After graduating I lost approximately 95% of the friends I had in school. Some of them went away, some of them are still in school, some of them I realized weren’t even really friends to begin with. We just couldn’t relate to each other anymore. Trying to make new friends after school is rough, so I totally get where your coming from here.

I, personally, would move near your uni friends. Moving out is a big step, so why not make it a little bit easier? Also, make the best of the time when you can be as close to your friends as possible. Later on, you will probably live in different places, so enjoy it now. I also don‘t perceive staying close to your Uni friends as „clinging on to uni life“ :)
Basically, what I want so say: If you feel like you really need/want a „fresh start“ , you should move somewhere else... but if living near your friends would make you happy (for now) then don‘t move somewhere else just because you feel like that‘s the thing you are supposed to do. You can always make the fresh start and find work friends in the years to come :)

we often feel like we’ve got to get on with the next big thing, but that isn’t necessarily the case. you’re going to be working for many years, you’ll have a thousand opportunities to make work friends. friends from uni can be really special. moving close to them while you guys are still close by isn’t clinging to university, in my view.
i guess what i’m saying is, don’t feel like you have to rush to the next thing. that would be a decision made based on anxiety and even fear (of being “behind schedule”, of missing out...). if moving close to your uni friends is what you actually want to do now, don’t hold back - and viceversa!

I moved to London for my first job after Cambridge and that’s over 20yrs ago. You and your uni friends will make time for each other. I keep in touch and visit my uni friends and they are all over the world - friendship. New experiences on the other hand will help you grow in areas beyond friendship. Good luck Paige! Love your enthusiasm. Cheers

I think I would move near to your uni friends, because you don't know when you'll have this opportunity again when y'all start the "grown up work life" spread over the whole country! Sometimes it's good to stay in your "comfort zone" and make small steps, because moving out itself is a big step! Plus you've got the rest of your work life to connect with your colleagues, and it'll be easier when you're at the office :)

    • @seleniums101
      @seleniums101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I agree. Unfortunately it's a lot harder to make friends as an adult. Especially as people start having kids and there is a mismatch in lifestyle. I've been struggling since graduation so my personal opinion is that you should have fun while you still can with your uni friends. Those will be great memories

  • @acheleia

I love the little mention of the doppelgänger thing, my doppelgänger is hilariously enough my best friend! People think we’re twins all the time but we’re not related or the same age at all.
As for college friends, your college friends will always be your friends. Obviously make an effort with work colleagues but there’s nothing wrong with keeping your friends from college in your life! I graduated from undergrad in 2012, and still talk to a lot of people from there including one of my roommates who comes to visit us regularly. It’s okay to not know what to do after uni, there’s a big shift in life for everyone. ❤️

You could always rent somewhere for 6 months whilst you are waiting for your office plans to be confirmed.
That way you’re not tied into something so permanently. And then you can move once the office is open.
Maybe live in Cambridge. At the end of the day, I really understand you wanting to move near your uni friends. You’ve spent so much time with them so you want to allow the friendship to flourish.
All the best with the situation.
Maybe the trip to Cornwall will help to clarify things.

May I suggest you move into a cube-shaped form with offshoots containing at least one bedroom, bathroom and a kitchen. It should also contain windows, ceiling. floors and a front door that allows you entrance to your cube form. The windows should have glass therefore you can look and an unspecified amount of the solar energy to penetrate and brighten up your cube form. The final consideration for the cube is walls. These walls must meet to form corners.

I think you can still prioritise your uni friends, even though you're also very likely to make new friends as well. But just because you made friends with them in uni, it doesn't make their friendships any less real or significant for the rest of your life. It's always good to live near friends and a support system. I have moved to a new city to be near my best friend from uni and I don't regret it. I have work friends now too, who are wonderful, but I made them without having to move closer to these potential friends before I knew them. You're not "clinging" to anything. Your friends are your friends, and if they are special to you, do what you can to keep them.

What age group are the people you work with ? If they're married with kids , the chances are they won't socialise a lot out side of work , or have a social circle of their own peer group , with Uni friends you will always have a shared history , as for moving out , it's overrated , at the moment you get fed , have laundry done , and it's cheap , it's the life of Riley ! don't rush just for the sake of moving out .

For what it's worth, sometimes it's good to keep work and home separate. Not always, but sometimes you need to get RIGHT away from work, and just keep colleagues as once-a-week pub people. Living with strangers can work really well, and you get to meet new people through them, but it can also go horribly wrong - you need to trust your instincts when you go to look at places. If things are good with your uni friends and there's an opportunity to live WITH them, then go for it. If you're intending to live alone NEAR them, it might not be the best option. I had a good bond with uni friends and lived with them straight after graduation, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. A great option for you in post-covid times is to stay at home and save money for a deposit to buy your own flat in London, and you can rent one or more rooms out so you're not living alone, and will pay the mortgage off quicker. You might feel (wrongly) that you're not advancing by living at home, but it will go quickly, and you'll be surprised how quickly you can save £50,000.

When I get eyestrain headaches, I have found a little eye exercise that gets rid of the pain. You keep your head still and move you eyes from left to right a few times. Repeat that but with up-down movements and finally diagonal movements. No idea if it's backed by science but I found it helpful.

I'm not sure how far your job is from your friends but i would move closer to work and make effort to meet up with your friends. Mostly because you will eventually have a commute plus exams which should be priority. As someone who did what you are doing but the accountancy version it makes it so much easier having a shorter commute. I could stay at work to revise or know that I wouldnt waste time driving home to the point i was too exhausted to study. You will socialise with people from work eventually. Just my advice xx

It's true, it's more difficult to make friends after university. I made friends outside of work, e.g. I go to Karate training (used to, at the moment online) and we also had socializing events there. I also made friends at meetups (e.g. meeting where people speak Japanese). You get the idea. For you maybe at a band where you play the saxophone?

I would choose to move to your friends, if that isn't too difficult with your job. Making friends from your job is hard, as people will switch jobs all the time and then often they're gone and make new contacts at their new jobs. I think friends from uni will for the largest part stay your friends. At least that's what happened in my case.

  • @Missmary852

deep down you know what you want and what kind of person you are Paige! I mean think about when you had to make a choice bewteen a masters in astrophysics(job scarcity) and a job(stability). Were the reasons aligned to your core values? How will you feel about the decision you make now in 5 years? Personally,i would say since you are still young, you can afford to go with your insticts so if those friends are really special to you, there is nothing wrong with prioritizing your social life.
EDIT:my point is don't listen to anyone or any comment,do what seems right for you, better do it and regret it than regret not doing it (also, you can have both work and uni friends, haha. i have different friend groups from uni, theatre classes, volunteering and even hs. it's cool,of course you are not goinna get super close with everyone but hanging out and socializing is still awesome)

People from work are not your friends and they shouldnt be your friends. Separate your personal life from worklife. It is the healthiest thing to do.
