    Is this the only mixer you need? I've been livestreaming solo music performances for 10 years, using lots of different setups. Some worked well, some were a nightmare. It's hard to focus on your performance and find time to experiment when things aren't plug and play - enter the Boss Gigcaster 8!
    I was super excited to try this out, and I'm thankful to Roland/Boss for sending me this incredible piece of gear as a gift. Please note: I was under no obligation to say anything nice, or anything at all, and my opinions will always be honest. I am not employed or endorsed by Roland/Boss or any other company.

    I agree wholeheartedly about reserving the right to play along to backing tracks of my own songs. What's the alternative? Play a guitar or keyboard version of a song that you've already fully recorded and produced and 'realised' your vision of a song......only then to try and sell your song by playing a version that has none of the intricacies of the recorded version. Some songs can work scaled down but some can't.

      Hi! Not a dumb question at all, but I'm sorry to say I don't have an answer for you. I sometimes do the recording of my livestreams pre-fader so that I don't have any effects printed on, and then I just add stuff in Logic X when I mix the tracks for release (I release every livestream as a limited edition download on Bandcamp). I'm not aware of being able to add the actual Boss effects afterwards to the recording, though it may well be possible inside the Gigcaster. if they build Looper into the unit that could be used with the sample pads it would be the ultimate musician mixer, Q? why dont you setup the usb output to your computer as a multitrack record into your DAW?

    • @Penfriendrocks
      @Penfriendrocks  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting! So what instrument would you put through an inbuilt looper? I’m so used to using a looper with a foot switch (usually because I’m playing an instrument at the same time or want to be less obvious about starting and stopping it) that I don’t think I’d use that, but it’s cool to hear what other people want to do. To answer your question, I have always veered away from adding a computer into a live environment, when I started out they were very unreliable so it’s just a habit that’s stuck for many years. I’ve been enjoying using the inbuilt multitrack recorder, feeling safe (ish) that I’m not going to lose any files, and importing everything after the show. But it’s great there are all these different ways of using the Gigcaster. Thanks for watching and for saying hi!

      It's supposed to be fine with stuff like that, though Streamyard is a better and more direct idea for that sort of thing (that's how we did our release week livestream). The Gigcaster is certainly designed to be able to have phonecalls patched into the desk, no reason you couldn't send computer audio through to it as well but, again, better to go direct into Streamyard.

    Great review, best I have seen. Finally someone who uses this unit in a real context !
    Now about using your real amp : you could do this " in silence " with an device like a captor x or bluebox ( if you have a tube amp you need a dummy load !!!) These devices take the speaker out signal from your amp and then simulate a speaker and a mic capturing that speaker). Just a little tip ;-)

    • @Penfriendrocks

      Thank you for the kind compliment! And yes, I was looking into the Captor X not long ago, but they only work if you have a separate amp and cab don't they? Mine's a Fender Princeton combo, so no dice for me sadly.

    Hello Penfriend. Thank you for this great video. I am very interested in the Gigacaster, but I had a few questions. Why do you need your audio interface when using the Gigacaster? I have a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4. If I bought the Gigacaster, could I sell that AI?

    • @Penfriendrocks
      @Penfriendrocks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, Mike! I plugged the Gigcaster into my audio interface for two reasons:
      1) My interface is plugged into my speakers and I have short speaker cables, so it would have been a faff to unplug everything.
      2) I wanted to record the two channels out of the Gigcaster in Logic as a backup because I didn't know what the internal recording on the Gigcaster would sound/look like and I was making this video and couldn't gamble with that.
      Unless I'm missing something, in my limited experience with multitrack recording on the Gigcaster it's not a replacement for your interface.
      Watch this official Boss video about recording with the Gigcaster: th-cam.com/video/mihsmeqQrF0/w-d-xo.html
      I need to experiment with the Audio Mode setting it mentions to see if using it as an interface is possible.
      What I do know is that for the multitrack recording, you press record on the Gigcaster, then you stop the recording and transfer the multitrack recording file from the Gigcaster to your computer hard drive via USB (which can take a while). You then drag that single file into your DAW and it unpacks the multitracks for you as well as the stereo recordings. So it's wonderful for recording live performances, or for experimenting with whatever you're rehearsing/writing live into the mixer - and that's all I was looking for.
      I was thinking of doing a followup video where I explain the recording aspect of the machine, so let me know if that would be helpful and if you have any specific questions I should make sure I answer.
      Thanks for watching and for saying hi!

      @@PenfriendrocksI believe it can act as an audio interface that can multitrack directly through a DAW.

      @@45zapatero Huh - there's nothing in the manual about it and I haven't come across that functionality (though I was never intending to use it that way tbh). I'll take another look soon at that!

      The Boss is a multitrack audio interface - you no longer need the other one!

    Anyone know why Windows would see this but no audio input is coming in? The mixer sees my voice but windows will not. Driving me nuts. Drivers are up to date. Settings are right...

      I hope you find the answer to your question! I'm not a Windows user so can't comment I'm sorry to say.
