The BBC has just reported a car burning itself into the carriage way in Berkshire on Saturday. For some reason they haven't mentioned what kind of car it is?
Sounds about right. I'm in the U.S. state of Arizona. The HOTTEST state in the U.S. 115 degrees F for 4+ months a year. I have a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis (large V8 rear wheel drive gas powered car) That I bought 11 years ago, with 87,000 miles on it. I have since put another 8,000 miles on it, and was recently offered $13,000 USD for it. I turned it down. I wouldn't take $20,000 USD for it. Nice older gas powered cars are definitely going up in value here. You can't even get a new gas powered vehicle here that isn't loaded with spy devices, a 24/7 WiFi connection to the manufacturer, and a driver interference system that can take control of the car away from the driver. People are desperate to get nice older normal cars. I'm glad I have mine.

Yep the diesel tax here is not very helpful for a regular driver, too expensive. But if you drive a lot as part of your job, then it can work in your favour I guess. I haven't seen this downturn in EV car prices here. In-fact I think prices are normal compared to the rest of Europe, which is generally more expensive than the UK. The cheapest 2019 Model S with 75K KM or less, on NettiAuto starts at 49K€ (approx £41K) so I don't understand the trade-in offer that Geoff discussed. But maybe I'm not seeing the full picture, after all I'm not a trader.
I'm also from Finland, and this kind of headline would NEVER make the news here, as most of the media is praising the EV gospel with absolutely zero criticism. I just red a story yesterday about EV sales dropping, on one of the biggest public media service website, but I have to say that article still had more than less pro-EV tone. They had dug up all kinds of 'economists' and 'experts' for weighting in, how this is just temporary drop and such. Not a single word about the EVs being failure-prone, not providing their promised range and not being too expensive for regular folks. The same media covered a story about Toyota some time ago, and the message in that story was basically that Toyota 'couldn't' keep up with the EV race, rather than they 'decided' not to focus too much on it. That said, my wife traded her car last February. A diesel into diesel. I traded mine last March. A diesel into another evil diesel.
Perhaps one of the reasons things are apparently dire of used EV sales in Finland is that it gets pretty cold there and EVs are useless is very low temperatures. Remember the Danish guy with the electric toaster under his EV to warm up the battery? ( he succeeded btw 🤣) It's amazing how things go backwards. Once upon a time Volvos and Saabs were built by Nordic engineers to work in Nordic Countries, but now globalisation and financialisation mean that cars are built by mad idealogues and greedy accountants (to work in the dreams of E.U. bureaucrats & Californian Lefties.)
@@unfurling3129 I agree, but even in warm countries they are not suitable, because they are expensive batteries on wheels, rather than cars with batteries that can be swapped out, etc, like the 1800s EVs.
Well. maybe they don't believe all the nonsense, EVs have an app where you can pre warm up the car in the morning so it's all defrosted and comfy when you get in it. My EV was absolutely brilliant in the winter, but you don't want to hear that do you..... You would rather belief that ridiculous story about Teslas in Chicago last year wouldn't you 😂😂😂😂

The fact that this email is from Finland brought to mind an issue that I cannot say that I have ever heard mentioned with regard to BEVs. Namely, that as a matter of physics low temperatures increase a battery's internal resistance and therefore impedes the release of energy, i.e., at below zero degrees Celsius, a battery looses around 80% of its charge. Furthermore, it is considered dangerous to recharge a battery in temperatures of -5 C or below per battery manufacturers themselves. This applies to all types of battery and has been a known fact for well over a century, hence the reason that early 20th Century electric cars powered by lead-acid batteries never took off and were gone by about 1910. For some strange and unfathomable reason, EV fanboys in either the mainstream media or online media never seem to mention this particular downside to BEVs which must really be the elephant in the room whenever the compulsory imposition by government of electric vehicle ownership is mentioned, particularly in Canada and the Scandinavian countries.
You do know that electric cars have a heating circuit for the battery, so that it works to warm the battery first, in very cold temperatures, before it charges it. I guess that is why fanboys never make mention of this horrible problem you speak of.
@@typhoon320i That heating circuit uses electricity. Guess what it does to range. Nothing is free in physics. It's a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul.
@@francomartini4328 well of course it does. Who would think otherwise. It either comes from the battery or the charger. You talked about it being "dangerous". Now you are changing your argument to "less range". Weak sauce.

But perhaps you know better than battery manufacturers?
@@francomartini4328 But when you have a heating system for the battery it can be kept warmer than -5 C. The battery manufacturer is not making the whole car.

