    Ironic that Aelswith didn't like "Standing by while men made stupid decisions". If it had been up to her Alfred would have executed Uthred in season one then fled to Frankia when Guthrum captured Winchester and the Danes would rule the entire island. Aelswith also preferred to let Edward die of fever than have a pagan help him recover. Good thing her input was ignored in that situation. She's probably the most consistent character when it comes to making shit decisions.

    It's a shame you didn't include the Welsh King trying to take back the fortress that Sigtryggr is in as that would have have already shown how strategic and clever he is as a warrior. He trapped them and then disposed of them really quickly. The actor is Icelandic just for info.

  • @granddaddyotaku636
    @granddaddyotaku636 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Niiiice good episode. I think when it comes to Sigtrygger, the new Dane, he seems like an very intelligent man. I think Warriors respect a man who can lead them to victory. It’s not just brute strength that wins the battle. He seems like a very intelligent warrior, and if that’s the case then maybe it’s his intellect that makes him scary. Because he could be like Alfred, not necessarily a powerhouse of strength but definitely a powerful intellectual force. A wise man is scarier because he’ll think of things beyond what the average man can. I saw Alfred like that. I can sorta get a sense of that with Sigtryggr...
    Almost done with the season. Really want season 5 already lol

    • @kosovitz

      Where's proof of that intelligence? All he wanted was to sit on his arse in Wales. If it wasn't for Brida, that would have been the end of his story.

  • @ms_scribbles

    As much as I love the actor playing Father Pyrlig, I'm still grumpy that they didn't give it to a guy with a full-on Welsh accent since the character is from Wales, and it was fun listening to the audiobooks with the narrators reading his dialogue in that accent. I'm also vaguely disappointed that they made the scene where Uhtred gave the throne to Aethelflaed so serious, instead of the hilarious scene it was in the book. (Though, I understand why they didn't. It would have been a bit out of place in this episode.) They offer him the throne and they haggle over it until Uhtred makes them say he can choose whoever he wants as his successor. When they do, he sits down, then immediately abdicates and names Aethelflaed as his successor and hands her the crown, while the Wittan just stares in bemusement because he bamboozled them. It was great.

    • @ms_scribbles
      @ms_scribbles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it is true that there is a man in history called Uhtred the Bold that was the ruler of Northumbria. (He's also a distant ancestor of the author of the Last Kingdom book series, Bernard Cornwell.) HOWEVER, there is no way in hell that he's the same Uhtred, since Uhtred the Bold died over 100 years after the events of this story, in 1016CE. (The show is currently at 911CE, when Aethelred died and Aethelflaed became Lady of Mercia.) There was another ealdorman named Uhtred, but he's still a couple decades later than this story, and he wasn't the lord of Bamburgh (Bebbanburg), he was ruling in Derbyshire. The lord of Bebbanburg in this time was named Eadwulf, and after him was Ealdred. He's mostly fictional, but still plausible, which Bernard Cornwell is really good at. Fitting the fiction with historical reality like pieces of a puzzle.

    Uhtred in history was really called Uhtred The Bold & didn't exist in the time of Alfred. Aethelred & Alfred worked together in real life & Aethelflead & Aethelred worked together to secure their countries from the Danes & there is no indication that Aethelred was abusive to Aethelflead in real life, they only had 1 child together, a daughter named, Aelfwynn, the birth was so difficult that Aethelflead sustained form sexual contact. Aethelred really died form an illness & so did Aethelflead rather than from breast cancer in the show.

Aethelflead kept getting mad at him for any suitor for her daughter and she had a problem with everyone of them(reasonably so) but she felt like there was a better decision. Also I feel like he wouldn't be opposed to her ruling but the people didn't want her for it but all of a sudden they're fine with it???? Just trying to make Edward the villain for no reason if you ask me

      Yup, he's made to be a scapegoat, but it was her treachery and stupidity that caused him to go to Mercia in first place. • @kosovitz
      @kosovitz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@omar_elattar.6500 She's not butthurt she was enslaved, that happened to her earlier, she's angry that the same man was coming at her with told you so about Cnut a minute later did nothing to give her a way to Valhalla. Her whole world was destroyed that day and it was at the hands of a last person she had some kind of bond.
      Also all Danes killed Saxons and innocents and vice versa, if that puts you off, then what character do you enjoy on the show?

    • @omar_elattar.6500

      And that scene was horribly written. Uhtred knows what it’s like to be a slave and to not even vouch for Brida was so out of character. And all the blame doesn’t go to Uhtred, Brida could’ve got Valhalla if she wanted. She had a knife and an axe, charge the Welsh, fight and die. Uhtred would’ve ensured she died with a weapon in hand. And she wasn’t enslaved earlier, she was imprisoned. Two very different things.
      Wait what? When did I say that? I never once said that a character killing innocents automatically makes me dislike them. It’s just that Brida’s motivations don’t make much sense and it’s beyond ridiculous how she’s still pregnant after barely being fed and fighting battles lol.
