3-5-2 is absolutely the way to go. Barella needs to drop back with Rovella/Ricci and Tonali. Bring Frattesi off the bench. It was a decent attempt to try something out. It didn't work. We are looking much better and have ironed out some consistent starting positions and formation. Time to keep building. Working on set pieces and finding another striker. Rovella was excellent when he came on and was the reason we were able to actually hold possession. He was constantly open, made smart passes and did combat for the ball. He and Ricci will battle for the starting role.
@@w1572wI would also consider Orsolini as another second striker option (could be lethal with his speed). I think Frattesi probably would work better as the second striker and Barella dropped in to the midfield 3. Agree that Ricci and Rovella are looking as the best CDM options. I wouldn’t completely rule out Locatelli from playing in the future though.
Overall good campaign but yesterday was pitiful. We’ve really seen how much trouble we’re in if Donnarumma doesn’t play. I feel bad bc I used to really like Vicario and Meret. That said, they gotta go. There’s a lot of elite goalkeepers in Italy such as DeGregorio, Perin, and Carnesecchi. I can’t believe how we capitulated and how easily we concede. All they had to do was not lose by more than one goal at home 🤦♂️. Now we’ll prob get Germany or Spain instead of Serbia… what the actual fuck. Also, idk how I feel about Buongiorno. He’s great in serie A, but has not even remotely convinced me for the national team. Despite all of this, there’s a lot to be excited about. Most of the time we looked unplayable during the group stage, minus the last game of course. Edit: I wrote all of this before hearing the podcast. Glad to see we’re on the same page in general, esp with the goalie situation 😂
Lack of rotation inbetween games is also a big issue! Look at France V Israel lineup; completely different starting players for France to the Italy game, so the team was more fresh for Italy game given the rotations. Whereas Spalletti only changed 2 players (and 1 change was forced with Donnarumma getting a stomach bug). The games were only 3 days apart. Spalletti should realise that you can’t play almost the exact same lineup a few days apart (club coaches often make this same mistake not rotating enough in between league matches and champions league). Modern football: rotation is key. For the France game I think Retegui and Frattesi should have been rested, and Kean + Maldini or Raspadori should have started (with Barella dropping back into the midfield 3). Whether we use 3-5-1-1, or 3-5-2, both are good for Italy IMO, but we need to ensure the team is rotated more if there are games just 3 days apart against tough opponents.
we saw why locatelli was no longer called up (and I think it will be his last game). Frattesi is a useless player when there is a need to defend, create play etc... of course Inzaghi never lets him play. France is a much more physical team but Donnarumma and Vicario are useless on corner kicks, every time I fear conceding a goal. However, there was a lack of quality in Ricci and calafiori to come out better with the ball.
Italy's poor show towards the end of qualifying rounds since last 8 yrs is making me nervous again. We lost the group 1st pos on the last day. 🤞wc qualifiers. Last hurdle hiccups would cost us again. Italy needs their strikers to score, we cant have midfielders to score in every match.
@@emanuelenicolo6131 Yeah, he deserves more minutes, especially because Retegui looks a bit exhausted, but he seems very motivated. He would probably score twice vs Como.
As a non-Italian who has followed Italian sportsmen and women for the last three decades, its clear Italians lack the ability to build and sustain sporting success. Whenever they succeed or seem to be succeeding, they suddenly become too complacent and specularly collapse. In football alone, I have witnessed AC Milan 2005 UCL final, AC Milan giving away a 4-1 win vs Deportivo in 2004, the 2000 Euro final collapse, 2006 World Cup win followed by 2010 collapse, 2020 Euros win followed by almost total collapse, inexplicably losing all the UEFA club finals of 2023. This Nations League campaign was becoming too good and UnItalian. Surely, they were never going to conclude it flawlessly without inexplicably collapsing at some point. Its like they celebrate too much when success comes and totally lose it. In other sports, Filipo Gana can no longer win a World title after appearing like he was going to dominate for ages, Pecca Bagnaia suddenly started crashing after two titles, Elisa Balsamo won one world title and suddenly can nolonger beat Wiebes or Kopecky The only Italian sportsperson to achieve sustained successs in my lifetime was Valentino Rossi and may be Paolo Bettini. Now all eyes on the tennis guy Sinner. I am worried after a couple of grand slams, he could just collapse.
I think you better look at the history of Italian Football and the reasons that things have changed in the 20-25 years , and also the socio-economic,migration situation in Italy and the rest of Europe.
I do feel the San Siro is unlucky / 'curse' venue for the Italy national team. Other than the Ukraine victory in 2023 - the previous victory in that stadium was back in 2012 against Denmark.
If they draw Germany or Portugal, it will be 10 - 2. Over two legs they will score two but concede 6 from corners and and 4 from free kicks. Never seen a team be this bad at the basics of defending.
Why u keep calling Mancini for defense he is terrible and he was shit vs north Macedonia playoff and switzerland in euro. Him and cristante have finished with italy national team and Spalletti already showed in these last 3 call ups
Buongiorno doesn't seem good in the air or positional for me. Also Locatelli and Barella were off it, Locatelli was really poor, lazy fouls, poor passing. Barella maybe in the wrong position! Set Pieces were a nightmare, I had to look away, sometimes I knew it would be a go so checked my app and it was 3-1 before I'd even seen the goal, because it was obvious!!
I'm not you can call this crumble , did Chou watch the game , or just the high lights ? 3 goals on 3 set pieces you call that what? Domination ? , please , and we stlll almost pulled it off at the end, , France along with Argentina and few other teams are more protected you know look what look the other way on clear fouls injury time amount is managed according to whom ever is leading , in Paris the gave France more time even though they had no chance of scoring 2 goal , at San Siro with Italy only needing 1 goal the allowed 4 minutes , but I already knew that before they put number of minutes , same amount of goals pretty much same substitution numbers Nice Job EUFA AND FIFA

Agree on the midfield combo. Bove for the 6th midfield off the bench option. Baldanzi, gnoto, should be tried as options for behind the striker role.
@w1572w completely agree on all of this.