It's probably still worth what i paid for it!! Youngest just passed their driving test in it the other week.
Hi Geoff, just got back from Sweden and there was a shitload of electric cars in Stockholm. I was concerned about parking my rented Ford Focus (petrol 6 speed) in the underground garage with the Teslas parked there plugged in. Took a two mile $45 cab ride in an electric Toyota (first time in an electric car) and the driver said they are banning all normal cars in central Stockholm next year. I was in Helsinki last summer and did not notice as many electric cars there. I will stick with my 173,000 mile Lincoln Town Car. Cheers, Doug
I suggest it's nothing to do with intelligence and more to do with a lack of common sense and logic, and the lack of ability of some people to see through government manipulation. (after all, even after the last 30 years, there were still a lot of intelligent people that still voted conservative (or labour) hoping for a meaningful improcvement to their standard of living.
As a tow truck driver in the states, i've noticed there are two types of EV owners, ones that regret buying one as they find out it's not what they were told it was and can do/does, and those that force the smile, still telling people to buy them and that they're the greatest thing ever as we tow them to a shop with something like 10k to 50K in repairs that a regular ICE car would have cost 1K to 10K to fix and have to drive a ICE rental car for months and months till they can afford the repairs, find someone that will work on it or buy another EV. Edit, I'd like to add that we've never towed a Lucid or Rivian yet with any issues, but i did tow a Rivian to a super charger when the owner ran out of juice and the charger said it would take about a hour and 10 minutes from 0% to 80% at a estimated cost of $80 dollars and range of 220 miles. If they choose to let it charge to 100% (which said it would take about 2 hours and 30 minutes, this does change from time to time depending on the power demand on the grid at said time, and also note that some charging will turn off without notice if not enough power can go to them at said time, I've been told Tesla's are really good at keeping up with this when it happens but other makes like GM, Kia, Ect.... may take up to 6 hours to update the system when looking for charging space) would be at a cost of $157 dollars, It costs me $136 to fill up my Ram 1500 and i can go 520 miles where as they're paying $157 and only going 390 miles. I just paid $41,600.00 for a new 2025 Ram and they told me they paid $84,300.00 for their 2024 R1T. I'm sorry but where is common sense here??? These are California numbers mind you but still, damn!!!

@WhiteDieselShed Landsail tyres are classed as budget tyres and don't last particularly long. When buying tyres, look at the lable. Go for as an example: Wet Braking: A Noise: 68 or 69db Fuel: A Cl: A In that order of priority. The ratings go from A to G, with A being the best. You wouldn't want a tyre with Wet Braking of G. Even one with a C rating is terrible when the road is slightly moist.
Hi Geoff, you may have already covered this, but did you hear about the climate scientists criticising the use of a hydrogen Toyota at the Paris Olympics. Failing to convince me its not all about control.

Geoff, I would love it if you would do a show or two about retro fitting and ice engine, complete with it's cooling and exhaust systems into an EV. Can it even be done? Is there still life for a 1.3L Ford focus engine and gubbins - or a Fiesta ST3 engine!! The way I see it the rest of the car's bodywork should be pristine, so what's preventing anyone from ripping out the EVer ready battery and slotting in an ICE?
Excellent, will look out for that, it's just like reverse engineering and has the benefit of pissing off the greens. It would be nice to see a more workaday project, something like a 2.0 litre diesel for example, could call it an E-Vice 😂
I found the difference in tyres normally boils down to how many miles they can cover, and grip. Try braking hard on a wet road and see how many times the ABS has to intervene on a cheap tyre and a good tyre.

So in a previous video you talked about Merc vans loosing £70k in two years. And a 2 year old with 7000 on clock was for sale about £18k. Now, as a man with short arms and deep pockets my ears pricked up. I will be 65 next birthday so how does the second hand EV market place look for someone like me. Do used EV's cars devalue at a simaler rate. If yes then which could possibly best value. Currently drive 2 litre diesel Kuga with 40k on clock. Annual mileage is now about 8k so the current car could see me out. But there has to be a point where using the market value does make sense. Just to be clear, "Climate Change" is BS!!! But I also like to keep my money helping me. So is there a switching point when the cost over shame of driving an EV becomes worthwhile. Look forward to hearing your thought. Be lucky stay safe.
Yes an EV can make sense if you buy used and offer them stupidly small amounts and keep offering them the money until they take it or do eventually sell it elsewhere. If you can charge at home with the car far enough away from the house just in case it does catch fire it wont burn the house down at the same time. Only do fairly short distances then it may make sense. 2L diesel Kuga with just 40k is a lifetime car. That engine will do 300k easily.
I was not the least bit interested in buying an EV untill you just said about a Testicle for 3 grand. At that money it would make for a good little runabout, to keep the miles off my V6 skoda.
I live in Finland Geoff, the winters here are brutal and two of the guys I work with had to get rid of their hybrid cars last winter because they wouldn't charge due to the cold. (There are only 14 people in the company I work in)
Begs the question why the person with the Tesla didn't put the car through the auction themselves. 2700 Euros better then a 25 yr old 900 Euro Focus. While I'm fully on board with the anti-EV backlash, the details in the email just dont ring entirely true. Yes, EVs probably aren't best suited to cold climes but are people really dropping 10s of thousands of euros and buying bangers when there must be other options open to them to recover a little more of their money

I love the 405, I drove many as company cars back in the 1990's, they were fuel efficient, roomy estates and reliable and i was completely happy with when I had a 405 from the car pool.
I sold them for years when they were new, nothing wrong with them other than they’re french. But I also sold Volvo cars, and whilst it was not yesterday, they were in a different league. And I agree with the comment on the 505 as well, but find one now. Testament to the Volvo range you can go back to the 60’s and they are still in abundance. That said, it was not criticism, just light hearted banter on my part.

