I consider myself quite close minded when it comes to musical tastes. I generally stick to the popular rock and Hip Hop music I grew up on. I'm no longer satisfied with the same old tunes, I know there is more out there just beyond my fingertips. Join me on my journey as I look to broaden my mind through the world of music. No genre is off limits. My goal. To discover artists and songs both iconic and obscure to learn, laugh along and adore at what talented artists have created.

"Like Spinning Plates" by Radiohead is an interesting song, and it is SO DIFFERENT in the live version (from "I Might Be Wrong") than the version on the album "Amnesiac." It would be incredibly cool if you would contrast them. Almost like two TOTALLY different songs, that is how different they are.
P-ear-t
Alex Lifeson talking about this song & Commercialization of radio: “That song was really a statement of where radio was going, where it had been. Growing up in the early 70s, FM radio was such a free forum for music; you’d have DJs who would play stuff for an hour. They’d just talk about the songs; there were no commercials or anything. "So free-form, really a platform for expanding music at the time. And then it was moving more towards a format, and away from that freedom, becoming more regulated, more about selling airtime. It just speaks about that, really.” Lifeson also points out where the song’s title came from: “I think that was a common motto for radio stations at the time. Like, you’d hear [speaks in a DJ voice] ‘The Edge, 102!’ There was a station here in Toronto, CFNY, that used "The Spirit of Radio" as their call motto. But it wasn’t really specifically about them - it was more about the idea.” Also included in the song is a tip of the cap to Simon And Garfunkel’s 60s classic The Sound Of Silence: 'The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls/And whispered in the sounds of silence’ became ‘The words of the profits (not prophets) are written on the studio wall, concert hall/Echoes with the sounds of salesmen.’ Just a play on words - Neil being a little clever,” Lifeson says. By Greg Prato (Classic Rock Magazine) published 29 June 2021
Not freestyle. The jazz sound are triggers on this drum kit.
Your're English and don't know the Moody Blues? Shame on you! The strings you heard was the Mellotron not a violin.

@@MusicForTheSoulReactions very well then, I was born in Swindon. I suggest listening to the album version of Nights in White Satin along with Late Lament. I hope you dig further into their catalog. Cheers mate!
It’s not as much about Niel’s speed and timing as it is about his creativity. Look at how Niel brought the “drum solo” to the audience. With the pounding bass drum at the beginning to the melodic xylophone to wowing you with his double bass and high-hat work to the horns he triggered at the end. His creativity in the songs he plays with Rush is like no other I have ever heard or will hear again. Whether he's the GOAT of drumming or not, that’s all subjective. I’m ok if he’s not considered “the best”. I just know what his drumming does to my sole. When Niel is playing with the band, the seamlessly smooth transition to the next phrase of the song is largely (but not solely) Niel. RIP.

Working man was the song that gave Rush the breakthrough into the USA market in 74 thanks to a “Cleveland” radio station That’s why it was the final song infront of the Cleveland audience
@@byronness7385 ahhhh that totally makes sense and has some life poetry to it, thanks for the comment
YES!!
Neil did not feel this was onevof his best performances as he was dealing with having the flu at the time. All that you see here is composed. I read in one of his books that he did at times leave a small part of his solo open for some improvisation pieces. There is a drumming piece that he mastered where each limb is playing something different! I am enjoying your Rush journey. Digital Man and Secret Touch both from the Snakes and Arrows tour are two that I recommend. Cheers 🇨🇦
The more you guys tell me about this particular solo and the man himself the more in awe I am of this skill and prowess! Thanks for the info and comment
Need to listen to Peter live on the secret world tour try in your eyes the full show is fantastic
I recommend you check out one of their first videos they did - Fly By Night from around 1975 ... You can see the influence that Chris Squire (Yes) has on Geddy Lee bass playing style, but relevant to this clip, check out the drum kit Neil had with Fly By Night, and compare it to this in Frankfurt.

The Professor was an incredible man. In addition to his wealth of talent, he was a traveler and writer. This video shows how drums can be melody. Throw in some big band and Buddy Rich! WOW! But Neal is NOT free-wheeling. He is THAT GOOD. Professionals practice until they can't get it wrong. Now you must find the drum duets of Phil Collins and Chester Thompson (Genesis). The coordination between them is mind-blowing and musical. Neal has said Phil Collins was one of his inspirations.

Have you listened to any Supertramp yet? If you want something a little different, try a song from their album ”Breakfast in America". Its a lighter vibe than Rush, but very unique sound.

Neil was definitely one of the true drumming masters of his craft. Next up - MOBY DICK by John Bonham / Led Zeppelin
Not that’s it’s important, but since you asked, it’s pronounced Peert
You can see how he influenced current prog metal drummers like Danny Carey of Tool and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater….. He snd Bonham of Zeppelin are the two classic rock drummers who are cited most often by drummers as having influenced their playing.
There was no freestyling. That solo is fully planned out and played precisely. There's a making of video on TH-cam where Neil is demonstrating and explaining to a group of reporters how he developed each part. All those horns you hear near the end were played by Neil and recorded. He is actually triggering each blast of the horns with a midi foot pedal during the solo.
@@kenmolinaro that just blows my tiny mind!!!
When other drummers solo, you hear drumming. When Neil solos, you hear music.
@@kenmolinaro 💯
Neil was one of a kind, amazing. If you like the solo, how about a duet? Two other prog masters, Bill Bruford sat in for Phil Collins back in 1976, while Phil assumed his new role as front man for Genesis. There are clips in TH-cam you will find of them dueting the second half of "Cinema Show:. It's good fun. Neil was a big fan of both of them. US Roadie 1 signing off ..
Lots of great live Rush, but you have to watch Xanadu 1981 Montreal. And YYZ in Rio.
