  • This video talks about the fight for LGBT+ rights in Ireland since the 1970s.
    Content Warning Below
This video will contain the following topics, so take a second to take care of your mental health. In this video, the subject matter will touch on:
    Homophobia
    Transphobia
And related discrimination, violence, assault and murder of LGBT+ people; including mention of self-unaliving ( death by suicide), assault involving stabbing, and death by asphyxiation due to inhalation of blood,
Not graphic details, but just so you are forewarned
Criminalisation of Queer existence and anti-LGBT+ legislation, as well as anti-LGBT+ propaganda
    Conversion Therapy
    Abortion Bans
The general fight for basic human rights and bodily autonomy, against unjust laws and systems that prohibit them - including Supreme Court Justice rulings, that aren’t actually just or fair…
Thank you so much for watching - I put a lot of work into this video so I hope you like it! I know this is not a fully comprehensive overview of LGBT+ Rights, so there will be future videos on individuals coming down the line.

Go raibh maith agat for making this, and putting so much work & detail into it. Both my children are members of the LGBTQIA+ community so it warms my heart to see how much this means to you, and it would seem to many people in Ireland. We have come a long way in Canada, but similar extreme right wing ideologies are on the move here as well. It does seem to be a global issue right now. It just means that now, more than ever, people of good will need to speak out loudly in support of love, equality and justice as you have just done. Grateful! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 💜

I believe both MERJ and MASI are both against bringing in hate crime legislation.
If I recall its because in other countries it usually ends up being used to target marginalised communities rather than protect them. But I may not be remembering correctly.

I'll check out what they have to say on it, I can see the point for sure.
I know INAR have a campaign at the moment calling for hate crime legislation too. Definitely a wider discussion to be had on it.

My Irish neighbor speaks against the gays. And someone I was in the salvation army with, Mindy is an Irish lesbian. So is her dad. The staff lady said she is gonna turn him straight. Mindy spoke so repulsed of the threat. I'm like, let him be gay if he chooses.

Not really obsession, more like Christianity being used as a tool of colonisation to stamp out Gaelic and Irish culture and indigenous spirituality. Then at the founding of the state, the white Conservative men decided to write laws and constitution around Catholic Conservative issues and kept women down. But that's a story for a different day.

Sad that it takes someone to be murdered for the State to wake up. One of the men given a suspended sentence was later given 10 years for breaking into the home of a pregnant woman and raping her. I read he died recently in England but cant verify.

The person may have deleted their comments, they had an issue with the video.
      Glad you liked it!
      Edit to add:
The reason they had an issue with the video was because - according to this person - it wasn't in line with what my channel usually covers (which is Irish History and Folklore, for the record). This is Irish History. It might not be the history we're used to seeing, but that doesn't make it any less relevant.
