I've got a 65 pan chopper and have kick and electric start and its my favorite combination. I've also got a shovelhead and an evo but they are currently electric start only and I'm going to add a kick to the shovelhead
My brother and I rode early 70’s Sportster choppers every day ( I was 21, he was 19 ). My first bike was a new 1968 B.S.A. 250 cc single cylinder kick start only with compression release lever. If you did not know the proper start procedure, that little beast was capable of firing you up in the air for a painful second.......great fun to watch ! Not to experience ! Gary in Michigan ( still riding the big bikes at 70 1/2 years old ).

@@chopperchopster exactly, back out a cpl deg just til it stops. Setting exactly to the manual only works when everything is brand new. After awhile you have to tweak to compensate for wear or non OE parts tolerances.

I just recently sold an 83 FLHT That one was so original the cigerette lighter still worked. I actually traded it for an 07 Softail and then sold that bike right away.
That is indeed a Denver's frame, the only time a Denver's bike would have had stock axle plates would be if it was built with a modified stock frame. There own built frames had axle plates just like the ones on the bike in the video.
That my son is what we old timers call Sportster Knee. Or it ratchets straight to the bottom, that's the one the shows you four more languages than you thought! Ask me how I know!

In 1978 a buddy of mine was engaged in "nefarious trade" with a 1% MC. The local Pres. invited him to one of their parties and bring friends, so me & other friends went w him. The first thing we see are 30 shovels, pans, knuckles and irons all in a perfect row and all kickers. Back then we joked about inexperienced riders trying to start a kicker for the 1st time, getting launched over the handle bars. Not w these bikers. They were experts at startin' em' up
I rode a kick start only hardtail Shovel for 20 years, at one point I had a 105 lb girlfriend that I'd taught how to go outside and start the bike before we left somewhere so it'd be warmed up by the time I got my gear on. It's all in the technique, and as far as being thrown over the handlebars unless you've got auto advancing points that are stuck in the advanced position then you've got an old manual advance ignition that you forgot to retard before you tried kicking it, I've seen it happen more than once. 30 years ago me and some buddies were at a bar and had an altercation with a group of big mouths, I actually worked as a bouncer at the place but wasn't working that night, the owner of the bar was a good friend and he didn't even have to say that although it was them we needed to get out of the place before the police showed up, that way it was only them getting arrested. When we were outside trying to get going 3 State Trooper cars showed up, one of them pulled up close to a friend's bike that had an old manual advance ignition, I was talking to one of the troopers that I knew from him responding to calls at the place who knew I worked there, as I was talking to him assuring him that we were trying to get out of the place to avoid trouble I was watching over his shoulder as my slightly annebriated friend went to start his bike forgetting to retard the ignition, it was a chilly evening and we'd been at the place long enough that a kick only bike would require a few prime kicks before turning on the ignition, while I'm looking over that troopers shoulder and saw my friend turn on the ignition after a few prime kicks I was just thinking to myself "I wonder if he remembered to..." before I could finish the thought I had the answer to that question, in his slightly drunken haste he'd forgotten to retard the timing and got thrown directly into the hood of one of the troopers cars, the one I was talking to heard what I'm sure he thought was someone attacking his car and when he turned around there was my friend sprawled across the hood of it, he went running over and snatched him up and started shaking him screaming "You smart ass little son of a..." at the same time I'm going "No no no you don't understand what happened", of course he thought my friend had taken a flying leap onto the hood of his car being a drunken smart ass, after I diffused the situation by explaining the mechanics of a manual advance ignition and assuring him that in my friend's excitement and haste he'd forgotten to retard the timing after the last time he shut it off. The moral of that story boys and girls is if you have a manual advance ignition on a kick only Harley it's best to just be in the habit of retarding the timing as soon as you shut it off because you never know when you might be in a hurry to leave somewhere and instead wind up on the hood of a police car at an inopportune moment.
@@dukecraig2402 Wow! Great story LOL. Back in 77 I had a friend who had a early 60's Duo Glide who explained the mechanics of retarding the timing with a kick start. His bike was a barn find he got a really good deal on, but it had sat for so long that he had to do a lot of restoration work on it so he knew every nut and bolt on that bike. He put a suicide throttle on it, so I would occasionally see him a' toolin' down the road kicked back, with his arms folded across his chest on a straightaway LOL. Not something I would ever do, but as far as I know he never had a crash.
