Just have to point out, you’re the person I always watch first on yt and I aways look forward for your videos, you don’t read only the popular books, you value books that are ‘old’ and don’t just follow trends, you speak honestly and I respect that more than anything. Really wish there were more similar to you. I didn’t notice you ever mention some kind of sponsor, maybe you just don’t want to have them but if anything, your audience, which is pretty mature I’m guessing, would be really happy if you also made some money from these videos, you put in a lot of work and you deserve it. Also, more books hehe, lots of love from Serbia

Of the books you mentioned, I would most strongly recommend The Lies of Locke Lamora. Of those you didn't mention, but had turned out in the TBR orientation, Senlin Ascends. Have fun climbing Mt TBR!

The Nightingale was a bit out of my comfort zone but after reading it I literally think about it all the time. I am in love with this story! You get to know the characters so well while still trying to keep up with the fast plot. A little romance/love interest that adds an extra element (don't worry it isnt a full on romance). Yes...i love that book

  • @Aiyume7

The Rithmatist is heaps better than The Reckoners. Alcatraz has a sort-of-unlikeable protagonist, but it's actually great. And Reckoners book two was wonderful :D
edit: and if I may fangirl about some of the bottom fantasy shelf authors - Pratchett, Nix, Stroud, Pierce, and Kay are some of the best in the genre. Nix, Stroud, Pierce and middle-grade / YA, but are downright amazing. Kay's Tigana brought me to tears every time I read it. I don't remember if you liked Gaiman or not, but read American Gods before Anansi Boys if you haven't yet. And Anne Rice is practically a classic author by now, and writes amazing vampire novels. This is The Witching Hour tho, and I haven't read that yet XD
I hope you like at least some of these, because they are my faves

    • @kirihara120
      @kirihara120 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hayyelle yeah, I agree about the Rithmatist. Even though Sanderson is probably the most recommended fantasy author currently, I think The Rithmatist is his most underrated story.

  • @wecomeoutandplay

I recommend The Last Wish (the first book of the Witcher series). It's a collection of short stories and is fun/easy to read!
The Black Company was horribly paced. All of the action happens off screen (or is it off page?) and it's basically just the characters reacting to stuff that happened. This is the gist of it:
    "Woah that battle was crazy!"
1 paragraph later "Woah that second battle was wild!"
2 paragraphs later "Wow that third battle was insane!"
And you never see the battles :'(
The Age of Myth (on your second shelf), I couldn't get past the first 100 pages. Not bad, but nothing really good, just found myself bored.
You have to read The Eye of the World! It's such a classic and a great introduction to The Wheel of Time. This book itself is reminiscent of the Lord of the Rings, but it has to be put into context that at the time it was published those were the only types of books that would be published in the fantasy series. The magic system is unique, and the characters are interesting.
The Shadow of the Wind is so wonderful. The prose is beautiful and you find yourself immersed in Spain during the post-war era
The Great Gatsby is always a classic book that is easy to digest and sumptuous to read
The Left Hand of Darkness is great!
You have to read The Shining, especially given the quarantine! It's my second favorite King book, after It. Pet Sematary is also great, probably the most bleak of his books
Gone Girl is a modern classic, and even if you've seen the film you can't put it down!
The Haunting of Hill House is good. Interesting, but a little tiresome. If you want to get a short book read for your Goodreads challenge, that's a good one.
Sorry this was a lot, but you have a lot of books that are so good!

I've been looking forward for you to read The Stormlight Archive (Way of Kings) forever, I think you'll really like it! And I loved the Rithmatist so I would recomment that too. Unkindness of Magicians is really good and I think more adult than ya. Also I've been reading the wheel of time for years and really enjoying it, but it takes time as it's too damn long and also so good but it is definitely not for everyone so I'm not sure if you would like it or not. Name of the Wind is also amazing btw, I thought you had already read it though ^^

Your love for the library and audiobooks motivated me to get a library card, and I love it! English is not my first language, so audiobooks were kinda hard for me because I had to be highly concentrated to understand the story, but the more I've been listening to, the easier it has become. I've been tackling my physical tbr with audiobooks from the library, thanks for your enthusiasm 💖

I spotted you have Sabriel! I really truly would recommend that series. It has excellent characters, it's so compelling, there's a truly incredible library in the second book, and the original three are one of favourite series ever. The first chapter isn't especially gripping, but it's interesting from a world building perspective, and it grows so much from there. I hope you get to it at some point!

