    “This is my song”
Music by Jean Sibelius (tune Finlandia)
    Words by Lloyd Stone 1934 (v. 1 & 2); Georgia Harkness (v. 3)
Voices of Concinnity sang this song at the end of each of their performances during 2018-19 Season, asking the audience to join in the singing on the third verse
These stanzas, published during the period between the two world wars, express a hope for lasting peace among all nations, races, and cultures. Finlandia is derived from a “tone poem” of the same name by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.
    Text:
This is my song, Oh God of all the nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
    This is my home, the country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my sacred shrine.
But other hearts in other lands are beating.
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.
My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine.
But other lands have sunlight too and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
O hear my song, Oh God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.
May truth and freedom come to every nation
May peace abound where strife as raged so long
That each may seek to love and build together
A world united, righting every wrong.
A world united in its love for freedom,
Proclaiming peace together in one song

Beautiful song. Especially for countries where war, terrorism, jihadism and sadism rule! I wish, so much for all the inhabitants to get peace.

Thank you for this beautiful rendition of a most-beloved song that brings me back to a quieter, more peaceful era of time... sending up a prayer for you all, & for the world to finally know the same peace this music gives me. Again, many more thanks, & God bless you!!!
Now I have to replay this precious song about 446,000,000,003 more times... I have some dear friends, born & raised in Finland, who will be so happy to hear this that they will cry like I just did--& will share it with their loved ones(their dear grandmother is 107 yrs old today!!! This will be the best birthday present she can receive, & I know she'll be singing right along with you, from the deepest part of her sweet & loving heart.
I need to remember to ask her how to say "thank you" in Finnish!!)

I'm of Finnish heritage and this song is one of my favorites and reminds me of the wars with Russia in the past just as Ukraine is battling now.
I'm sure they will win just as Finland has and the prayers from all over the world has GOD on their side.

There are lands all over this world where there is war and unrest of one sort or the other. As much as we hate to admit, there is a war in America from our streets to the ballot box in America. There are forgotten places and forgotten people. We must open our hearts and minds to pray and help everyone (and I mean everyone, great and small) live together in peace and harmony.

Yes, this is my choice for a FB post this Sunday. I live in Burkina Faso, where we currently have almost 2 million people who are displaced because of jihadism and terrorism. We along with Mali, Niger, and Nigeria have been mostly forgotten by the rest of world. So the words of this song are particular touching for me as the prayer is "a song of peace for their land and mine."

Yes this the ethereal theme song in the middle of Sibelius's nationalistic orchestral piece "Finlandia" It was later used as a hymn with various lyrics added to the melody in weslyan methodist and baptist hymns. As a child I first heard it as a hymn called "Be still my soul". Stunningly beautiful nationalistic folk tune written for nationalist purposes during the 1800's or so I believe. The orchestrsl version emerges from the horns and wild drumming representing warfare, in a moment of beautiful peace, I suppose representing the achievements of a bold nationalistic war that eventually yields a moment of peace and beauty. I'm in my seventies and the song brings tears to my eyes from the sheer pure beauty of the melody.

Finlandia is not a hymn. I believe Sibelius himself called it a symphonic poem. Please also watch this: th-cam.com/video/fE0RbPsC9uE/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=BBCMusic. It was composed at a time when Finland was not independent but under the tyranny of Russia and and patriotism was starting to raise its head. Finlandia became very important to that movement. The world saw the results on December 6, 1917.

Thank you for this impressive interpretation. I got to know this song while being on an exciting journey with Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his famous hymn “By Gentle (Gracious) Powers”. This hymn reaches the ends of the earth with its timeless message of strong faith and confidence, even in the darkest night.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer's goal was this peace that "This is my Song" speaks of, and he lost his life because he could not remain silent in Nazi Germany.
Did you know that his hymn has different melodies? On my TH-cam channel I present them step by step: the serious church melodies from Germany, my own new one and others that I get to know. I don't want to bore you with details here, just check out the special playlist on my channel: th-cam.com/play/PL4G_TfKePYgI6qX5gRIAuH5mINzqMqqBM.html
But the most valuable discovery of the last few days was that his famous poem fit perfectly to the melody of Finlandia (I got to know an interpretation of a lively church in Scotland. I'm sure, Dietrich Bonhoeffer knew "This is my Song" and also the other lyrics to this melody: "Be still, my Soul", and they touched his heart throughout his time in prison until the last hours of his life!
IMPORTANT: Note that there is now a complete English translation of all seven verses. I also introduce them on my channel. You can order sheet music for free via e-mail... Be blessed day by day!
