- Welcome to a virtual tour of Greymouth the largest town on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island the tour begins at sunrise viewed from the entrance of the Grey River looking up the Grey Valley with the mist flowing over the hills and down the Grey River then we take a walk and look at the Southern Breakwater viewing platform at the entrance to the Grey River from the Tasman Sea then a drive through the Greymouth CBD area filmed on the 25th of December 2022, the town and streets were empty due to it being Christmas day. Disclaimer this is not a promotional video for the town of Greymouth it's more of a visual record of how Greymouth looked on this day.
Greymouth is the largest town on the West Coast located next to the Grey River. Greymouth was once a busy railway and shipping town with coal being one of the primary exports that was railed in by train from local coal mines to the Greymouth port where the coal was off loaded onto ships or barges for domestic and overseas markets.
Commercial fishing, tourism and manufacturing are still key industries in the Greymouth region along with farming and logging.
Greymouth is well known for the notorious Grey River bar crossing at the mouth of the Grey River that has destroyed various ships and fishing vessels and taken the lives of many sailers over the years.
In the first scenes of this presentation you can see the famous Katabatic chilly cold damp wind flowing down the Grey River from the Grey Valley known as the Barber by the locals.
Great shots Steve. Very much the Greymouth those that live or have lived there will know. I was there that day and it was a brilliant hot sunny day. As always, when it's a nice one it's simply brilliant!

Cobden across the river from Greymouth has a nice beach, Point Elizabeth track just up from Cobden beach is a good walkway

Thank you and I highly appreciate your feedback. Greymouth is a wonderful place to live especially if you like the outdoors. Punakaiki and the Pancake Rocks are only a 50 minute drive away and there are plenty of beautiful beaches to explore along with the wilderness cycle/ walkway trail.

Cobden Hill across the River from Greymouth is a nice small lookout to look over Greymouth, Lake Brunner north of Greymouth is a nice lake, The Blowholes halfway between Greymouth and Westport are great to see, Shantytown just slightly south of Greymouth is interesting, Reefton about 1 hour north of Greymouth was the first place in New Zealand to get Electricity Going on 1st August 1888

Your most welcome the Greymouth town has changed quite a bit from when I filmed this a year ago more new buildings going up along with the drab buildings being pulled down a huge improvement for the better. Thank you for watching and all the best if you decide to move to Greymouth it truly is an amazing place to live with plenty of incredible places to explore that are within a short drive.
Why on earth would you do that? Go to the east coast any small town is better than the west coast
Hey Steve, couldn't see any sign of the old stand-alone Railway Hotel (different to the one at 16:36) that I recall staying in some 48 years ago with my father, but guessing it may have been demolished a long time ago? Cheers, Greg, NI
Hi there people I have some videos on my channel of Greymouth along with the drive north to punakaiki and the drive south to Franz Josef and Fox Glacier along with the Fox Glacier valley that is no longer accessible today due to a landslide that has completely destroyed the road and walking/cycling trail. And a few other walking trails In the region also the drive from Greymouth to Arthur’s Pass then a walk up the Temple Basion Trail.

The coast is full of amazing people and scenery just an amazing place to be at.

Good old Greymouth looks a bit different from when I was last there.
The cbd are is looking good with the Pounamu Pathway and the new Noal Leemings building nearing completion.

Its Christmas morning the business were closed as most people were at home opening their presents.

The video was shot quite early on Christmas day morning no shops were open and most people were probably still in bed.

Hope this movie not costs anything. Very dark movie only clouds and fog. Greymouth is not on the polar circle from the Antarctic like half Year darkness. Greymouth is a very Sunny Town, wonderful steady climate and in parts a little Rain for the wonderful Rainforest here on the Westcoast. The creator from this movie must have a very bad mood to made a movie like this.
Appreciate your feed back sir. This is not any form of promotional work for Greymouth and your absolutely right Greymouth is a nice in a bright sunny day. However I wanted to capture the Barber as you call it the mist/fog The Barber is unique to Greymouth. And I was only in town in the morning so it is what it is and I hate filming people in public as some people don't like being filmed or on camera so that's another reason why I shot this video in the early hours of the morning. Have a great day.

@steveruss8369 yes Steve. Barber is unique. Apparently another 5 places in the world that have the barber. I think Scotland is one of the places. Don't know the others. Japan maybe ??