Hi, Emily. I really liked The Lies of Locke Lamora, but it can be slow moving. Not a bad thing, but that’s the kind of thing I like knowing up front.
I love, love the Joe Abercrombie trilogy, The First Law. I think it is a series that many readers of young adult fantasy don’t enjoy. It is gritty and brutal with morally gray characters, but I also found it darkly humorous. The books are really well paced in my opinion.
The Sparrow is also one of my all time favorites, just to give you an idea of a book we both love.
The Old Man’s War series by John Scalzi is a fast paced, fun read. I think you would like it.
Ursula K. Le Guin is my favorite author. She was a beautiful writer and her stories are so profoundly human, so humane. The beginning of The Left Hand of Darkness puts some people off, but if you pick up this book, persevere and you will be richly rewarded. Some classics don’t stand the test of time, this book does. I have read most of her scientific fiction, and although I haven’t loved everything by her, it has definitely cemented her as a legend in the field, surpassing most, if not all, her male counterparts, in my opinion. I’ll stop raving now.

I love this series so much. Daleina in particular is incredible. That bit near the start of the first book she was like "I like Merecot" and people were like "she's kinda bitchy" and then Daleina goes "yeah... I still like her". My fucking favourite.
Also how she deals with conflict so pragmatically is my most favourite thing. I know a lot og people prefer the second main character which I really do get but I'm always going to be more interested in someone who has to find ways to compensate for their weaknesses compared to someone who doesn't particularly have any.

so it's been a while since I've read the completed Sabriel series, but that ending in the trilogy (now with a fourth actually) broke my heart, it is solo worth the 3 book read, and Sabriel itself is really worth it. I read it when I was young and I still find the magic system quite unique.

Three parts dead is weird in a good way. Story is ok, but you mostly read it because the world is so unique - I mean corporate necromancy? Come on. Story is self-contained in book one enough so that you don't feel compelled to read the whole cycle.
Lies of Locke Lamora is one of the best books I've read, even though it has a very mediocre first chapter or so. Plow through it and you won't regret it.
Colour of magic was fun for me, but is agreed among fans as not the book to start with, because of just how good Going Postal is.
Cat's Cradle is great, but Sirens of Titans is even better imho.
Last Wish is allright, Sword of Destiny is better, but they're mostly short story collection entry into great novel series.
I'm jealous about bookshelf, but also, we have overlapping tbr. High five!

11:23 Conceptually Blindsight is totally hard(core) sci-fi to it's bones and seems to be a love it or hate it affair. I'm in the former camp, it's one of my absolute favourite sci-fis along with Simmon's Hyperion and Wolfe's Book of the New Sun which I see (at least vol 1) are also on your shelves. They're the three books (series) in your whole collection I'm most eager on hearing your thoughts on (if/when you ever get around to them) more than even the long-awaited Children of Ruin!
Thanks for this vid, always great entertainment, especially during this lock down. Hope you're staying safe!

I have Hyperion on my shelf and have a feeling that I will really appreciate it, but also that it will take an emotional toll, so I keep putting it off.
I read the first book in Wolfe’s series and didn’t get into it, but I’ve been thinking of trying again.

    • @purplepothos5794
      @purplepothos5794 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@aliciacampos5789 Hyperion is a book that I think a lot of people will easily get into (compared to Wolfe's work), the way the narrative is structured will offer something for everyone so will indeed likely give you some emotional feels (or even chills) at one point or another. If you ever do get around to it don't forget the sequel Fall of Hyperion if you don't know about it already, it's literally one book cut into two parts so is absolutely indispensable to concluding the story.
Definitely can agree Wolfe's work is not easy to get into, the surface-level narrative can come across rather pedestrian and uneventful, but it's a book that I find excels outside that surface-level narrative; it's quite heavily layered and thematically allusory but as a result if you're not interested in the story or style of 'flowery' prose (as I heard it being described as once) it definitely comes across as boring, pretentious and impenetrable. If you didn't get into the story before I'd suggest perhaps in your future attempt to keep in mind that it's not an epic or grand adventure like other fantasies, definitely more about the journey than the destination.

It’s down on your meh shelf, but I really hope you’ll give the Seven Realms series a shot. It’s my favorite young adult fantasy I’ve read, and you tend to have pretty similar taste in fantasy to mine. Great characters, real stakes, and non-annoying romance. 👍 Also, I liked the Rithmatist way, way more than Steelheart. It reads a little younger, kinda like middle grade, but not in a silly way. The only downside is the big question mark about when the sequel will be published.

