This is Indigenous Australian gospel. Dr G. is singing of his country. Aboriginal people are of their land - spiritually and physically one. Dr G. was singing of his heart and home, his heaven and Earth. His truth is so beautiful and pure that it is only fitting that he gave it voice in the language of his place. It is something most of us will never be blessed to understand and yet cannot help be viscerally in awe of.
That’s for explaining this I don’t understand the words but the emotion in his voice comes across. Felt genuinely sad listening to this. And delta as always was flawless and did a great job showcasing Dr G’s part. Amazing
Makes me cry everytime. I can hear 60 000 years of first Australians living on country. Thank you for your positive comments on Delta, she gets some flak in Australia but that girl can sing! ☮️
Yes, this makes me cry too. Oh what we white Australians lost when we drove our indigenous people from their land. I only hope that we can look to a future where we can truly share the beauty and fruits of our country and then it will be everyone’s Dreamtime.
I have been known to listen to Gurrumul while driving long distance through our magnificent land and have to pull over because I can't see through the tears. Every Australian who loves this land is moved by his songs whether they understand the language or not. Because his Spirit is in the music. The Spirit of this land, home to us all.
"Bayini" are light-skinned mythological beings. In literature, the first non-Aboriginal visitors to the Arnhem Land coast are referred to as Bayini. In songs that record and preserve their traditions, Aboriginal people of Arnhem land tell of the Bayini gypsies with copper coloured skin who visited their shores. Yolngu are deep thinking people. The words in the song refer to many families sitting together on the beach looking to waves and sea, the horizon, contemplating. "Long ago from over the horizon the Bayini came to Yolngu country."
The peoples of what is now eastern Indonesia , from Sulawesi, and elsewhere, had a depth of interaction with the peoples of the Top End that we shall probably never know enough about. But it was prolonged and deep. There is evidence that Islam was successfully implanted in various areas, and, then, immediately extirpated by the British.
This is probably the most moving and beautiful duet Delta Goodrem AM has ever done. It gives me shivers down my spine and goosebumps all over my body. No other Australian has represented the aboriginal people in Australia like she did with this duet.
Such a touching duet... RIP Gurrumul 😢 .. And I don't care what people say about Delta... Imo, she's the #1 female vocalist in Australia of the modern era. Beauty and talent personified.
Thank you so much for reacting to our brother Gurrumul, no other reactors do and he is an Australian national treasure, we adore our boy from the north. I'm a full on metalhead but even the very first time I heard him I was frozen on the spot, still the only male voice that can make me cry good tears...RIP King Geoffrey. XXX
I am so happy to see how much you enjoyed this...it is MY absolute favorite performance of all time. Delta said in an interview that it was the greatest single honour of her life to be asked to sing with Gurrumul.
We as Australians are so lucky to have had these two.... we've lost Gurrumul now but fortunately we still have Delta. She has been through the mill thats for sure - a battle with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma and then vocal paralysis...she is truly a fighter. Extremely talented and we thank you for featuring yet another of our musical legends.
Well said, Jo. Delta has been vilified in the industry for so long by people who have no idea what the hell she's been through and she continues to shine. Needless to say that Gurrumul and his people have been through the mill for over 200 years. I have always believed in the philosophy of 'live and let live'. A lot of people don't seem to be party to that. It makes me very sad.
I cried when I first heard him sing and I cried when he died. You’re greatly missed Gurrumul. Two great artists singing together. It makes me proud to be an Australian ❤
Gurrumul was a one in a 7.6 billion artist! This song by Dr G and sung with Delta should be Australia's national anthem. And even as a non-indigenous Australian, I could always 'feel' the song when sung by Gurrumul in such gorgeous, soul-searching tones. I never did understand the lyrics though until I heard this duet, so thank you Delta for offering your beautiful voice and explaining what Gurrumul is singing in such a vocally aesthetic and dignified way. I'm with you brother, it makes me cry, every time I hear the emotion of it. A sadly beautiful vocalization that is filled with melancholy. Just the most beautiful song on the planet sung by gentle, beautiful people.
WoW 😭I'm Indigenous to Nth Qld in Australia... seeing my people from anywhere being recognised for their talents makes me PROUD especially that U actually feel his Spirit in song✌️ Always Awesome 🍷🖤
He probably won't understand that; you should probably explain why you say that because he's American and won't understand the cultural reasons behind why you say that.
@@supergran62 and as he has said numerous times, he can't read through thousands of lines of replies. So he says to talk on is patreon, that way he will see anything important.
Delta in the last couple of years lost her ability to speak properly after a surgery. She has a year of rehab to learn how to speak again and then had to learn how to sing again. She is an incredible Aussie singer
Very sad to lose Dr G . A special unique & ancient voice connecting spirit & land & sea. I love how Delta so skillfully matches not only her tone - but her vibrato also to his. Wonderful performance by both.
I remember watching this live on tv and I cried then and this just made me cry again. Please listen to Delta sing anything, she’s amazing. She can sing anything. Her duet with Andre Bocelli The Prayer is beautiful
Dr G was/is like a singing shaman: you can't help but be moved to tears by the sound of his voice and there is something incredibly healing about listening to him. As you said, you don't need to know what they're singing about to feel the emotion of it. Delta added a lovely flourish to this too, in her own beautiful way. That's the first time I've heard them together too, and was really moved by this performance. We're so spoiled Down Under!
This song pulls you in a way that you can feel the beat of an ancient land, and its people. Our indigenous people have been around for more than 60,000 years, with a culture that is rich and colourful. I lived in the States for nearly 20 years, and as much as I enjoyed my life there, each and every day I could feel the pull of my homeland. I am very happy to be home:) Thank you for sharing your take on this song, it is always enjoyable to watch you react:)
Thankyou for this reaction of one of my favourite performances with Delta and Gurrumul. This song always gives me goosebumps. I agree with you when you say you feel this music, his voice always sends me to another dimension
She was basically singing (the English part) as a translation.. Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu was an Aboriginal Australian musician of the Yolŋu peoples. He sang stories of his land both in Yolŋu languages such as Gaalpu, Gumatj or Djambarrpuynu, a dialect related to Gumatj, and in English. Although his solo career brought him wider acclaim, he was also formerly a member of Yothu Yindi and later of Saltwater Band.
I remember seeing this live and I’ve streamed it so many times when I feel I need to spiritually connect with my surroundings here in Australia. Soaring, haunting vocals from 2 amazing Australians 🇦🇺
You hit the nail on the head, their performance draws you in and for me brings tears to my eyes.. Cudos to Delta for learning his language and for them both singing so beautifully together. 🙏🏾 👏🏽
Wow. I must have seen this years ago because I have always watched The Voice, but I am ashamed to say I must have forgotten about it. Thank you for showing this - two of our most wonderful singers together. Dr G of course, incomparable to anyone in the world, and Delta, a truly wonderful singer in her own right, who is generous and lovely.
5:35, he’s doing the higher harmonies than she is. I always love when that happens! My God, they both have such beautiful tones and strength and clarity to their voices. Delta’s voice is so resonant, and she’s able to be breathy and somehow powerful at the same time.
Wow that was so beautiful, one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I'm aussie and didn't know Delta and Gurrumul sang together. That's probably because I have not watched TV in many years.
