A young lady thrust into a world like no other lives the life only some can dream of-her own fairytale. When Prince Charles of Wales announced his engagement to Lady Diana, the world turned on its side. Everybody wanted to catch a glimpse of the new bride. Diana was an overnight sensation; the public loved her. Unfortunately, the fairytale royal lifestyle was not what she thought it would be. Cracks began to form in the royal relationship. Everything seemed fine through the eyes of the public; however, their relationship was slowly crumbling.

At 1.14 Paul Burell repeats the story from his book A Royal Duty in which he wrote "I saw Diana on the morning of the wedding to Charles with her train bundled under one arm and her slippers in the other hand running down Principal Corridor at Buckingham Palace.(The Center Room with the famous balcony is accessed via the grand looking Principal Corridor).
However, Diana spent the night before the wedding at Clarence House, the Queen Mothers home from where she left in the Glass Coach to St Paul's Cathedral.
I believe he was referring to the morning of the wedding breakfast at Buckingham Palace - after the wedding. But please don’t quote me on that.
The other thing is that by the time the wedding day arrived, she knew she was making a horrible mistake but felt trapped with the eyes of the world on her. And Paul Burrell has made a fortune cashing in on his association with her. The more time that goes by, the more elaborate his memories get and it’s reached the point where I really don’t believe anything he says anymore. I think it’s all in his head.

Ultimately Charles had no respect for Diana, who knows why, maybe because she was so much younger and inexperienced, that seemed to be a gripe for him that was likely rooted in jealousy and narcissism. He had a lustful spontaneous relationship with Camilla and they were clearly a better match chemistry wise, but he didn’t for a moment consider Diana’s well-being and humanity, nobody did. All his life he didn’t really have to consider anyone else but himself so it’s no wonder why.
I had hoped this would be a more positive view of their marriage. I’d love a documentary that talks about the good years at the beginning.
When there are no true feelings you can't force it. King Charles is so happy with Camilla, after so many years we should accept it. It is important to have a King who is happy! Diana was so innocent and different, wanted to enjoy life, wheras Charles loved reading and gardening. Also the age difference might have been difficult for them to cope with.

Diana unfortunately had mental health issues and married at a very young age this could contribute greatly to any arrested development on her part

It takes my breath away to sit and think of the pressure she was under......sink or swim.......and she made it look easy from the very beginning. And outshone everyone while doing so!
A modern young woman? She was only 19yo and very aristocratic. She lived in an apartment her daddy bought her and she shared with handpicked roommates. She wore the family’s diamond tiara for her wedding for heaven’s sake. She was very pretty, undereducated (by choice) and naive. It was an arranged marriage obvious to everyone but Diana. And showing the Bashir interview after it was proven that Bashir lied and manipulated Diana into appearing in it is low.

Diana was an assistant at the Nursery. She was never a teacher. She had left school two years early because she had failed every single O Level two years running. She was incapable of completing a secondary education. I think it was likely nerves that kept her from concentrating.

You should think about how Charles was brought up, in royal circles it was common practice not to marry for love, he may have thought that was normal, how was he supposed to know that it wasn't normal.
It's easy for all of us to blame Charles now, I think he was a victim just like Diana. His grandma - Queen Mum and Diana's grandma - Lady Ruth Fermoy arranged this whole wedding and he was made to believe that he had to marry her for the good of the country

I'm always surprised when people claim that Charles revealed something new in his 1994 interview. He hadn't. The tapes with the explicit conversation with Camilla had already been released a few years earlier. The whole world knew that he and Camilla were back together. There were also similar recordings of Diana and her boyfriend James Gilby, where, interestingly, a key sentence, namely that she feared she was pregnant, was not initially released. Only later did come out that Diana had numerous lovers. So it was ridiculous to talk about a „revenge dress“ and I don’t believe Paul that Diana felt humiliated by this interview. Their marriage was definitely over around 1985, from then on BOTH behaved as if they were unmarried. And with her Morton book Diana had revealed far more than Charles ever did.

@@melgrant7404 She told HER version of the truth. Charles side of the story would certainly sound very different. Only he didn’t tell it in public. There is no need to denigrate and humiliate people on national TV, some obscure tapes from a „speech coach“ or in a book. No decent person would do such a thing just for the sake of public sympathy. I used to be an ardent Diana fan, but she completely lost me after the Morton book. Because it was as clear as day that SHE was behind it, despite her initial denial.
@iceprincess3981 don't forget Charles did an interview with dimpleby first and Diana reacted to that.charles interview was on TV so he did go public first. She was actually defending herself from his interview.of course their versions are going to be different.

Not so easy when you are being thaught from an early age that the first and most important reason for your existence is to become king and serve your country. This also included finding a suitable future queen - not necessarily a suitable wife for himself. In the seventies, the royal family was still haunted by the abdication crisis of the thirties. No wonder Charles didn't want to hurt his parents by repeating history. It took him several decades to finally stand his ground and make it clear that Camilla was not "negotiable". I believe all of this would no longer be an issue if Diana hadn't died so young. As with many people who die young, myths have been created that have little or nothing to do with the real person. A living Diana would never have been put on a pedestal, her popularity would probably have faded, the first signs of this were already evident at the time of her death. But Charles and Camilla have stepped out of her shadow, and I am happy for them.

Are you American? That's not how it works in the British Royal Family. You may be aware that the marriage of the Prince of Wales is of extreme importance, and he has less freedom than any of his brothers. The primary focus of the King is to provide an heir and that heir has to be of suitable blood. At the time of Charles' marriage, they were still locked into the idea that the prospective Queen had to be a virgin. One of the things which was changed after the death of Diana, when they realised that arranged marriages with aristocracy or foreign royalty wasn't always ideal.

@@Indy44636 In her final years he worked exclusively for Diana. After their unofficial separation around 1985/86 neither hid their new partners from each other. Till their official separation in 1992 Diana still spent weekends at Highgrove, but she and Charles did their best to avoid each other. However , staff remember that the atmosphere at these weekends was terribly tense . It seems to be true, that after Diana had left for London, Camilla was a frequent visitor. As were Diana’s lovers at their home in Kensington Palace. Nothing wrong with that, I just don’t like these double standards.
