  • In this video, I show three classic mistakes players make when playing a backhand drive. The three mistakes are reaching sideways, reaching forwards and hitting down on the ball. I explain why you should avoid these mistakes and how to correct them.

    Really nice, just like most of your video's so far. Do wish you made a few more video's about defence though. With regular rubbers and long pip tips at least. Personally I would love to see advice on switching from defence to offence and back within rally's, since so many defencive players get stuck on that.

    Thanks Tom , others 2 common mistakes are the the wrist is not relaxed at the end of the shot , touching the ball remain bloked, and another is that the arm extend completely without pivot on the elbow (like a door that open on his hinges).

      simple exercises to improve movement in backhand , 1 ball in the middle 1 ball in the backhand corner, another free block in the half left area of the table and you do backhand point the ball with your navel

    firstly, I love the videos you are producing. I am always looking forward to the next one and having Paul and Craig 'strut their stuff' is inspiring. However, I did NOT agree with your backhand drive video in regards to reaching. If the ball is short, surely you should be stepping in (and attacking where possible) as opposed to waiting for the ball. The earlier you can take the ball, the less time your opponent has and you also can get better angles
    cheers
    Mick

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you are correct. If the ball is short you should step in. I guess the point I was making in this video is that some people reach forward for the ball when it's not short, and that's the error to fix.

      Thanks for your question and coach's replication. I have the overreaching problem on my backhand and really is bothered by “short, high, backhand side" balls. But when I saw the video first, I didn't get the answer, or, it seemed that I should hit a ball "after it came down and close to me", which is quite difficult to time it. Ok, stepping in and close to a ball. Thanks. (Can you teach or demonstrate the "backhand smash"? Especially for hitting a mid-high low topspin.)

    Hi Tom. Enjoying your videos as I get back into table tennis after almost 25 years of not playing. I tend to play close to the table as a counter-hitter, and my backhand drive is generally pretty good (I probably over use it). Nevertheless, I struggle against my regular playing partner when he hits fast loopy shots deep towards my body. I almost jump a little up and back to avoid hitting the ball on the half volley, and end up hitting a fairly mediocre block quite high off the table. I suppose I could step back but perhaps I'm not anticipating the shot and I find there isn't much time to do this. I wonder whether you have any videos which would help, or perhaps that's a topic for a future video. I haven't seen much online about returning those body shots that cramp your stroke.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Edward - if you play close to the table, then you will be vulnerable to very deep balls. I have the same issue! Anticipation is key. If you watch your partner closely, you should see the topspin attack coming. Then you need to keep low, get your bat higher and close the bat angle. You can then block these attacks, whilst staying close-ish to to the table. You will be blocking quite soon after the bounce - which is an advanced skill, but can be very effective if you get it right. Next time I do a blocking video, I'll try and cover this topic.

    Tom, great video. One question though: when you hit backhand shots, your thumb seems to be a bit higher and more prominently placed on the bat. For a forehand shot, that would of course need to change.
    My question is: is it okay if the way we grip the paddle changes in some ways for forehand and backhand shots? Thanks.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some coaches say you should keep the same grip. other coaches say it's ok to make a small adjustment. I think it's ok to make a small adjustment, as long as it doesn't effect your consistency.

    what is the best paddle for intermediete player?

    • @CeRz
      @CeRz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completly dependent on your gamestyle. And there is no such thing as a best paddle for any intermediate players because it depends on what sort of style you play, defensive, offensive or the new offensive defensive style also if you topspin/loop or backspin block etc etc. Different paddles for different players.

    • @Yusuf-tf3fh
      @Yusuf-tf3fh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The most important is to get any bat that has good grip and speed, then just make a very solid technique.

    the first one only works for slow moving balls, unfortunately. Even the best players in the game suffer from reaching out. FZD, as an example, does it here, and then the very next point in the video he does it again!