@@GTX1123 Back then the throttles that had the cable that ran inside the right side handlebar and had a worm feed kind of deal at the inside of the handgrip didn't have a spring return like modern bikes do, wherever the throttle position was if you let go of the grip it just stayed there, that's actually how people wanted them made back then, your throttle hand and wrist suffered a lot less from fatigue from not having to constantly be twisting against the return spring that modern style throttles have, I don't know if some type of federally mandated automatic return to idle feature if you let go of the throttle was enacted or if the motorcycle manufacturers did that on their own or exactly what the story is on that, I do know in 1975 the federal government mandated that all controls on new motorcycle's sold in the US had to have the clutch, throttle, front and rear brakes all in the current position where they are now, previous to that Sportsters and British bikes had the rear brake and shifter switched from where they are now, 75 and 76 Sportsters had that junk under the frame crossover tube with all kind of linkage points to move the shifter to the left side that was a real abortion of a design that they straightened out in 77 by having the shifter shaft come out of the primary cover on the left side like they should have done from day one, and that change over hurt the market for British bikes here in America because with US sales already shrinking they were reluctant to redesign and retool to change the shifter and rear brake around just for the US, but by 75 every bike sold in the US that I know of already had the automatic spring return on the throttle anyways, maybe before the mandatory controls location law of 75 they'd already forced them to adapt auto idling spring return throttles I'm just not sure on that one. The left grip on the old Harley's was a twist grip just like the throttle on the right side but it was the timing advance, usually once you had it started you'd just leave it advanced all the way unless your engine got hot enough that it'd knock pulling away from a stop then you'd have to feed it the timing as you pulled away same as you'd feed it throttle. That's where a lot of guys would screw up when riding a bike that had manual timing advance but had been customized, once you got rid of the original handlebars like everyone did when they'd customize a barn find back then you'd have to reach down and turn the distributor on the motor, given a high pressure situation like my drunken buddy did that night he just forgot to do it, like I said with one of those set ups you were best off getting in the habit of retarding the timing whenever you shut it off, that way you didn't have to worry about it the next time you went to start it and you wouldn't have to worry about being sprawled across the hood of a state police cruiser.
@@dukecraig2402 From what I remember, this friend of mine removed the windshield, luggage bags and modified the seat post so he could put a really cool looking longer, banana seat on it. I think he also put some bobbed fenders on it as well. There was a lot of surface rust everywhere from sitting for so long but he cleaned it up nicely. Other than that it was stock, including the handle bars.
@@GTX1123 That long seat you're describing sounds like a stock "buddy seat", back then they basically came with 2 different types, a solo seat that looked just like the part you sit on from a horse saddle (which is why in the OEM parts books they're still called a saddle to this day) and the longer buddy seat that a lot of people call a banana seat due to the fact that they kinda resemble a banana seat from a bicycle back then, the buddy seat had a secondary set of springs attached to the frame that'd flip up into place to compensate for the additional weight of a person you'd put behind you on it, sounds like you're describing what he'd have done to change it from the stock solo seat to a stock buddy seat, without the secondary springs that flip up into place when you'd put someone on the back the pogo spring that goes down inside the frame tube under the seat post would bottom out harshly on bumps, whenever you didn't have someone on the back the springs folded down into a clip that grabbed the crossbar between the two springs, if you look around online by entering something like "Harley buddy seat with springs" on Google you can probably find some good pictures of it and you'll remember it when you see it.
I built a Pan/Shovel that had a lot of rake/stretch dialed into the frame. Slow-speed maneuvers were a chore. At highway speed, the thing handled as if it were on rails. That frame is from Denver's Choppers. A pal of mine built his Shovel around a Denver's frame and then added a monumentally-long springer (sans front brake). My pal lived to tell the tale. Ride safe.

