I'm binge watching your travels by train and it's become more appealing. I have no desire to get on a plane with the way some behave badly. You've opened my eyes.
I am so enjoying ALL of your videos! My sweet husband and I are getting ready to take a HUGE Amtrak adventure in a few months. 🎉💕 we are going from LAX to New Orleans then transferring from there to DC, then onto a 3rd train to Chicago, and then our 4train to Seattle, and train #5 to Sac…and then heading back home on train #6. Whew! Your videos have empowered these seniors to do this and do it well. Packing tips, meal tips, do’s and don’ts and so much more, Thank you! 😘🥰💕
This is a great way to start my morning off I am new to the channel and I love it so much and it's funny how I discovered it I decided to try Amtrak and then I go on TH-cam and discovered your videos.. It was meant to be...keep up the great videos...u guys are awesome!
I have been able to ride Amtrak twice since the pandemic. I went to New Bern North Carolina in March and I went to Alexandria Virginia in May. I enjoyed the ride both times seeing how the scenery change from City to City.
I rode both the Capitol Limited and the Lakeshore Limited this past June. Both great routes with beautiful scenery. Loved following you. Saw so many great places I visited too.
I love this idea, with a circle vacation aboard Amtrak. I hadn't thought about the "smaller circle" on the east coast, but that's a great idea too. I appreciate that you're a Mets fan (thankfully not a Yankees fan since I love my Red Sox!!). And even thinking going to Boston on Acela and then when you mentioned a train from Boston to Chicago and Chicago back to DC that makes alot of sense. If I planned it right I could see baseball games in several cities!! Just what my husband, the nonsports fan would love, haha!! But checking out that aviation museum because he'd love that one!!! Thanks for all the great tips.
As a native of the Chicagoland area, when it comes to deep dish it's a tie between Girodano's and Lou Malnati's. Both are excellent, but go with Girodano's for stuffed deep dish and Lou's for more traditional deep dish.
This is random, but at 30:00 you can hear a woman talking about the Seabees. They are the construction side of the Navy and my husband is one, actually. I have great pride in his service and I love when the Seabees are celebrated. They are resourceful and flexible. 😁👍🏻👏🏻
I think I'm going to book a trip soon. I think my only close option is driving to Denver and leaving my car in a park and ride lot and catch whatever train is going west and stay in California a few nights and head back home. Sounds like a plan lol. Looking forward to the mountain views from a train. Definitely getting a roomette 👍 thx for all the info and great vids. Amtrak should sponsor you guys.one the most detailed Amtrak channels. 💯👍
I did a couple of trips from Syracuse to Woodbridge VA and enjoyed the trip even though it took all day. The trip was so relaxed. I have rode the Autotrain both north and south and only once was the train delayed on a northbound trip (6hrs). Enjoyed the trips anyway. It beats flying.
Thank you for showing us around the city's some. We are getting on the Zephyr in Chicago in June 2022 because we love yalls videos. Can't wait to try all the foods in Chicago and San Francisco.
It would be awesome to see the baseball park if you ever go again. Also to see the meal at the Seinfeld restaurant would be cool. Thank another great video. I also remember seeing some of this video on another one of yours.

The LSL is a nice trip but if you're looking for nice views north of Albany this time of year you're out of luck as it gets dark as you approach Albany and you won't see the sun again till sometime after Cleveland, probably Sandusky. Nice video as always
Greetings from New York. This trip sounds like a great idea. The only thing is I will make the trip bigger. Here's how. I have a dream vacation where I travel all over the United States only Using Amtrak. Since I live on Long Island, I will start in New York City. There are two ways I want to take this trip. Option 1: 1. Avelia Liberty to Washington, DC (the old Acela will probably be out of service before I take this trip) 2. Crescent to New Orleans, LA 3. City of New Orleans to Chicago, IL 4. Texas Eagle to Los Angeles, CA 5. Coast Starlight to Portland, OR or Seattle, WA 6. Empire Builder to Chicago, IL 7. Lake Shore Limited to Boston, MA 8. Northeast Regional to New York City, NY Option 2: 1. Avelia Liberty to Washington, DC (the old Acela will probably be out of service before I take this trip) 2. Crescent to New Orleans, LA 3. Sunset Limited to San Antonio, TX 4. Texas Eagle to Chicago, IL 5. Southwest Chief to Los Angeles, CA 6. Coast Starlight to Portland, OR or Seattle, WA 7. Empire Builder to Chicago, IL 8. Lake Shore Limited to Boston, MA 9. Northeast Regional to New York City, NY I won't be taking this trip anytime soon, but hopefully it happens one day. In case I ever do, which option should I choose, how should I plan, and are there any other tips? Thank you in advance, and I enjoy your videos.
