1947 insaniat de mathe te badnuma daag a shame for Punjabis. During pre-partition days Giani Zail Singh was then a leader of "Parja Mandal" a political outfit opposing Rajwara Shahi that is why he was detained tortured including dragging behind a jeep and jailed by king of Faridkot. Later he joined Congress. He rose to become Minister in Punjab State including Chief Minister during 1972 to 1977. He later became Home Minister of India and was appointed as President of India (1982-87). During his president-ship, infamous Blue Star happened. A devout Sikh, though he was constitutionally the Supreme Commander of Indian Army, he could do nothing to save Harmandar Sahib from being attacked by the Army which resulted into killing of thousands of devotees including destruction of Akal Takhat which ultimately took life of the then Prime Minister of India Smt.Indira Gandhi who was murdered by her own body guards. He also could do nothing to save thousands of innocent Sikhs across the country who were killed by the Congress Party goons out to take revenge of murder of Smt.Gandhi. He died in a road accident in 1994 when he was returning after paying obeisance at Anandpur Sahib the birthplace of Khalsa Panth (Sikhism).

Maharaja Harinder singh Brar was King of Faridkot
Qazi Ubaidullah the third person with them in prison was my grandfather. He spent most of his youth in prison. He was the amir of a caravan leaving for Pakistan he was captured before the caravan could set off and tortured and what his torturers thought was his dead body was thrown away but he actually survived . His caravan members came to pick up his body and found him alive. He eventually reached Pakistan. I actually have a letter from Gyani Zail Singh with an official stamp on it asking my grandfather to come meet him in india. My grandfather was ready to go and he got his visa but the indian embassy heaved a lot of objections on it and he never tried after that. We have been told over generations that Nana abu taught Gyani zail singh the Quran in prison.

Early life He was born in [Sandhwan], [Faridkot district] on 5 May 1916 to Kishan Singh. He was named Jarnail, meaning “General”, but as a young man, he changed his first name to Zail after being imprisoned several times for opposing the rule of the maharajah of Faridkot.[4] He was a Sikh by religion, was given the title of Gyani, as he was educated and learned about Guru Granth Sahib at Shaheed Sikh Missionary College in Amritsar