Yo,,before I reincarnate I will give up this tip i learned 50 years ago. "The Spring Device on Screen Doors" that helps stabilize and close the door. mount one on both sides of the Front End👍🏼 The front tire flop will stop. Ride Tested Daily on Dennis"Hank"Hankins 750/4 Honda w/20 over. not the one with the air rod in it,,the Spring loaded Screen Door closer gizmo thing😎
Looks like a CycleFab build. Dave and Donny Perewitz's shop up there in Brockton, Mass. Granted, lots of guys copied their paint and stripe "style" but, at least on this video it looks like their build/paint. Hope that helps.
Been there, Done that. After i finished building my shovel chopper i think i sent my knee from sweden to africa or something. After some trial and error i learned the "proper" start procedure. But once in a while when i'm in a hurry i still get close to have the badass kickback experience. Fun to watch tho, I grabbed my right knee in a split second when i saw the clip. :D
I'm 61yrs. old & when I turned 16 and started riding my dad threw a pair of engineer boots at me and said "don' let me see you riding without those on." Now-a-days it's like I can't ride without my Chucky's, Ha ha ha ha Unbelievable!
I've owned several strokers in my younger days. You never kick a stroker while wearing sneakers. I've seen guys shoes get kicked off & the kicker split their shin open. No joke.
I've came up with a survivor 57 ironhead. Similar frame. Stretched, lowered. Springer. 9 foot wheelbase. King and Queen seat. Named it Christine after the car. Thing wants to kill you. Anyway, kicked back on me a couple of times. Kick with with pad of my foot so it just rolls my toes. Thing that got me was kicking it once and lost the ratchet action. Was in full kick mode with no resistance. Foot followed the kicker arch and hyper extended my knee. Pain brothers, pain. It was for sale before I hit the concrete. Took two weeks for me to forgive it and start our relationship over. It was grinning at me like a shit eating possum the whole time. I'm not sure who owns who in this relationship.

One cold morning in Mena, Arkansas my friend with a Super Glide spent half an hour jumping up and down in his bike. We did finally get going and most of the five of us hadn’t brought any gloves. Long ride back to Shreveport. That is a killer looking bike.
I'm not into the bike scene at all, but I've seen those old movies or clips and I picture in my mind the wiry little Hells Angels dudes laying into those kick starts! It's like damn, those old bikes have some real compression!! Wow!
Cool looking bike, I used to ride a 67 Triumph Chopper back in 1980 when I lived in The Valley in California so I had to laugh when it kicked back on you. Because I definitely know the feeling my friend! LOL
I've only had one savage kickback like that on my 79 phatbob, couldn't walk for a day. If the owner is running on only 1 shitty brake, why not just go full on and jockey shift that beast, you know what I'm saying?
The rear brake has been centered and that’s why it works good enough to slide the rear of the motorcycle. You do that by jacking up the rear wheel up and spin lt and get a helper to stab it and turn the wheel again and you need to losesen the bolt at the rear of the motorcycle. And when you turn the wheel this time have your helper hit the brake and hold it. Then tighten up the nut. Now you have centered your brake shoes and you do the same thing on the front brake if it has that on it to center the brake shoes and then they work like they are supposed to work. And the magneto is easy to repair. Hope this help someone that doesn’t know how to center the brake shoes but there it is very simple. MLLH&R

I have been riding at 93 inch S&S pan since the early 80s, first thing is you need a boot with a heel so it doesn’t slip off, And on the compression stroke, you have to keep your foot all the way to the ground if you let it start coming up it’s going to push up. And if you had a kicker gear like mine you always could come crashing down with all your force and missed that top round it off truth and it’s by all the girls to just send your heel into the pavement, ha ha ha ha welcome to the pains of kisses darling I’m 58 years old I still have my panhead
there is a reason why electric starters were put on these things. and the little clutch thingy that is supposed to prevent this kind of thing needs some love, be good mechanics and fix it!!
My xr 250 kicks back sometimes, it sprained my ankle once. Can't imagine getting kick back on that thing, jeez, ouch. By the way you guys are the best.
Check your timing if your idle is to low you will have a hard time starting it those mags are tricky to set but once you dialed it in it's a one kick start. Is that a morris magneto if so it will have a screw that you can set your retard movement to start usually 3/4 inch it looks like my old bike but mine was blue and it was in 1977.

