    They didn’t face death threats. This type of message wasn’t controversial in 1991 at all. I think we were almost more tolerant in 1991 than the shit we’re seeing today.

      Politically correctness has destroyed creativity. People are always afraid to speak their mind and constantly think twice or more before saying something in order to avoid hate messages or other repercussions. Nowadays songs like this or "God Save the Queen" by Sex Pistols would be unthinkable.

      @M. M. Monroe - I'm with you. I was born in 1949 and today's world is very scary. The earth is being treated like we have a spare in the trunk. The current social instability and unrest, radical nationalism, racism, sexism, tribalism, religiosity and incivility is frightening. If people aren't afraid, they should be.

      Live Aid is not even close to their 'best' live performance.. It wasn't even Queens biggest concert that year. They played to around 350,000 people ,prior to Live Aid in Rio De Janiero,, two nights running.

    I really enjoyed your intelligent and thoughtful analysis of this, probably my favourite Queen song. Not every song by Queen has a deep and meaningful message but when they do they are so good.Other songs that have powerful lyrics are 'Is This The World We Created?', 'Who Wants To Live Forever?' and 'One Year of Love' (just a small sample)

  • @HelenaDax

    I don't think they really had to face any backlash for this song: the message of Innuendo isn't that far from the message in Lennon's Imagine, for example. Fans liked it, not-fans didn't listen to it and the press was disgustingly more interested in Freddie's private life than in Freddie's songs.

    • @williamg209two

    Holy Crap! Listen to that voice. No one can touch Freddie. You talk about a political message that is very much overlooked. "Hammer to Fall" is about the cold war and telling the people to hang on and play their game and in time the Hammer, meaning the Soviet Union, will eventually fall. Queen was the first Western Band of any kind to play behind the Iron Curtain when they went to Budapest in 1986, (Check out that Concert), where they sang "Hammer to Fall".

    • @montrelouisebohon-harris7023
      @montrelouisebohon-harris7023 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yessss that voice!! Freddie Mercury was dying and this was probably recorded about a year or a little over a year prior to his death. Brian said even if Fred could come into the studio an hour or two at a time a couple times a week that Freddie was able to get a lot done then and then he will get tired and have to go home and rest.

  • @DarkSektori
    @DarkSektori 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Ahh yes Innuendo, the last album made by Queen when Freddy was still alive. Recorded in late 1989 early 1990 it was the album's first single released in January 1991 and when released went straight to #1 on the UK charts #17 in the US and was in the top 5 in several countries throughout Europe . This video was made in November 1990 I think. The second longest track in Queen's discography behind Bohemian Rhapsody. The Spanish Flamenco Guitar in the middle was done by Steve Howe from the band "Yes"
    The song itself was recorded live in the studio too, I think at Mountain Studio in Montreux in the main casino hall which is quite interesting.

    Many people are blind and don't see that you don't have to be a taugh rapper to pass a relevant message to your audience. If you like this kinda message, try Hammer to fall. It is about growing up under the threat of a nuclear war during the Cold war. It is not that dark and gloomy, rather a typical rock feeling.

      even back then Freddie had to be careful due to his sexual orientation. When keeping in mind that fact and the pressure a life like that would have generated in a time when people were still not very accepting to those things. Freddie may be one of the few rock stars who did remain quiet, but he may very well be the greatest of them all.

