    I've had my guitalele for 3 years now, finally some one teaching it, thanks so much!
    Even on the internet, no one is teaching this instrument

    As a recent guitarlele convert, what I appreciate most is the ability to play in the same keys as guitar while the different voicings and shapes for the same chords enable me to approach pieces in new ways.

    put a capo on a guitar at the 5th fret and yo have a Guitarlele or use the 4 bottom strings and you have a ukulele

    I have heard about the guitarlele but now that you are sharing some info on it - I am starting to really think about it....I wish I had seen this before I bought my guitar. I am self teaching myself to play the guitar but it’s hard cuz I have little fingers. That’s why I play the uke. My hubby may not appreciate me getting another instrument....please keep sharing videos about this instrument. 😁

      Thank you for the comment, so nice to hear from you. Yes the ukulele is a great instrument, as well is the guitar, I love them both. The guitarlele is nice because the body isn't as big as an acoustic guitar (even a mini-guitar) which is easier to handle and play even with smaller hands.

    I love this! I just got a guitalele, which I bought not knowing about tuning it up a fourth. So, I was a bit disappointed in it when I first played it in E tuning. After doing a bit of research, I realized guitaleles are tuned up a 4th. At first, I was disappointed because I bought it as a traveling guitar. But, having also started playing Ukulele, I realized tuned up a 4th, it transferred perfectly to Ukulele chords. I just needed to figure out the 6th and 5th strings, which you gave me in your chord chart. Now, I’m loving playing it, and am so glad and excited to find this series of guitalele lessons. Can’t wait to watch (and play) more! Thanks, Terry!

    I play strictly tabs and so it doesn't matter if the guitarlele is tuned higher than a regular guitar. Since I like Chet Atkins stuff the shorter neck is enticing, even though I have long fingers. Chet was all over the fretboard and a shorter neck is of great help to match his reach. I have a 4-String uke now and am considering getting one of these.

  • @cmcapps1963
    @cmcapps1963 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a guitarist I find it easiest to think of it as a guitar capoed on the fifth fret in terms of tuning. To be honest, though, I'm a guitarist through and through (my Martin dreadnought steel string is my "desert island guitar") and I sing as well so I have to transpose chords and riffs to keep songs in comfortable keys. My interest in the instrument comes from having to travel and spending a lot of time in hospitals where I want my guitar but need something much smaller and quieter. I think the guitalele is less frustrating to a ukulele player who simply gets two extra strings. I go back and forth over whether it would "better than nothing" for me personally.

  • @morennamia
    @morennamia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So you got my full attention. I used to be a studio musician and the depression hit me... 10 years after I haven't played music at all and discovered I need it to live. Point is, I can't play my guitar anymore, and it is terribly frustrating. I found you while looking for lighter, smaller alternatives and i strongly believe this is it.... so now... which guitarlele would you recommend ? I don't want anything pro, but i honestly don't want to get anything that sounds (cheap?) SOS

    Hi Terry. What a wonderful video and instrument, TY. I 've been playing around with a guitar and a tiple Colombiano for a while, but I,ve been looking for smth portable. I wonder what's your opinion about a guitalele tuned like a traditional guitar (EADGBe) i heard we need high tension strings, right? Is this a good idea?

    Great lesson. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I just subscribed and rang the bell. I am a beginner guitar player. And I was just gifted a 26" total length 6-string banjo. Not even sure what to call it. A mini banjo? A guitarlele banjo maybe? Or a guitar banjolele? Or a banjitar ukulele? Bottom line is it really doesn't matter what I call it. I just used it with your lesson, and it worked out great. Thanks again.

      @@Ukelikethepros I bought an Andoer off of Amazon. It has a pickup unlike the Yamaha GL1 and it's not as expensive as some of the other models, fitting into my price range. I'm a little worried about it not having a trussrod though...

    • @Ukelikethepros
      @Ukelikethepros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lasukie Cool, I'm not familiar with the Andoer, it's not coming up on my Amazon. Where do you live? Many of them don't have truss rods, even my KoAloha guitarlele doesn't have a truss rod. Hopefully the neck is straight and you won't need to do any adjustments. Would love to see it once you get it.

    • @Lasukie
      @Lasukie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ukelikethepros This link should have it: www.amazon.com/Andoer-Guitarlele-Rosewood-Fretboard-Instrument/dp/B01M0LZGEW
      I took a terrible phone picture here: imgur.com/9ohvXCl
      I bought it from Amazon Canada. Because of the climate I like to have the option of a truss rod since I can't really afford a climate controlled room for my instruments. I've been a bass player almost exclusively for the last seven years (and recently also bought a UK Dream U-Bass also, a chinese make) and wanted to get back into guitar playing but also have something really portable and man am I out of practice! I can't even pick anymore and I don't have great nails (don't need nails for fingerpicking bass...might need to purchase some fingerpicks) and the last time I played guitar it was on a full size! What a culture shock this little bad boy is!
      For some reason my Guitalele wouldn't like A tuning (the E string wanted to hang around B and just wouldn't go to E no matter how much I tried to coax it...) so I've tuned it to E until I can get some new strings (what would you recommend?), I think the ones on it are pretty shot. For 200$ CAD what to expect, really ^^; The pickup works well the neck is straight and the action is good, so there's no worries there.