They both look great, my advice would be to build a day in between cities to allow for a late train or 2, that way you don't get behind schedule. Sounds amazing! I might consider on trip one taking the Zephyr to Emeryville and then the Coast Starlight to LA, but then you would have to ride it back up to Seattle. There isn't a perfect way to work the Zephyr in while still doing the entire Coast Starlight , which is too bad.
Im so glad i found you two ...i have a question im planning a trip to new york from my home town new orleans just book yesterday 1st trip how do we get from new york station to the hotel
I recently did the train to NY and I found a hotel that was like 1 mile or so from the train and I walked! But there are lots of ways to get around : bikes, taxis, subway etc; map out your hotel from the train and see how far it is
Like Kourtney we've walked once, but this time we booked the Marriott, which is directly next to the station, it wasn't that much for NYC, so just book that if you can
Hey guys I just wanted to let you know, I just booked the California Zepyer from Denver to San Francisco. We booked 2 separate roomettes and can't wait to go in the end of April 2022. Thanks for all the videos and that's what really made me decide to go on it.
I took the Lake Shore from Chicago to NYC. Longest 25 hours ever lol. But it was still pretty cool going through states I've never been through. And speaking of which, I am still amazed how short of a gap it is between NYC and DC. I live here in KC, and it takes 3 1/2 to 4 hours just to get across my state. And over on the East Coast, you can go from NYC, through Philly, through Baltimore and to DC all within 4 1/2 hours, whether by car or train. I keep thinking it's a longer journey than that, but it's really not. Really crazy!
Just watched this. I use to work at the university in St. George Utah. One of their buildings is called the Udvar Hazy(pronounced Hawzy actually). The family of the same name as the airplane exhibit you visited.
Don't forget that at major stations Red Cap service is available, especially in Chicago. I am on a cane and they have been wonderful in getting you right to the car you're riding in. Available in CHI from train side to lounge and lounge to your train, in my case Southwest Chief. Also available in Los Angeles too.
Fun fact: the building you panned to from the top of the Vessel is The Spire and Turner construction co is a co partner in the venture. It is going to be a show stopper!
Of all the restaurants Rob mentioned in Chicago are any of the walking distance from union Station? If so how far? Also any suggestions of where to eat inside union Station in DC. Traveling solo trying to be cautious
There are plenty in Union Station like Chick-Fil-A and other things like that. It is probably a 15-20 minute walk to some of the others outside the station.
I like Lou Malnati's in Chicago, a sausage pie. In NYC. Sebretts are the best dogs in Chicago there's great German restaurant on Adams, the Berghoff I believe.
I am going from New York to Kansas city next June. Taking the Capitol Limited via DC there and Lake Shore back. I was able to get the family bedroom cheaper than a roomette.
I'm doing a similar trip this summer -- with Chicago --> Boston --> New York --> D.C. --> Chicago, and I’m very much looking forward to it. I'm not a fan of Italian beef, but if I'm looking for Chicago-style pizza, I do like Giordano's.
Question, when you do these multi-city stops is it all one ticket or do you have to keep getting another ticket each time because I would like to try that. I'd appreciate if you can explain how it works.
I enjoyed you guys video. I was bored and raised in New York City. Iver been to the highlights or the vessel. the vessel is definitely too high if you have to walk up all the steps. Since the pandemic crime has been over the charts, so I basically stay home and if I have to go to the city, I use a private car. I don't take the Subway because it's dangerous even in broad daylight. It looks like it looks like you guys had a great time.
p.s. Know why The Vessel has been closed to tourists for a couple of years? Multiple instances of people committing suicide by leaping to their deaths from it. To this day, it's not open. Robert in NYC.
Hey guys! Still enjoying the videos and next time you in Chi Twn try Luminati's pizza downtown it's very delicious and they have other things on the menu to try as well. Love you guys
Beginners traveling as I am getting tired of all the driving. Just not sure where to begin would love to go Niagara falls but we live south of FortWorth Dallas. Long haul on a train for first time any advice really worried about the food.
