Well done, as always! I couldn't help thinking that you should warn some authorities somewhere about what is likely to happen in that corner of the pier on December 29, 2020. I am imagining a bunch of camerapeople bashing each other to get that one spot. LOL. You have done a great job presenting this, and I thank you very much for that. Any planning I do will be of this (at home) type since my photography is done in forays according to a schedule created by my wonderful wife so I pretty much get what's there when I arrive. At least this way, I can see what might be available and plan for that. I will not be on the pier as I'm too far away, but I am marking my Calendar to check the news this December. Be safe and be well.
LOL! Glad you enjoyed it and can have some fun planning. In all honesty, the majority of the photography I do is unplanned, but it's still good to know how to plan and use the various tools out there when you have the opportunity to use them.
Thank you Brenda! You teach via the fire hose method, but I brought a towel. And I think I am getting some of this stuff. The only part I don't totally follow is the height differential between your photo location and the top of the subject. It seems like funny math.
Omg this was so helpful! I’ve been wondering how people do it. I’ve done the night AR and played around with the moon position but this is way more precise!
Thank you Brenda. I live in the DC area and thought a shot from Lincoln Mem with the moon over the Washington Mon would be cool. Could even get a nice reflection. I see I can’t get the shot I’d like but now know when I can get the next best shot. Thanks again.
Thanks a lot for your awsome serie of PhotoPills. Love every epidsode. Curious if you och anyone else made the shot of the statue? Next chance is just a couple of years away. 😊
Hi, thanks for the great video. Easy to follow and understand. The question i have when it gives the time of the moon, is the time your time or local time?
Hi Wayne - great question. The time in the timeline of the planner is the time of the location of the red pin. You can move the timeline forward and backward to change the time, and you can also tap on the timeline to pull up the date and time settings to set the time and date manually. From there, you can also select whether or not your current location's timezone is autodetected or not.
Great explanation. To be very nitty gritty: Height of the black pin was discussed, but what about the height of the red pin? The height of the camera / pier needs to be taking in account as well.
Excellent, I go to this location all the time and I’ve been trying to get a shot with the sunsetting behind the torch and the moon as well. But I didn’t have PhotoPills to help.
Thanks again for another informative video. I look forward to PhotoPills Friday. I’m confused about one thing: I thought PhotoPills already takes into account the difference in elevation between the red and black pin; therefore you don’t need to add that to the statue elevation. But I noticed you added it when calculating the apparent height. Please confirm this. Many thanks!
Hi Merrill, Glad you're enjoying the series! PhotoPills does take into account the elevation difference between the red and black pins *except* for when the black pin is on a man-made object, such as a statue or building. In this case, the black pin takes into account the elevation of the structure at ground level, which is why you have to research the height of the structure to be able to calculate the desired apparent height of the moon.
@@outdoorphotographyschool7366 . Hi Brenda. Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I understand that we have to add the height of the statue to determine the apparent height we want the moon to be. But I thought PhotoPills already took into account the ground level elevation difference between the red and black pin - meaning we only enter 305ft in the elevation box for "Apparent height above blue pin". That is what I was trying to say in my first comment. Thanks again.
@@merrillthompson8248 - I believe Merrill is correct. An earlier version of photopills required you to adjust manually for differences in elevation between the red and black pins. But the current version already accounts for this. So an adjustment is no longer needed with the latest Photopills version. Excellent video instruction by the way. I've taken a Photopills workshop from one of the designers, and I'm still learning from this series. Thank you Brenda!
I’m really liking this series! I’ve been using PhotoPills for several years, but this more disciplined course is teaching me things I’ve never gotten to. One question about this episode: Why do I get 0’ of elevation between these points while you get 16’? I’ve reset the points at either end and still get 0’.
Hi Michael - I'm so glad you are enjoying the series. Another viewer had the same question, and I have not been able to replicate the scenario on my phone, so I will reach out to PhotoPills and see if they can help explain it.
Hi Michael - As I said to Steve above, I checked in with The Bard from PhotoPills, and he said that the only thing that could be different is the Elevation Provider. So, go to My Stuff-->Settings-->Elevation Provider and choose Google Api, which is more accurate. Let me know how it goes.
Outdoor Photography School with Brenda Petrella Humm....I’ve tried both elevation providers, reset the pins and even rebooted my entire iPhone (and iPad since both are reading the same) and I still get zero. Curious.
@@cmichaelhaugh8517 Hmm. That is puzzling. It worked for another viewer who had the same question. I put a link in the description to the plan so that people could download it to their phones. I'd be curious to know whether that corrects the issue or not for you. If you try it, let me know.
@@outdoorphotographyschool7366 Thank you Michael for your question. I've been going nuts trying to figure it out too. Google Api was the key. BTW, Thank you Outdoor Photography School!
Hi Brenda, big fan of your photos, work and videos - full respect to you. This video is excellent as you go through the basics to the end, one question. On duplicating the location on the same subject my distance, azimuth is the same as yours but the altitude difference on my ipad is 0ft / -0.01 degrees. My moon height is 1.71mi from black pin (size 70ft). Where your figures are different - could you please advise (many thanks Lee)
Hi Lee - thanks! Glad the videos are helpful! Yes, it seems that when people get different results as you describe, it's because we are using different elevation providers. So, go to My Stuff --> Settings --> Elevation Service Provider. I use Google because it's supposed to be more accurate.
Your videos are way more helpful (and easier ot understand) than those from Photocells. What I still do not understand is how to START with picking an upcoming date for the full moon and then track down a location. I live on a bay so I'm fine with getting a shot with the moon reflecting on the water (rather than trying to coordinate its position with a stationary building or object. Can you help with that?
Brenda, all of your PhotoPills videos are really well done! I've watched many tutorials on PhotoPills in the past; some good some bad some too confusing...you have a great way of explaining the PhotoPills app, thank you! Quick question; I noticed that sometime my "Pin to Pin Geodetic" panel shows Milky Way Arch vs Moon height..why is that, is their way to change it?
I'm glad the videos are helping you, Robert! Yes, there is a way to change that whether or not the moon height or milky way arch are showing at the bottom of the pin to pin geodetic panel. For one, if the MW map layer is off, then you won't see the MW arch info. If the timeline is set to a time when it is a new moon (so no moon at night), then the MW arch info will be there (if the MW map layer is on). Hope that helps.
I have owned PhotoPills for over two years now, and thanks to your videos I am "getting it"! Thanks so much. One thing isn't working for me in this episode no matter how closely I follow the video however - after I get to the point where I place the two pins, I am getting the identical values you show in the geodetic pin panel EXCEPT the altitude difference is always 0 feet. I have entered, and re-entered the Object Height but get the same result. I think this affects my search results when PhotoPills calculates dates, because it finds no dates. Please help. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!
***IMPORTANT UPDATE*** - PhotoPills has updated the app so that you NO LONGER need to add both the height of the building and the elevation difference between the red and black pins when calculating the apparent height of the moon over a building -- you only need to input the height of the building.
Is it ever necessary to take camera height into account?
Thank you for that specific note - great help!!

Brilliant tutorial - one simple question. Height of moon? Is this the height of the lowest part of the visible moon?
I have owned PhotoPills for over two years now, and thanks to your videos I am "getting it"! Thanks so much. One thing isn't working for me in this episode no matter how closely I follow the video however - after I get to the point where I place the two pins, I am getting the identical values you show in the geodetic pin panel EXCEPT the altitude difference is always 0 feet. I have entered, and re-entered the Object Height but get the same result. I think this affects my search results when PhotoPills calculates dates, because it finds no dates. Please help. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!
