- Ahead of England's Euro 2020 qualifier against Czech Republic, let's take a look at the Three Lions' World Cup squad from 2006, and see where they are now... including the likes of Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

I’ve always wondered if it was the FA that put Eriksson up to picking Walcott over all the potential strikers we could’ve had at the time. I remember whenever he was asked about it in interviews he was dodging the question and giving blanket statements like crazy.
Jenas is a meme nowadays but to be fair he was a decent utility midfielder to have circa 2006.
@@strykah92 He didn't get a minute of playing time. My feeling was we should have taken an extra striker. Owen had just recovered from injury in March 06 and then was injured again against Sweden.
Nik Turk that’s true, although if we beat Portugal we most likely would’ve had to play him with Beckham injured and Hargreaves suspended. Just saying taking Walcott was still the bigger blunder first and foremost.

For the goalkeeping position, my pick would be Sergio Romero. Always an undisputed starter for Argentina when not injured, but mostly a sub in his club career, particularly for both Monaco and Manchester United.

I heard this story from a good source, about Walcott. In the Quarter Final against Portugal, we still had two subs to come on. Down to 10-men, Beckham injured, Sven was considering his options! Lennon was already on for Becks, it was an absolute sweltering day in Gelsenkirchen and everyone on both sides, seemed to be tiring (except Hargreaves, who just kept on going) The backroom staff urged Sven to put Theo on. The thought being that his pace would be too much for the, tbh, quite a lot older and tiring Portuguese defenders. Instead he brought on Phil Neville, to shore up Midfield and Jamie Carragher, to take a penalty.
When asked years later if this was true, Sven was quoted as saying "Imagine if he had scored the winner, it was my duty to protect him from the media scrutiny he was not ready for"
Personally I would rather have gone out having a go than, just playing for the penalties! In my opinion, I think he would of terrorised the Portuguese, defenders and he would have run them ragged, I saw him playing for Southampton, not long before and he was all over Leeds United's "aged" defence. He scored a full length of-the field, goal that day.
Says a lot about Sven that does, play it safe rather than get to a WC semi-final. Sometimes common-sense is nonsense!

Rooney's potential was never realised. Look at his age and where he's playing. There's an argument that he was on a steady downward spiral from 2012 onwards. Also, have a look at the other players from his generation are, who they're playing for and what they've achieved.
Top scorer of England and Man United, being either is a pretty good feat, he did both. he won loads of trophies, he has achieved all there is other than WC glory, but that was a failure of the entire England squad. This guy has been playing his ass off since 16, He did good.

Yea Cafu and Zanetti are the only Full Backs better than him and technically Wing Backs so yea he is the best Right back of all time but not attacking at all

If you want to include any right back with an attackable ability as "played in a different position" then you're not left with much. You can't be a world class full back and be mediocre in attack. In no order career can you be average at 50 percent of your job and be considered one of the best in the world. Why do you think he was never once in team of the year? He was only in the premiership team of the year twice after 2000 despite winning it every year. He was great for his longevity but in a one off match id take Cafu, Thuaram, Zanetti, Zambrotta, Dani Alves, Maicon and even a few more over him.