You have a few options. One Option is you can take the Sunset Limited to New Orleans. Then you can take the Crescent to New York. Then take the Maple Leaf into Canada but you need to fill out paperwork 72 hours before boarding the train. The 2nd option is take the Texas Eagle to Chicago. Then take the Cardinal to New York or the LakeShore Limited to New York and then take Maple leaf to Niagra Falls
I love your channel and I’m so glad you don’t make me listen to music while you are not talking! I’d much rather hear the sounds of the area! Good job! Also I know the videos are delayed but it would be so nice if you would tell us when a video was taped and the day of the week too
Great video Moynihan Train Hall Is amazing! The Metropolitan Lounge is just top notch, as you guys know! Just love NYC…always something new to experience!
When you arrived in Chicago did you walk to your hotel? Because I live on the East Coast (NC) I have traveled to NYC plenty of times by train & love it. I always wondered if I take the train up to Chicago would I have to get a taxi to hotel & would I have to fly back to NC. I like this round about train travel from NYC-CHI-DC. That way from DC I can easily get back to NC. Great video
We rode the Lakeshore limited from NYC to Chicago recently. We were the last to know the departure track by watching the posted Amtrak boarding information. Last in line. As a result, we were unable to find seats together in coach. Appears to be another means to determine the departure track other than watching the posted boarding information.
Hello! Big fan of your channel. I have learned a lot about what to expect when my wife and I start to travel by Amtrak. We have two small dogs, a chihuahua and a pug/chihuahua mix that we want to travel with. Is there anyway you could do a video of what to expect while traveling with pets on Amtrak? Please and ty!
I can't believe I'll be taking the Lakeshore Limited to Chicago from Boston this Holiday Break. I know the Boston Segment of the Train (449) will have Lunch, as they'll usually leave South Station at 12:50pm. But what about Dinner that night and Breakfast the next morning?
I have a question, anyone feel free to answer of course, if you’re taking the train from Chicago, IL to Seattle, WA (the route known as the Empire Builder) without switching trains, is that considered one(1) segment or two(2) segments? Any help is appreciated!
From Amtrak - “A travel segment is anytime a rider gets on then off of the train.” So, as long as you don’t get off of the train at Spokane, you would use one segment to go from CHI to SEA.
The LSL and Capitol Limited are among the least likely to receive a return of traditional dining, as they had flexible dining starting from a couple of years before the pandemic. The LSL had, even before that, a lighter form of traditional dining.
Great Summer video! Were you 2 in a Transitional Sleeper Car? I've never seen a community bathroom/shower combo on the upper or lower levels on Amtrak's Superliner sleepers.
I took this train, the Lake Shore Limited. It was one of the new cars, with no toilet in the compartment. MY DOOR LATCH DID NOT WORK. I had to choose between having my own air space versus being able to get out of the Roomette without the conductor pressing on the door. The conductor blithely told me, just close the curtain for privacy. Not acceptable. Otherwise I love this train and had no problems on the return trip - in the older cars, with the ensuite toilet and a fool proof door latch.
Car 4912 Roomette 5 And when I asked how I could tell if my reservation was on the "good side" (to see the Hudson River views) the station agent confessed that he didn't know either, "it depends on how they hook the cars up that day."
Thanks for sharing your experiences, you are correct, your door should have shut. You can call customer service and see if they'll do anything about it afterward
I enjoyed your video. Thank you! I wanted to point out the bringing bikes on Amtrak gives you a great way to get around the city when you arrive. No need to rent a car or the hassle and expense of parking. My son and I have travelled this way numerous times. The northeast routes are a little less bike friendly than other routes. Regular bicycles are not allowed on Acela at all. We use folding bikes which are allowed on all Amtrak trains at all times and do not require an extra fee or reservation: they are counted as regular baggage. Here is a video we made which shows how to take folding bikes on Amtrak: th-cam.com/video/TqwDgv-uyw8/w-d-xo.html
I was just at an Amtrak station window, today, trying to get info on pricing. However, the room prices have certainly jumped up hundreds compared to a few weeks ago.
I don't think I would want a toilet in the same cabin in the open near to where I sleep or sit and especially with someone else in the same space no matter if it's your wife or husband sorry I like my privacy don't wanna see, hear or smell somebody's bodily functions lol just my thoughts 🤔🚽😵
I'm binge watching your travels by train and it's become more appealing. I have no desire to get on a plane with the way some behave badly. You've opened my eyes.
Thanks! You should go for it!
You two are so cute! I love your low key yet adventurous approach. So informative! I’m inspired to look into train travel! Keep it up!
Thanks so much!

Yes, filmed during the summer 2021, one crazy summer!

In New York, there r many public buses & subway train 🚂 $. If u want more convenience, more $$ take Uber🚕🚌, taxi.. easy...

