonbabies" album was released in 2002, so almost 20 years ago.

    You like prog you say? Check this thing: Tigran Hamasyan - Drip (Berklee Middle Eastern Fusion Ensemble Studio Recording)
    (hey, they have two drummers, 6-string bass and a 7-string guitar, I think it qualifies as metal of sorts. And it's heavy af)
    This is what happens if you have classical pianist who grows up with Meshuggah, and a bunch of people who likes technicality in music in one place : )
    Also, he did at least one track with Tosin from AaL, so that too.