Had ah 49 pan head chop that tryed tah throw my ass over drag bars more than once. Riden home one night while holding loose gen. To make contact for lights. It died 2 miles from home, had anger issues from getting shocked, threw er in ah dich, went back next morn tha get er, I bought tha bike from ah auto salvage yard close to Wichita in tha 70s for 100 dollars, turned it into ah bad ass chop sold er fer 1200. She made some wide ass memories, for sure. If ya dont like geten shocked after ah few brewskies guys, keep her dam gen bolts tight. Lol
When I was 15, I remember how much I hated the every-once-in-a-while leg whip I got from my Suzuki 175 enduro's kick start lever, kicking back hard into my calf. I can't imagine getting leg whipped by an old iron head motor.
Be careful what you ask for. As a short distance, show-and-go-bar hopper, sure, they're a lot of fun, but they don't turn worth a crap and can be a torture on your back & knees (I had a raked and lowered pro street for a while). My HD Fatboy I now have was worth every penny I paid for it. Just the right seat, mini apes and V&H pipes. It's the best of both worlds; bad ass looking, rides like butter and is tight in turns.
I GOT a chopper that LOVES to do the EXACT same thing! 49 Panhead chopper, mag locked FULL advance, better KNOW what you're DOING when you kick it cause it ABSOLUTELY WILL kick you BACK!!! Lol. (It was my Dad's and it's EXACTLY how HE rode it in the 60's!, OTHER than I added the front brake, which he made me PROMISE I would do! DRUM, of course, period correct, doesn't like to stop but MAN, does she GO!!!)
choppers like this are nice to look at...nice to listen to.....ride a 100 miles on one...and you'll start hating them....there is nothing forgiving about a rigid frame

That's where a lot of guys would screw up when riding a bike that had manual timing advance but had been customized, once you got rid of the original handlebars like everyone did when they'd customize a barn find back then you'd have to reach down and turn the distributor on the motor, given a high pressure situation like my drunken buddy did that night he just forgot to do it, like I said with one of those set ups you were best off getting in the habit of retarding the timing whenever you shut it off, that way you didn't have to worry about it the next time you went to start it and you wouldn't have to worry about being sprawled across the hood of a state police cruiser.
@@dukecraig2402 From what I remember, this friend of mine removed the windshield, luggage bags and modified the seat post so he could put a really cool looking longer, banana seat on it. I think he also put some bobbed fenders on it as well. There was a lot of surface rust everywhere from sitting for so long but he cleaned it up nicely. Other than that it was stock, including the handle bars.

That long seat you're describing sounds like a stock "buddy seat", back then they basically came with 2 different types, a solo seat that looked just like the part you sit on from a horse saddle (which is why in the OEM parts books they're still called a saddle to this day) and the longer buddy seat that a lot of people call a banana seat due to the fact that they kinda resemble a banana seat from a bicycle back then, the buddy seat had a secondary set of springs attached to the frame that'd flip up into place to compensate for the additional weight of a person you'd put behind you on it, sounds like you're describing what he'd have done to change it from the stock solo seat to a stock buddy seat, without the secondary springs that flip up into place when you'd put someone on the back the pogo spring that goes down inside the frame tube under the seat post would bottom out harshly on bumps, whenever you didn't have someone on the back the springs folded down into a clip that grabbed the crossbar between the two springs, if you look around online by entering something like "Harley buddy seat with springs" on Google you can probably find some good pictures of it and you'll remember it when you see it.
I built a Pan/Shovel that had a lot of rake/stretch dialed into the frame. Slow-speed maneuvers were a chore. At highway speed, the thing handled as if it were on rails. That frame is from Denver's Choppers. A pal of mine built his Shovel around a Denver's frame and then added a monumentally-long springer (sans front brake). My pal lived to tell the tale. Ride safe.

"The Spring Device on Screen Doors" that helps stabilize and close the door. mount one on both sides of the Front End👍🏼 The front tire flop will stop. Been there, Done that. After i finished building my shovel chopper i think i sent my knee from sweden to africa or something. After some trial and error i learned the "proper" start procedure. But once in a while when i'm in a hurry i still get close to have the badass kickback experience. Fun to watch tho, I grabbed my right knee in a split second when i saw the clip. :D

I've came up with a survivor 57 ironhead. Similar frame. Stretched, lowered. Springer. 9 foot wheelbase. King and Queen seat. Named it Christine after the car. Thing wants to kill you. Anyway, kicked back on me a couple of times. Kick with with pad of my foot so it just rolls my toes. Thing that got me was kicking it once and lost the ratchet action. Was in full kick mode with no resistance. Foot followed the kicker arch and hyper extended my knee. Pain brothers, pain. It was for sale before I hit the concrete. Took two weeks for me to forgive it and start our relationship over. It was grinning at me like a shit eating possum the whole time. I'm not sure who owns who in this relationship.
Can’t wait to build my ironhead and ride with the sleazy co.