    • @Ukelikethepros
      @Ukelikethepros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, thanks for sharing. It is currently unavailable on Amazon here in the states. I have seen photos of those before. Your right for $200 and a picktup it's pretty good. For strings you can use regular classical guitar strings (light or medium tension), I use D'Addario. There are some companies making guitarlele strings, I think D'Addario makes a set of Flourocarbon and also Cordoba has a set as well. I have only used classical guitar strings on mine. Thanks for sharing.

    • @Ukelikethepros
      @Ukelikethepros  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question and I have a video coming out on this. Many ukulele companies and even google like the spelling guitalele. Even the way you pronounce this varys from video to video. Other companies, like KoAloha Ukuleles call it a guitarlele, even though they are the same exact instrument. I have also seen it spelled, guilele. I prefer guitarlele because it's easier to say and seems clear in what it is, a cross between a ukulele and guitar.

  • @melhigson

    Surely you could keep the same chord shapes of a guitar and play the tune in a different key on the guitarlele.

    • @Ukelikethepros
      @Ukelikethepros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are correct. The biggest challenge is just remembering the chords in the new key. If you have played guitar for a while like I have, I still forget that I'm playing guitarlele and will call the chords by their guitar name.

    Informative video - thanks. Please change title to the correct name of the instrument - it's a Guitalele - no r in the name. Ukulele is not pronounced ook ah lay lee, it's you kuh lay lee. The tuning of the top four strings is the same intervals as a baritone ukulele, not soprano or tenor ukulele - these are tuned to the melody "my dog has fleas" 5 1 3 6 - where 1 is the tonic of the scale - G C E A if tuned to the key of C from low to high string. Baritone uke is like the top four strings of guitar tuning intervals, up a forth. A four note up the major scale - Doh ray me fah from a regular guitar. I had access to a baritone guitar that my first girlfriend owned - just like playing the top 4 strings of a normal guitar.

      I hunted down the brand, and I quickly learned that this is the good stuff. Too rich for my for my budget right now, but the sound on that thing is outstanding.

    can it be tuned like a guitar?

    • @Ukelikethepros
      @Ukelikethepros  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’ve heard of people tuning it like a guitar but have been disappointed with how it sounds. I think that has to do with the tension, as guitar tuning will have less tension than guitalele tuning.

      @@BuzzyWhitlowIndy depends on the strings. If you get a shorter scale set, it can be done. Hannabach set 890 MT would work.

      @@Ukelikethepros Maybe high tension nylon strings? But I'd expect the low E string to be a bit dull because the box is too small.

      @@Ukelikethepros Hi, the guy who sold me mine recommended tuning it in GCFA#DG, tends to work fine while fingerpicking, I have some videos on my channel you could check out, I've just started using it instead of a guitar (because of the size, more convenient to have in the car😉), feel free to leave a comment, it's always good to have some criticism...
      Otherwise great video Mr!

  • @5877user

    This sounds like a biased sales pitch. Not a single negative comment. Do you wind up playing it like a guitar bc it has 6 strings? Doesn’t sound like it’s for a beginner.

    • @Ukelikethepros
      @Ukelikethepros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not so much a sale pitch but this video was part of the pre-launch to my Guitarlele Course that came out last month (www.ukelikethepros.com/p/guitarlele-course). Essentially you can play it like a guitar, although it's tuned a 4th up from the guitar. Also the ukulele size body and neck length makes it feel more like a ukulele with a wider neck. But all your guitar chords and scales work, they are just in a different key than the guitar. I have a total beginner (never played ukulele or guitar) that is going through my course right now and loving it.

  • @BuzzyWhitlowIndy

    The neck appears to be wide like a classical guitar.

    • @Ukelikethepros
      @Ukelikethepros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Essentially yes, but I have noticed that it is not anywhere near as thick as the classical guitar neck, and also if it not obvious, not as long.

    • @Ukelikethepros
      @Ukelikethepros  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point, I know that many companies like Yamaha call it a guitalele. The company I use, KoAloha calls it a Guitarlele. I also find it easier to pronounce. I have also seen it called a guitele.

    • @matthallam7772
      @matthallam7772 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, so it’s the manufacturers that are confusing the issue. I saw a earlier Video of yours and you used guitalele ,lol. I guess in the big picture it does not matter.I am thinking of getting one. I have been playing ukulele about 6 years,I’ve Learnt a lot. Don’t really know if learning a whole new set of chord is good right now. Can you use ukulele chords?

    • @Ukelikethepros
      @Ukelikethepros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes let's blame the manufacturers. 😀Yes you can use your ukulele chords for the guitarlele and then over time start incorporating the chord shapes to take advantage of the 2 extra strings.

    • @theopask8032

      Re the last comment is it better to strum the 6 strings or 4 when playing the Uke chords to get a better depth of sound while continually trying incorporate the New chord shapes as per your chord chart
      Many thanks for your continued help. Cheers

    • @Ukelikethepros
      @Ukelikethepros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theopask8032 good follow up. When playing your ukulele chords on the guitarlele I would avoid the 5th and 6th strings until you get the full guitarlele chords since those 2 new strings D and A won't always sound good when played.