Allie is a big Giordano's fan too!
I want to catch the train from Detroit to NYC any suggestions I never booked train ticket what would be the best way to do that?
You will have to go from Detroit to Chicago and then from Chicago to New York City
@@GroundedLifeTravel thank you
You can do all (NYC, DC, Chicago) by riding the Amtrak Cardinal (29 hrs). It's really beautiful.
Next time you’re in Chicago, there’s a place called Luke’s, a couple doors down from the Giordano’s you visited. They have great food as well
We ended up going there, Luke's Beef? We loved it!
Question, when you do these multi-city stops is it all one ticket or do you have to keep getting another ticket each time because I would like to try that. I'd appreciate if you can explain how it works.
You need a new ticket each time. So we just book separate rides, and stay in a hotel for a few nights in each city.

Hi I am taking my son on a train trip. We live in Ft. lauderdale. Where do you suggest for a 5 day trip. Train hotel then the train back. Not Orlando.
We would say up to Washington D.C. or New York City, those are the easiest from Florida

Hello.I enjoy your channel, How did you all first start your Amtrak travel vacations?
Our first trip was from Atlanta to New Orleans on the Crescent in coach.
We rode the Lakeshore limited from NYC to Chicago recently. We were the last to know the departure track by watching the posted Amtrak boarding information. Last in line. As a result, we were unable to find seats together in coach. Appears to be another means to determine the departure track other than watching the posted boarding information.
I ❤ NY
We do too!
I am curious where are you guys from?
Atlanta, GA
When did you film this? Its much chillier now. 😀
We took the trip in the summer of 2021, it took us a bit to put the videos together
How far away is the Bean from the train station?
I love giordano’s
Allie is a big fan too!
You should take a ride on Brightline Venture coaches some day.
Hi, what are you and Robs primary occupations?
Rob is a photographer
Good idea, but we don't have a pet, but we have a blog about it on our website
@@GroundedLifeTravel Awww dang! I will go check your blog out, thanks for letting me know 🙂!
You should get them too
I have a question, anyone feel free to answer of course, if you’re taking the train from Chicago, IL to Seattle, WA (the route known as the Empire Builder) without switching trains, is that considered one(1) segment or two(2) segments? Any help is appreciated!
From Amtrak - “A travel segment is anytime a rider gets on then off of the train.” So, as long as you don’t get off of the train at Spokane, you would use one segment to go from CHI to SEA.
That is just one segment, one of the longest ones you can do
The Oven Grinder in Wrigleyville
Thanks for the suggestion, next time!
I have a Question. Lol. I am wondering on the Flexible Dining is it Braised Beef or Braised Beet? Lol. I can never tell.
Braised Beef, and it is pretty good!
Lou Malnati’s is the best pizza
People keep saying that! We need to try it next time
@@GroundedLifeTravel everything is amazing there, and the Italian Beef top notch!
The LSL and Capitol Limited are among the least likely to receive a return of traditional dining, as they had flexible dining starting from a couple of years before the pandemic. The LSL had, even before that, a lighter form of traditional dining.
Thanks for sharing your info!
How was the Mets game?
Great Summer video! Were you 2 in a Transitional Sleeper Car? I've never seen a community bathroom/shower combo on the upper or lower levels on Amtrak's Superliner sleepers.
Yes we are, we asked why it was like that, our first time
Lou Malnati's the best
27:36 That place made me sick as a kid, no idea why! 😂
When one person has to use "the facilities" does the other person just leave? I assume so.
U wait your turn,
I make them put their hands over their eyes and sing she'll be comin round the mountain
I'd guess everyone does it differently
Note that the roomette they were in is the older style - the newer ones don't have the commode but they do have more power outlets.
Yes, sadly there is really no way to know beforehand, we wish it was different
Thanks for sharing your experiences, you are correct, your door should have shut. You can call customer service and see if they'll do anything about it afterward
portillos for beef in chicago
It's very good!
It's a SHAME, I live in NYC, and NEVER seen some of the sites you'll went to
Oh you need to go!
They go up as the train fills, so, book as early as possible when you know your dates.
Talk about losing a husband by going into the bathroom in that roomette
I can't believe you bought a hot dog from a street vendor!. They don't change that water daily and you don't want to see how where the carts are sold!
Relax,. How do dozens of people who eat these,. Live another day?! 💩
You two are so cute! I love your low key yet adventurous approach. So informative! I’m inspired to look into train travel! Keep it up!