One cold morning in Mena, Arkansas my friend with a Super Glide spent half an hour jumping up and down in his bike. We did finally get going and most of the five of us hadn’t brought any gloves. Long ride back to Shreveport. That is a killer looking bike.

I've only had one savage kickback like that on my 79 phatbob, couldn't walk for a day. If the owner is running on only 1 shitty brake, why not just go full on and jockey shift that beast, you know what I'm saying?
I know that Shovelhead kickback pain. When it kicked I'm sitting here I winced and grabbed my right knee.
The rear brake has been centered and that’s why it works good enough to slide the rear of the motorcycle. You do that by jacking up the rear wheel up and spin lt and get a helper to stab it and turn the wheel again and you need to losesen the bolt at the rear of the motorcycle. And when you turn the wheel this time have your helper hit the brake and hold it. Then tighten up the nut. Now you have centered your brake shoes and you do the same thing on the front brake if it has that on it to center the brake shoes and then they work like they are supposed to work. And the magneto is easy to repair. Hope this help someone that doesn’t know how to center the brake shoes but there it is very simple. MLLH&R

I have been riding at 93 inch S&S pan since the early 80s, first thing is you need a boot with a heel so it doesn’t slip off,
And on the compression stroke, you have to keep your foot all the way to the ground if you let it start coming up it’s going to push up.
And if you had a kicker gear like mine you always could come crashing down with all your force and missed that top round it off truth and it’s by all the girls to just send your heel into the pavement, ha ha ha ha welcome to the pains of kisses darling I’m 58 years old I still have my panhead

there is a reason why electric starters were put on these things. and the little clutch thingy that is supposed to prevent this kind of thing needs some love, be good mechanics and fix it!!

It's always a pain in the ass to Kickstarter really low bike, once your heel hits that fucking ground use all the momentum.
My xr 250 kicks back sometimes, it sprained my ankle once. Can't imagine getting kick back on that thing, jeez, ouch. By the way you guys are the best.
Check your timing if your idle is to low you will have a hard time starting it those mags are tricky to set but once you dialed it in it's a one kick start. Is that a morris magneto if so it will have a screw that you can set your retard movement to start usually 3/4 inch it looks like my old bike but mine was blue and it was in 1977.

Had ah 49 pan head chop that tryed tah throw my ass over drag bars more than once. Riden home one night while holding loose gen. To make contact for lights. It died 2 miles from home, had anger issues from getting shocked, threw er in ah dich, went back next morn tha get er, I bought tha bike from ah auto salvage yard close to Wichita in tha 70s for 100 dollars, turned it into ah bad ass chop sold er fer 1200. She made some wide ass memories, for sure. If ya dont like geten shocked after ah few brewskies guys, keep her dam gen bolts tight. Lol

When I was 15, I remember how much I hated the every-once-in-a-while leg whip I got from my Suzuki 175 enduro's kick start lever, kicking back hard into my calf. I can't imagine getting leg whipped by an old iron head motor.
I want a chopper. What's a good beginner, I was thinking a Yamaha 650 sportster with a 3" fork extension. I like that old school chopper look.
Be careful what you ask for. As a short distance, show-and-go-bar hopper, sure, they're a lot of fun, but they don't turn worth a crap and can be a torture on your back & knees (I had a raked and lowered pro street for a while). My HD Fatboy I now have was worth every penny I paid for it. Just the right seat, mini apes and V&H pipes. It's the best of both worlds; bad ass looking, rides like butter and is tight in turns.

I GOT a chopper that LOVES to do the EXACT same thing! 49 Panhead chopper, mag locked FULL advance, better KNOW what you're DOING when you kick it cause it ABSOLUTELY WILL kick you BACK!!! Lol. (It was my Dad's and it's EXACTLY how HE rode it in the 60's!, OTHER than I added the front brake, which he made me PROMISE I would do! DRUM, of course, period correct, doesn't like to stop but MAN, does she GO!!!)
choppers like this are nice to look at...nice to listen to.....ride a 100 miles on one...and you'll start hating them....there is nothing forgiving about a rigid frame
