Lucky man seeing that 10-12 years because come '75 when Don left that was it. Jack Charlton was the guy to replace Revie but was he considered & would he take it.
I remember as a boy hating Leeds, but not for being dirty cheaters. Looking back at these old matches, I believe more than ever that narrative was bunk, perpetuated by mere repetition of their jealous competitors. Leeds' control and pace were both extraordinary, and had good depth into their reserves. In this match, Man U did an excellent job of frustrating a superior team. The EPL matches of today aren't worth the ticket prices, not even close.
@Martin To be honest I think two things can be true at the same time - yes they were a great team, no question, but they had some pretty rough players too.
More enjoyable than most six goal thrillers in today's Premier League... Good job by Man U to contain the mighty Leeds machine. Stepney excellent, only other player from that team of Leeds quality was Martin Buchan. Great battle between Greenhoff and Bremner.
In the days of proper football, loved this era , some great players , playing with passion and a spirit lacking in today's games....hard tackling,...muddy pitches,...and an atmosphere that was both stirring and inspiring....great times
There was some really meaty tackles from both sides but without complaint. The referee had a good game & was definitely in charge overall. Leeds were showing their new demeanor as prescribed by the great Don & Man Utd were a mish mash of desperados & the only way up was by going the only way down where a rebirth, by the Doc, would take place. Leeds, alas, hung on to many of their great players to long (the problem was that they were still great!) & eventually the edifice collapsed. Great to have these old games of real in your face wince battles. Football has to change now from this over egged gravy train. I hope Coronavirus makes the top two divisions to collapse into administrations & we get back to football basics. Its in the fans feet. Dont go until it changes.
@@johncurran7389When Leeds Played Celtic it was 8 games in 15 days with only one sub, fatigue was a major factor playing 70 plus matches always thought that Leeds team never got the luck the likes of Liverpool did they were a great side & so was Celtic at that time.
Four days later on the 26/09/73. Two players who had been opponents that day scored the goals for Scotland against Czechoslovakia at Hampden Park to ensure Scotland qualified for the West German World cup of 1974. Step forward, Jim Holton and Joe Jordan.
Three occasions when the Gelderd End would be guaranteed to buzz with excitement. 1. Lorimer lining up to take a free kick with the goal in visual range. 2. Eddie Gray on the ball taking on a defender - hopes of Burnley revisited. 3..Billy Bremner on the ball anywhere - a sense that anything cold happen.
I was a regular at Elland Rd from 1969 onwards and bought my first season ticket the season after this one 1974 Brian clough had arrived and my season ticket cost 35 quid for a seat in the North East stand!!!
The era when footy had meaning! Corporate fat cats were about but no way to the degree the modern game has permitted. its lost its magic! great upload. rose tinted glass' lovely...lol
George Buchan, never knew he came south with his brother & my surname also & at least people learned how to spell it & that includes Scotland also! Great to see this great team & a former great team & there's a lot of clickty clackty typing goin' on in background, probably Docherty typing out transfer letters & the odd love note..
Wow, What an array of talent on show on both sides. And all with household names us Brits could pronounce. Surely the sleeping giant that is the great Leeds Utd will, one day, awake from it's long slumber and shake up the establishment again! Until then, one can only look back and reminisce! C'mon Leeds, wake up!!!!
Up until this time the only footballer's name that threw me, I think, was Colin Viljoen ( or is it Viljeon ) of Ipswich. Such happy, unconfused days! Haha! I promise to shut up now! It's just the drink talking, sorry!
Interesting that 4 of these players went on to manage Leeds. Billy Bremner, Allan Clarke, Eddie Gray, George Graham. Brian Kidd was Leeds' assistant manager under David O'Leary. Brian Greenhoff moved from Scum to Leeds, Joe Jordan & Gordon McQueen went the other way across the pennines.
to say leeds destroyed man utd a year before , manutd had virtually a new team and looked a shade better leeds missed lorimer and seemed rather intimidated by jim holten i think the longer this game went man utd might have nicked it
That day before and after the match United were going through Leeds like a knife through butter, United's main firm were smashing them up on some wasteland near the ground and the Leeds fans gave up trying to fight and all ran away and ran straight into a big mob of Salford Reds who were just arriving at the ground it was carnage, all you saw was Leeds fans with bleeding noses and swollen eyes throwing their scarves away as they scattered away
Unbelievable that 43 years have passed. I was a regular at Elland Road 65-75. What a magical decade that was.

Fair play to Greenhoff for getting up (27.07) so quickly after being kicked in the face. Imagine that now!
Dean Martin singing the good times . What a time to be a leeds United fan.a glorious decade 😎

Happy days indeed and a superb side we had as well😊😊

This was United's worst team since the war, probably. A draw at Leeds was an excellent result.
Probably one of Manchester United's best performances that season seeing as they got relegated at the end of it.

Nicely said and absolutely accurate!..,,Today's game is just like any other new well marketed product, well presented, but minus any substance!..

Between 1969 and 1974, Leeds United was the best football team in British football.
And the unluckiest
SURE ABOUT THAT, DIDN'T CELTIC BEAT THEM HOME AND AWAY IN THE EUROPEAN CUP SEMI-FINAL 1970.

Just wondering can anyone explain why the Leeds pitch was so far away at one end, from the stands, always thought this strange.
At the end of that season they built the present South Stand to fill that gap.

Disagree with Barry Davies! Pity it was a draw but thoroughly enjoyed it! Brought back so many childhood memories! Thank you!

Nah didn't affect or intimate Leeds when 29 games unbeaten.
Leeds Utd just had one of those games when it didn't quite click. They went on to win the league and Man. Utd were relegated.
I don't remember that large grassy area behind the goal at Elland Road?
It was there for players coming in on you with sliding tackles, so they wouldn't hit the fence. Tackles were fast and furious back then.😜
Oh nooo, not the grassy knoll President Kennedy guy..
there would have been more injury time if fergie had been manager..a was in scratting shed that day but it lookeed different from season before...?
Never understood why brian Kidd left united for Arsenal.
Docherty?
The Doc knew he had to rebuild anew & Kidd was an irritant in the soup.
