Screen Recording on GARMIN Edge GPS Bike Computers

- The current generation Garmin EDGE x40 GPS cycling computers have the hidden ability to screen record activities. This isn't an officially supported feature from Garmin, and does come with a few things you'll need to know if you want to capture your rides for overlays/replays/general shenanigans. I find this extremely useful for ride data overlays and showcasing new features rolling out on these devices.

REQUIREMENTS
Garmin EDGE 540*/840/1040 Series. (Possibly the Explore 2 as well).
BETA firmware. (Hopefully this will also be in the production firmware soon!)
Enough storage on the EDGE to save the screen recordings.
Access to the hidden menu (Press and hold the RIGHT arrow for two seconds on any data page of an activity).
HOW IT WORKS
Screenshots are saved every 0.5 seconds (2Hz) as BMP files.
BMP location: \Garmin\ScreenRecorder\datetime\0
Once activated it'll continue saving screen shots until the option is disabled or Edge powered off.
Warning! This results in a LOT of files. 7,200 files per hour. (be sure to delete them once you copy them off the unit!)

Man, these are the videos I come to when I need to figure something out on my Garmin. Except getting HR from my watch to the headunit, that didn't work as expected (I should try again, probably my error).

I have a 1040 Solar and I just won the 24.15 beta. The menu layout has changed and now in the activity after touching the screen there is no arrow menu - instead the Home and Danger icons appear.
The arrows are displayed after pulling the top menu there are arrows but holding them does nothing.
How do I activate these hidden menus in 24.15?

This is... interesting, if not a complete, flaming kludge. Garmin, why not put this effort into updating Virb? All those files to worry about and finesse into a video is a pita. All I need is data overlays sync'd to my video files. (And if GoPro could work out how to create chunks over 5m long that would be a great help too!)
With them no longer supporting their VIRB cameras, VIRB Edit has followed those to the grave. It looks like the new Insta360 action cam has some kind of Garmin Connect support for importing of FIT data.
On Beta Firmware, but the screen recording option is not showing. (newest beta 23.09 Edge 1040). Wanted to use as Virb Edit replacement. No longer available, or something else?

@@gplama v23.10 is the screen recording menu.
You enter it by pressing and holding your finger on the screen at the spot to the right of the "HOME" icon (lower right corner of the screen).
Of the new things in this menu is "Fit File Playback" :)
Possible options are from the activity file or course :)
You can speed up playback, time-shift. Curiosity :)

X40 series videos. X40 series videos everywhere!!! 😭😭😭 (1030+ owner here). 😂😂😂 (1st World Problems)
I was pretty vocal when it came to the 1030 Plus being sunsetted a little too soon. No updated UI. No ClimbPro free ride. No config via Connect Mobile. It's still a great unit though.

Linux users will likely find ffmpeg already installed and ready to use. If not, your package-manager will add it promptly.
BMP format is such a space-hungry format. JPG would have been much better
Straight to MP4 on the other units is so handy!
BMP is most likely uncompressed, so it doesn't need as much processing power like jpg or even a mp4 file would. However there are some compression types they could use in BMP if there is another reason for this file format.