    From the UK 🇬🇧. I grew up with Queen’s music. I can confidently say that the back lash to this song was naught (nothing). The world’s sphincter wasn’t as tight as it is today. Especially in the UK 🇬🇧, We have always used music as a message and outlet. ALWAYS. That’s why as a nation we have produced the best bands on earth. It’s Americans unfortunately have been and some still are closed minded. You’re less tolerant as a nation. You’ve got a lot of catching up to do. But things look like they are going backwards. Just be the best you can be. You seem like a nice fella and one of the few guys (American) that; no offence, listens to Queen the lyrics and the music simultaneously and gets it. The symbiosis. You get Queen. As a black Brit I’ve watched a few reactions and I have found it quite irritating that a lot don’t listen but want to come across as interpreters. Music is art it means a lot of things to a lot of people. What cannot be disputed with Queen is their Genius, versatility and all round magnificence. You’re recognising these qualities in a humble way. That I appreciate. For the crowd that they drew look for Live Aid though not their concert, it’s legendary for Freddie’s crowd control and charisma and Queen live at Wembley. They biggest crowd was at Rio 250,000+. Keep rocking mate.

      America has many different kinds of people, I am 58 years old white woman and totally except people for who they are. The MSM likes to label everybody and alot of their analysis is wrong. I come from a family of 11 kids and my Father was a WW2 veteran and taught us to except people for who they are and to help people if you can. So see your opinion is incorrect.

      Fredricca lind As you believe my opinion is not correct, I have to correct you. Opinions are not facts. Some facts were in my statement and some opinions were included. I’m entitled to my opinions whether you agree or not; that’s yours headache if you choose. What you cannot say is that my opinion is wrong. By saying that you’ve proven my point and I’m a scientist. Proving theories and hypothesis is my job. You’ve made my day. Like I said. A lot of catching up to do. Unfortunately.

    This was what got me into Queen in early 1991 (i was 8) and while i didn't get all the "innuendo" and the true meaning behind it, but the imagery spoke to me as an 8-year old. It was something i haven't seen in pop music till then. The song goes through a lot of moods and the melody is gorgeous. When you grow up and learn more about life and the state of the world the lyrics and message is really clear. As a kid who was raised (moderate) Muslim, i did have the same questions to "God/Allah/etc" so it grabbed more when i started to question all religion and the state of the world at that moment when i ultimately fell out of faith. A religious upbringing doesn't necessarily mean you are a practicing believer, but you are just going through what your parents are telling you what to believe in and kids really want to emulate the grown-ups in the end. That said, this song (still my favorite Queen song and probably my favorite song in the word..ever) really captures humanities struggle for getting answers about the fundamental questions of life. People of faith direct those questions to God, but sometimes fail to look for answers in themselves. I feel that this song directly asks God the questions: " Show yourself - destroy our fears - release you mask" but until we get those answers, we'll keep on trying.
    I don't believe they got death threats back then when this came out. It's funny you brought that up, because it's such a 2018-mindset to assume people got offended at every little thing like criticising or questioning institutes like religion. I have read all books written about them, seen all the interviews and documentaries and there was no mention of backlash with this particular video and song. They had some backlash back in 1984 with the I Want To Break Free video and of course the Sun City concerts, but as far as i know those were the only "blemishes" in their career.
    I like your reactions to the Queen videos, not just for entertainment purposes, but more so for getting different perspective of how another generation perceives the band.
    Cheers!

    When the Innuendo video was released, they took bits and pieces of Freddie in the 80's because they weren't sure whether to expose him on camera which was later decided with "Days of Our Lives" as Freddie insisted to say good bye to loved ones and his fans. The flamenco guitar was done by Steve Howe of "Yes and Asia"... Nobody can touch this music...show me what so called musicians can write REAL lyrics like this!

    BTW: I LOVE your, sincere reactions! Not many people today actually listen, they only hear. Kids have no idea that they are listening to are Hand Played Instrumentals, most without synthesizers. Most early albums would say “No Synthesizers”. Eventually they gave in. And you can’t avoid the lyrics they wrote themselves. They did not have anyone write the music or lyrics. Lastly, I commend you for even pointing out certain things that the young just ignore. I was a lone “Queen” LOVER since 1977. I’m so happy people like you appreciate the work put into each song. I wish I had a friend back in 1977 that felt the same way you feel about Queen. Fat Bottom Girl from Old HB, NYC

    This may be my favorite Queen song. Well, today, You have played such a great range of Queen songs, not just the U.S. hits. (MTV and U.S. radio didn't play Queen in the 80s. See the Days of our Lives Documentary and Brian and Roger talk about why.)

