Awesome explanation for those who needed it. I’m very grateful that the Lord is patient and long suffering with us. He gave us the master plan in Eden. We failed and we will never get back there until Jesus returns, but we can try to be good stewards of this world that He gave us.
Great follow up to your two earlier videos. You are truly a wealth of habitat improvement knowledge. In addition, your videos all seem to mesh up with the recommended practices in my forest stand improvement plan. I really appreciate these highlights because they help me to better understand the recommendation that the forester made. They've also been a basis for my research on figuring out how to tackle some of these practices on my own.
This method makes a ton of sense to me. So much safer than felling trees. It’ll allow me to work safely on my own. It seems like the standing dead trees are good for wildlife, too.
You shouldn’t need to explain yourself. You are an amazing influence to all sportsman. You are doing an amazing job on teaching others to improve our native habitat. I hope I get to meet you someday.
Good job Grant on showing how your work improved the habitat after a couple months. As they used to say “a photo is worth a thousand words “. Now a video does too.
How do you run a prescribed fire through an area 2 or 3 years later after terminating a bunch of trees standing? Do you have to have a fire break around every dead tree? Thank you you are a wealth of knowledge!
Great video. Y’all have been a wealth of knowledge! In a scenario where there is smaller trees and a very high stem count using the hack and H&S method. Can you cut the trees down once the leaves have fallen off the trees in the summer?
Looks great in just 2 months. I'm curious; do you think these would dry enough to push over with a mini excavator in say, 2 years? I guess the trick is to catch them dry before they move past the firewood stage.
I appreciate all the teaching you do Grant. But I have an off the subject question. Do you still use a hunting app and what is the best one in your opinion. Thanks
Grant, thanks so much for the great instructive video. I’m understanding from the video that girdle/spray is done in late winter before leaf- out, while hack/squirt is a better technique AFTER leaf-out? Is that accurate? Thanks so much in advance! Pat
Pat - Thanks for watching! Hack and squirt is a bit easier and works great when the leaves are fully formed and before they change colors. It is quicker. Girdle and squirt works year round except when the sap is at maximum flow.
Grant, a video or short of yours popped up a week or so ago that showed you girdling and squirting some trees. It looked like you had some sort of foaming agent in the mixture, which I assume helps hold the herbicide in place. What was that? Thanks
I understand why you do the girdling method. What I'd like to know is how soon after would it be ok for me to go ahead and cut the tree down and use it to make fishing lures and other wood products and still derive the benefits of girdling?
If you are comfortable running a chainsaw, you could cut the tree down anytime and just spray the outer edges on the top of the stump to terminate it. I believe Grant is suggesting doing it this way when you have lots of timber you want to treat in an efficient way to improve the habitat.
Love your content! I was wondering, I burn wood for heat, would there be a danger of coming back a year or 2 later and turning this into firewood? Would the herbicide let of potentially dangerous fumes?
I'm not concerned about the herbicide but I wouldn't fell dead trees. For firewood, I recommend felling the trees and then treating the stumps with herbicide.
Thank you for your continued teaching and inspiration I need in my habitat project and for the big picture I inspiration that all we do we do for God and that His creation pleased Him. That said I’d like to know where you get your hats from. I need the protection from the sun in my fields.
Hey Grant! I know that theres a debate that goes around between hack and squirt and hinge cutting, curious what your thoughts are on combining the two methods? Hinge cut a tree, then spray the cut. So you get immediate cover and bedding but it wont shoot back with the thick unusable habitat.
Will holly trees sprout back up at stump? Have hardwoods with understory took over by holly trees? Also can hack an squirt work on them year round seeing they stay green year round
The only concern I would have would be root sharing of the smaller oak trees that you're thinning with the larger oak trees you are keeping. But there's always going to be a risk with anything.
I'm sure you won't reply back and I'm impressed with the deer u grow on your land. I think u should drop the trees rather then the the way your doing it. That method works here but we get widow makes all over. I seen u grow bring big bucks on your land but y not drop the trees instead of the hack and squit? I've seen the method here and its nice because the branches drop then the tree. If I was going to do that I'd just drop the trees. I get the burning. I did some of my woods last year and the morals hunting was great. I'm confused y hack and squirt is better then dropping the trees

Thanks for the encouraging words!
Nailed the landing on this one!
Love this video series. Ive been implementing this in my woods .it work's.
Amen brother! Great video