I feel like I have a massive comment coming so I'm gonna break it down into shelves 😅
Shelf 1: definitely most excited for you to read Kings of the Wyld but it does have a very specific humour so it can be hit or miss. It was one of my favourites of last year. Least excited for the Mark Lawrence books. I dnfed Prince of Thorns even though I really liked the Book of the Ancestor series :(
Shelf 2: looks amazing. There's a lot on here that I really like. Red Seas Under Red Skies is my fav Locke Lemora book so far. The Goblin Emperor deserves the world, someone needs to hug Maya please and thank you. It's so good I actually remembered the main character's name! Magic of Blood and Sea is fun semi piratey adventurey YA. The Traitor Baru Cormoront was not my fav reading experience but it's stuck with me for several years now. And I'm very curious about the Craft Sequence by Max Gladstone which are currently high up on my tbr.
Shelf 3: I'm sure someone else has already said it but please do read Edgedancer from Arcanum Unbounded before reading Oathbringer. In AU the short stories each have a little piece to say what is required reading before going into them. I really like this collection, especially the stories that are not directly connected to known Cosmere stories. I think my favourite is probably the Emperor's Soul or maybe Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell. But the Steelheart series is just not worth continuing. Apparently the other YA stuff is better though.
Shelf 4: nothing to add except Jemisin is incredible.
Shelf 5: maybe my favourite shelf so far. I do love the Tearling trilogy including the last book which is very polarizing (although it worked really well for me) but I get what you mean about not wanting to start new series. One day! I see that you read The Thief by MWT. After reading the first book I didn't pick up the second for over a year even though I owned the first four. I thought the first book was just fine but that it felt very young and not for me. Then I read the second book and it blew me away. The narrative from the second book on is in third person instead of first. It definitely feels more like a YA/adult crossover book. It's much much more complex than the first book and once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. As someone who barely ever rereads, I've reread books 2 and 3 twice each since I first read them this time last year. Queen of Attolia was definitely the most surprising book of last year for me. Oh gosh and the Witchlands series by Susan Dennard just gets better and better. Bloodwitch in particular was brilliant. There's so much going on behind the scenes that every book makes me feel like I need to reread the last to see what I was missing. As for King of Scars, go in with lowish expectations and you'll be fine.
Shelf 6: I definitely didn't see any in the potential unhaul area that I think you need to keep. Queen of Blood has one of my favourite female protagonists of all time, is full of female friendship, is very sex positive, has the most beautiful world building, and really delivers on the promise it makes to the readers in the first chapter. Graceling is worth a read and actually holds up considering when it was written. No love triangles here thank you! And I love Tamora Pierce but I also grew up on her so I'm not sure what it would be like to read her books now. Although again, brilliant protagonists, very sex positive, and good discussion of periods and things which I'm forever surprised she got away with considering when the books were written.
    Skipping HP shelf :P
Challenge shelf: obviously has some great books. Recently read A Memory Called Empire and it was a solid debut with a super interesting world. I read it on audio which I would highly recommend, particularly because I could not for the life of me figure out how to pronounce the names. I think I gave it a 4.5 and I'm really looking forward to everything else this author writes. Those Sanderson books are great obviously. My favourite era 2 character, Steris, really steals the show in BoM. And I love the way Sebastian de Castell writes. Honestly at this point reading one of his books feels a bit like coming home (oh you're starting the book with a dueling sequence? Who would have thought?! Let me read this book in one sitting!). I do need to say though that the Greatcoats series in particular is very dark and there is some messy stuff in there. He's grown a lot as an author for sure.
Rainbow Shelf: yes To Be Taught if Fortunate was excellent. I will read anything she ever writes. I also loved How to Lose the Time War. I think the trick is to not try too hard to understand what's happening and instead just let the book tell the story it's trying to tell. It'll sort of make sense eventually, or it won't, and that's perfectly okay. Five stars.
Shelf number ?: the Messenger by Markus Zusak is nominally my favourite book of all time but!!! I haven't read it in over five years. It was very formative when I read it. I would describe it as being a book about giving a shit about the people around you. It also has my all time favourite first chapter. Of course I also love the Book Thief. I went to my first ever signing last year and he signed my copy of the Messenger with a little pawprint from the doggo called the Doorman and it says "love from the Doorman and me" 😭❤😭
Classics Shelf: I also haven't read many classics but I have read most Austen. Persuasion is my favourite because it's a very quiet book where most of what's going on is found in the subtext. Someone jokingly said to me recently that I was saying it was my favourite to be edgy 😂 . Nah I just love the pining. Little Women is still fantastic. I grew up with it as a favourite and then re-read it after watching the film. It was a totally different experience. I appreciate every character so much more now that I can separate myself from Jo. Amy in particularly is a new favourite, Florence Pugh's acting was just excellent and helped me see her in a totally different light. There are a bunch of great audio versions out there too.
Nonfiction Shelf: I haven't read anything except Notes on a Nervous Planet which was very good.
And that's actually it for me because I haven't read any of your unread books on the entire third or fourth bookshelves 😬