Myself and the ex went to our local dealers to have a look around a few months back Skoda were, if you remember, extremely pushy for her to get an EV. We walked away and eventually she got a Peugeot 3008 diesel. The Skoda dealer has been closed and derelict for months.......
skoda literally have one full EV as part of their range, and they have forecourts full of ICE and a few EVs, so if it went tits up it's down to the ICE selection.

Landsail / linglong / etc, always perish and crack to death way before the tread wears out. Interestingly, i had a low mileage electric polestar volvo thing in for mot yesterday, the brake pads and alloy wheels had "made in china" written on them. And then i spotted the factory fitted michelin tyres were made in china as well. 😂
The tyres are one thing I never save money on. Only Michelin, Continental etc. They cost more but for example on the Fiat a good set of Michelin still didn't cost much. It's the sporty cars where you pay through the nose.
Lol, landsails are called that because they aqua plane so much that you are literally sailing on the road. They are rubbish tyres. I had them on one of my cars for about a week before I had them removed again! Sorry.
as a Finn, that e-mail you got is full of rubbish. I follow the auction sites all the times and have never seen a Tesla go that cheap. unless they have a hidden auction between the car dealers. Cheapest Tesla on sale right now is a 2016 model S with the 70kwh battery and it got 224 000km on it and the price is 20500€ A Bmw of that year with that amount of Km on it is about half that price. Prices have come down due to the car dealers Importing old Teslas from Europe, but they get sold within a couple weeks time. Wasn't that long ago a 2014 Tesla was worth over 30 000€ with similar km on it. Which is the main reason I stay away from ev's, the prices just keep falling down. Boss got an Id4, brand new 3 years ago, it cost 70 000€, now it's worth 30 000€. Lucky for him it's a company car on lease and he doesn't have to pay for it. But any normal person couldn't afford such a huge dip in prices.
well - in the UK there are auctions between dealers. So I assume the same in Europe. Basically it is on-line between dealers who want to get rid of the stock they have taken in as exchanges for what sits on their forecourt but which they know they would never sell themselves. Like the email writer said - they cant service or check the EV's handed in, so they have to go for re-sale for whatever they can get. Who buys a second hand car from a forecourt without some sort of guarantee?
It may be advertised for 20k. But it will not sell for that.220k EV is worth very little. I am a dealer in Oz. And watch these eleccy toys month after month have the prices cut regularly. Worse so many people are stuck with them as they are financed big time. Tesla owners were paying 70k for a car now selling for under 50k And they are not selling quickly. Trade in value is very small as dealers do not want the hassles with them. And one major dealer cannot buy or sell them otherwise his business insurance is null and void. If they had wanted too!

In china nonetheless, where quality is not n.1
"EVs are useless is very low temperatures."
I'd argue that temperature is irrelevant...
@G-ra-ha-m How so? Low temp drops battery performance (ie range) at the same time extra demands are placed for heating.
@@unfurling3129 I agree, but even in warm countries they are not suitable, because they are expensive batteries on wheels, rather than cars with batteries that can be swapped out, etc, like the 1800s EVs.
EVs are even less suited to a cold climate like Finland, why would people buy there them in the first place?
Lot's and lots of government incentives including a lower car tax.
Showing off?
Tax on diesel cars is 1k a year. So crap governence is a thing here in Finland too!
Because they have no alternative.....
Well. maybe they don't believe all the nonsense, EVs have an app where you can pre warm up the car in the morning so it's all defrosted and comfy when you get in it.

Weak sauce.
@@typhoon320i re-read what I said originally. It clearly states, "...it is considered dangerous to recharge a battery in temperatures of -5 C or below _per battery manufacturers_ themselves." In other words, it is not my claim; I am merely repeating what the subject matter experts have stated to be their recommendations on the use of their product. But perhaps you know better than battery manufacturers?
@@francomartini4328 But when you have a heating system for the battery it can be kept warmer than -5 C. The battery manufacturer is not making the whole car.

This is more of a bubble than the "South Seas Bubble" of the 18th century!
But the government told them EV's are good 🤣🤣😂😂
I suggest it's nothing to do with intelligence and more to do with a lack of common sense and logic, and the lack of ability of some people to see through government manipulation.
These are California numbers mind you but still, damn!!!

well - in the UK there are auctions between dealers.
@@stevenjones916 Something to do with his balls apparently.......i assume he has not replied as he's nipped off down to the local clinic to get them checked out !

Finland , Finland , Finland.. it’s the place for me .. MP!
Very entertaining. Made me laugh.
Finland is beautiful. Cold and long nights in winter...ev battery unfriendly...😂
I have a 1998 Citroen EV which has NiCd batteries, not only is it still working after 26 years, the batteries work just as well if not better in the cold. There is a reason why the use these batteries on satellites , they last a long time and don't mind cold.
Is there enough cadmium on the planet to supply billions of cars' batteries? 🤔