    Holy shit, thanks ... for you regaled us with your deep minded explanation of the meaning of lyrics in a farewell song on last album. God bless you son, you are one hell of a thinker, you invented crossword puzzle didn't you?

    This song is written by Roger and Freddie and you can really appreciate what a musical drummer Roger is, with this song. Unlike some drummers who just bang out the beat and use fancy stick work, Roger tunes his drums so he actually plays notes with them. At times you will even hear the melody coming out from the drums, which is clearly obvious in several other QUEEN songs as well. If you watch him as he is playing you can see him selecting the notes, he is completely in sync with the other band members at all times. Roger is the absolute best musical drummer in rock, in my opinion. Radio as opposed to video really did reach the masses and we heard all the music, not just the most trick videos (which is the storyline behind the song Radio Ga-Ga). The songs continued to be played for years, even decades and we each formed our own images and ideas as to the meanings of the songs. The Spanish guitar on this song has YES guitarist Steve Howe playing along with Brian May. Howe said it was so difficult that he didn't think he could do it and had to take hours figureing it out because the music itself was so involved and tight. This is the first track that QUEEN ever put on an album that included a guitarist who was not part of the band. Queen tried to never really be political because they felt that music should be entertainment not all about the heavy stuff that was going on in the world. This song is all that is wonderful about QUEEN.

    When this song was written times were way better than they are nowadays. At that time the Berlin Wall had fallen just a year and a half before, on November 9th, 1989, and you cannot immagine the emotion that people here in Europe had felt in seeing that terrible barrier being dismantled brick by brick. That had also given people the hope for a new and better era. It looked like we had tried to find a way to reach each other. Unfortunately all this has been lost and today more than ever we watch and judge the others by their race, religion and skin colour. What we feel now is fear and resentment. Maybe we've stopped trying. I hope not....

    • @briancoffey4581
      @briancoffey4581 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrea Logiudice Don't quote me, but I believe you're correct. It makes sense considering the year prior to the release of the "Innuendo" album, Queen had signed with Hollywood Records, a subsidiary of the Walt Disney company. I think one of the considerations in the deal was the access the band would have to the studio's animators who could help create music videos for them since Freddie's health was in decline at the time. In addition, Hollywood got the rights to the band's back catalog, definitely a win-win scenario for both sides.

    It was a wonderful song. People really don’t really look into what songs can mean, people can interpret their own opinions them. I do believe it is exactly what you said. You should check out Scandal. Freddie uses a awkward voice but the song is great.

    Definitely more tolerant times back then. There was more universal understanding for the necessity of freedom of speech, worship etc. Differences were more appreciated even if not agreed with as compared to demand of conformity and public attack currently popular in today's climate.

  • @willamsnyder5696

    Video artistic side note. Freddie = leonardo da Vinci. Brian= m.c. escher. Roger = jackson pollack. John = pablo picasso.
    You'd be surprised, the 80s were a lot more tolerant then now. Dont recall them having much backlash to deal with on this one, I think most people were paying more attention to the composition, than the lyrics.

    rock n roll has carried the message since the 60's and always been fearless in their criticism of our glorious leaders,and long may that continue,but i despair of todays youth.where is the rebellion and passion for causes that WE had?
    take to the streets,write songs about the shit we take from governments,go the festivals in your thousands and spread the word...... but I'm guessing that would mean they'd have to put their fucking phones down for more than 5 minutes.
    we are all doomed,unless we go back to the future with this kind of music.

    This was recorded when Freddy knew he was going to die. I believe he had less than 2 months left. His leg was so ulcerated he could stand for only minutes at a time. Yet witness the energy and commitment to the message they believed as a group. I've been a fan for 47 years and will always be
