I would like to say thank you so very much for this instructional video! I have been very stressed and overwhelmed lately in trying to treat my chinchilla's hairball, and syringe feeding him hasn't been the easiest task, to say the least. So this video has been my saving grace and immensely helped me in successfully feeding him. In case this helps anyone else, I would like to note that for my particular chinchilla, I find that inserting the syringe and keeping it in his mouth for a second until he starts chewing the dispensed food has prevented him from spitting it out. Thanks again for this video, it has truly been a huge help for me!
I have never been able to syringe feed my chinchilla and trying this technique worked! He took the whole syringe and I have never been happier. Thank you so much
I found it’s best to use a small 1.0mL syringe. I cut the end off so there is no end section of smaller diameter. I make sure there are no burrs. I file it smooth and then use a flame to very quickly melt the plastic. This makes it very smooth. Once this is done the food supplement is easily expelled from the syringe. Also the small diameter allows easy entry into the side of the mouth. I inject .5 mL at a time. So to give a 10 mL meal you’ll fill the syringe 10 times and inject it 20 times (.05 mL x 20 = 10 mL) Go slow and allow your chin to chew between injections. Once I started using the wrap technique shown in this video with 1.0 mL syringe feeding became easy and clean and most importantly less traumatic for my chin!
It’s so hard :( the meds got all over my chubbies chin fur and its matted down now and they won’t take the critical care but the meds I can get in but they won’t eat!
I'm so sorry I didn't see this comment before! I've been known to go around to people's houses or get them to bring chins here so I can do it for them- there's a knack to it. Where are you?
Stick with it! I have one on baytril at the moment and he's eating ok but getting meds into him... He really fights me, never known one like him! Kicking, wriggling, pushing the syringe out of the way with his little furry hands! LOL! Three more dose and we're done!
Hi Bear, I'm sorry I didn't see this before- please check our FaceBook page for quick DM. This video was done for a friend's chinchillas and they DID recover- she is very diligent. It's just perseverance really, and weighing every day. With malo, there's no cure but depending on the age, you can manage it effectively.
@@kristingloomis2533 - has the vet given you anything to dissolve the hairball? If you'd like to talk to me on facebook then I can respond much quicker- facebook.com/littlefluffycrowdschinchillas
i have a chinchilla with malo and i’ve been visiting the vet so that he can get his teeth trimmed. i noticed that my chinchilla stoped eating hay :( i tried two different types of oxbow hay and hes just not interested. i don’t know what to do :/
Have you ever had small pets select? It is fresh and delicious to them Also the vet should have given you pain meds so they can eat with less pain. If they are eating pellets though, thats really good.

Brilliant! Makes it worthwhile putting them up, lol. Wishing your chin better asap!

does this hurt them?

There is no cure for malo. As the roots are elongated and trimming the outer parts of the teeth won't resolve that. :/