Great video
Wealth of knowledge.
Appreciate your comments about addressing detractors. Keep up the good and Godly work! God Bless!
Thanks for the support!
Great Video Grant!! Keep em coming!!!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep your videos coming please.❤
Great episode of improvement methods.👍👍👍
Great information
Awesome video Grant
In our area of middle Tennessee, girdling hickory makes for standing cured hickory for smoking deer and hog.
Hickories almost always sprout unless the girdle is treated with herbicide.
Grant can we cut the trees down for firewood and spray stumps?
Yes
Sure!
Use the techniques that work best ..grant for the national land manager!
Amen
How do you run a prescribed fire through an area 2 or 3 years later after terminating a bunch of trees standing? Do you have to have a fire break around every dead tree? Thank you you are a wealth of knowledge!
Very few will actually catch fire. However, even with the few that do, as long as they aren't near a fire break, who cares?
We do remove fuel from bases of the dead trees - at least for the first 100' from the fire break into the unit.
Is there no fear of burning the area after this since the dead trees may stovepipe?
Great video. Y’all have been a wealth of knowledge! In a scenario where there is smaller trees and a very high stem count using the hack and H&S method. Can you cut the trees down once the leaves have fallen off the trees in the summer?
If the trees have been treated with a herbicide, they can be felled. Just felling without using a herbicide will result in a bunch of stump sprouts!
Thanks!
I had no idea you went to Clemson. Dr Guynn was my graduate teacher as well.
Good to hear you say God instead of the Creator .that's awesome
Great video as always. Can you girdle and use the herbicide in the spring and summer or is it best when the leaves are off?
David - you can girdle or use the hack and squirt during the summer!
Looks great in just 2 months. I'm curious; do you think these would dry enough to push over with a mini excavator in say, 2 years? I guess the trick is to catch them dry before they move past the firewood stage.
Likely - but will vary by tree size, weather, etc.
I appreciate all the teaching you do Grant. But I have an off the subject question. Do you still use a hunting app and what is the best one in your opinion. Thanks
Gary - for mapping I use onX and Huntstand, pending on where I'm working.
Thanks

@@GrowingDeerTV Thank you for the information - it's added to my educational book for working on our property:)!!
👍
What herbicide are we using?
Grant, a video or short of yours popped up a week or so ago that showed you girdling and squirting some trees. It looked like you had some sort of foaming agent in the mixture, which I assume helps hold the herbicide in place. What was that? Thanks
Adan - We don't use a foaming agent - just a mix of herbicides and blue dye.
I understand why you do the girdling method. What I'd like to know is how soon after would it be ok for me to go ahead and cut the tree down and use it to make fishing lures and other wood products and still derive the benefits of girdling?

Kevin - If you wish to use the wood, it's better for you to fell the tree and treat the stump within 5 minutes of making the cut.
Love your content! I was wondering, I burn wood for heat, would there be a danger of coming back a year or 2 later and turning this into firewood? Would the herbicide let of potentially dangerous fumes?

@@GrowingDeerTV I appreciate your advice. Thanks

David - Thanks for the encouraging words! I get the wide-brimmed hats from Sun Grubbies and Coolibar.
I am purchasing a parcel of land not far from your "proving grounds" what herbicide did you use?
Glyphosate or tordon works
I use a mix of 50% Garlon 3A, 40% water, and 10% Arsenal AC. I use the generics of these and purchase them on line.
Hey Grant! I know that theres a debate that goes around between hack and squirt and hinge cutting, curious what your thoughts are on combining the two methods? Hinge cut a tree, then spray the cut. So you get immediate cover and bedding but it wont shoot back with the thick unusable habitat.
I strongly prefer grass and forbs (cover and food) to hinge cutting. Therefore I prefer to terminate the tree standing.
What type of herbicide?
Will holly trees sprout back up at stump? Have hardwoods with understory took over by holly trees? Also can hack an squirt work on them year round seeing they stay green year round
David - Holly trees will sprout and hack and squirt works best during the summer. - more samp movement.
I’m sure I’ve asked you before, but what herbicide or combination do you use?
Tommy - 50% Garlon 3A, 40% water, and 10% Arsenal AC.
What herbicide do you use to terminate a tree with girdling?
50% Garlon 3A, 40% water, and 10% Arsenal AC.
I’m in clemson!! Did you do your phd here??
I did!
Can you send me some generic names for the herbicides?
Jerry - There are several. I simply search the web for the a generic of the herbicide brand I'm shopping for.
Can you girdle a pine tree?
Yes - but pines tend to take much longer to die when they are girdled than hardwoods.
The only concern I would have would be root sharing of the smaller oak trees that you're thinning with the larger oak trees you are keeping. But there's always going to be a risk with anything.
Really only a risk if you use soil active herbicide.
Oaks rarely root graft. Sweetgums and Aspens do root graft.
💪👊👍
What about burning in that unit now? Are you not gonna get tons of "chimneying" from all of the dead trees catching on fire?
Some of them will catch fire - but before we burn we remove the fuel from the base of the dead trees.
Why not just cut down?
I'm sure you won't reply back and I'm impressed with the deer u grow on your land. I think u should drop the trees rather then the the way your doing it. Dropping trees makes a mess and shades the soil much more than standing dead trees.
So you have a forest of dead trees?
Ehh
Seems lazy
Like killing game and leaving it
Cut it up and use it for something
