McLaren's secretive plan to catch Red Bull in F1 2024

  • Have McLaren finally rattled Red Bull? In a season of unprecedented F1 dominance for Max Verstappen, it’s been rare to see him actually have to defend the lead from another car, or debate with his engineer whether he needs to speed up to get the job done.
    But thanks to the incredible efforts of McLaren and Lando Norris that’s the situation F1’s triple world champion now finds himself in - actually having to think about another competitor rather than just disappearing off into the distance.
    Ever since its mid-season upgrade McLaren has looked like a team transformed - into something that can genuinely beat Aston Martin, Ferrari and Mercedes and be best-of-the-rest. But recently McLaren has started to look like something even more than that.
    Christian Horner feels McLaren is now Red Bull’s “closest competitor” and he’s justified in feeling this way.

    I honestly think the biggest benefit of RB's suspension isn't in the kinematics or platform control alone, but the fact that the pullrod front, helps front axle outwash, and the push rod rear gets the pushrod out of the way of the diffuser, while also moving the suspension components out of the diffuser, since on a pull rod, it would occupy the bottom of the transmission case in the diffuser. McLaren also has a push-rod rear, because they make their own transmission.

It also takes a complete package of chassis, power unit, drivers, and reliability to win Constructor championships and if a team other than Red Bull can challenge for wins at some circuits then Red Bull will need a stronger driver pairing than Checo is currently able to deliver.

They're defending Norris, then when it comes to Piastri which the last 5 races have been low grip and high temps which introduces tyre graining and then the last 3 races he's had damage through no fault of his own. Severe sidepod damage in the USA, severe sidepod and floor damage in Mexico and severe diffuser and rear brake duct finlet damage in Brazil. There's the reason why he has been slower. But to say that Norris has gone to another level in the last couple of races is just DTS fan stuff

    McLaren may be the only team who _can_ challenge Red Bull. The key to Red Bull's speed in the straights, and when DRS is open is the aero benefits that come with the pushrod rear suspension. This design moves the mechanical components UP and away from the Venturi tunnels, allowing the floor, the diffuser and the beam wing to work better. No matter how the other teams copy or massage the side pods, as long as they're using a rear pullrod suspension, they're restricting air flow in a critical area.

    • @vandalsgarage
      @vandalsgarage 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Even if the other teams finally realize that their rear suspension design is restricting air flow, it will take at last a full season of running a new chassis and suspension layout to learn how it works on the various circuits. Red Bull will come out ahead of the rest of the field again next year, with McLaren nipping at their heels.
      Mercedes has admitted again that they do not understand why they cannot compete with Red Bull. It's because they're married to a mediocre chassis.

    • @Redlingstein
      @Redlingstein 6 หลายเดือนก่อน
