I was a Space Mountain operator back in 1979. Watching this video I cannot believe that the breakdown/evacuation protocols of those old days were not followed. First, the work lights should have come on before your train even stopped. Second, there should have been operations personnel at your train within 90 seconds of your train stopping. The thought of leaving people in a stopped train in the dark for as long as you were is patently unthinkable! Shame Shame on Disney for putting you through this with no compensatory action. Truly shocking to see this and makes me very sad.
Well, as I have heard comments,, there are tons of budget cuts and Cast members being laid off. Those that are hired, no longer go through the extensive training, they go through a quick coarse to get them working. So, it is evident that the cast members were following some kind of protocal, they knew what they were doing and what safety measures had to be started. As for lights coming on when the ride failed and running up the stairs in 90 seconds, things in the di$ney parks have changed, though I dont understand why it would change protocal in the mountain, but it did. Lighting has been changed for xmas showing and it could have easily delayed or abandoned any instant on lighting when the coaster stops. As for the cast members being slow to get to the top of the mountain, that could be in the quick training modifications again. Systems and transportation is so complicated in this company that they need people who KNOW the protocals to make changes. However, they are moving people around or letting them go and replacing with new people so it is no surprise there are alarming problems popping up such as this.; Enjoy, this won't be the last one that has similar problems.
I see a few more carts rolling through on another track or part of the track. So they were waiting for those to finish rolling through before turning on the lights to not break immersion for those last riders to finish before getting back to the people who were stuck. This is what happens when you have too many carts rolling on the track at once. The lights probably should have come on as soon as there were any issues discovered that required stopping the ride though [And they definitely should have tried to get people up and through the ride faster to check on who was stuck]*
The Space Mt. ride is 2 minutes and 28 seconds from the point of dispatch. Operators should not dispatch trains on either track when there is a breakdown. And it certainly makes no sense to keep dispatching trains when the other track is stopped in the dark. As for the elevator, its express purpose is to a. Get personnel to stuck trains quickly and b. To use for evacuation purposes. I have reset the tracks (which has to be done by climbing and following the track) hundreds of times. And it doesn’t take long to get to the top as there are several stair towers strategically built into the system. Know before you go,
i can't believe the CM didn't have some sort of compensation on your way out, saying you could try guest services (where no doubt there's a half hour line). That's crazy and a huge change from how they used to do things.
If it is any consolation, my 8 year old daughter and I were stuck on Spaceship Earth in Epcot prior to its renovation for an hour. They left all of the passengers in total darkness during rhe wait. I was so happy my child did not have a panic attack. Once the power was restored, the ride continued as if nothing had happened. Nine years later she has no recollection of the event.
I just saw a vid of a coaster with a loop that put the brakes on and the coaster was at the top of the loop, upside down. These riders were up there for over an hour before they could get the coaster to move.
When i used to go to disney as a kid about 5 years ago our whole family would get free instant fastpasses for another ride in the park if a evacuation occured i guess those days are over thanks to the company now not giving any care for their customers while still charging them more and more money to experience their park
The first time we went to the Magic Kingdom back in 1974, we waited for hours to get on Space Mountain. As we were waiting to be loaded the ride went down and they turned on all of the lights inside. We were able to see that it was a giant indoor rollercoaster. Things never change. 😅
I have been on the Matterhorn when it broke down and Pirates of the Caribbean. Believe me you're one of the few that are privileged to see the inside of Space Mountain. So no worries. They do have elevators to take those with disabilities down.
This person told them repeatedly that she was uncomfortable at the top. I am sort of surprised they didnt shove her into the elevator. I worked ina factory that had an elevator that opened to a open deck about 4 times as high as this location. It takes your breath away the first time you see it.
Not true. It's one thing to be riding a ride that you know you're safely strapped into (and in this particular case, where you know that you won't really see just how high up you are because it's a dark ride); it's another to suddenly see exactly how high up you are and then realize you have to get yourself down.
Oh Kristen! I felt your pain of being stuck so high up and then having to jump out! But how fun to see the inside with the lights on! I'm one of those Disney fans who WANTS to get evac'd from a ride, but maybe not that one from so high up! Lol! 😬😀
Kristen you did awesome. If someone has not been evacuated from a ride they don’t understand how nerve wrecking it can be. Watching live I felt you handled it very well.
We broke down at the very top of the main lift and waited forever while they cycled cars on the other side before they brought the lights up. It was right at park close and we walked out to an almost empty park.
This happens at Disneyland in California and they Got it down! Immediately the light comes on . Upon hearing what's going on frequently With your situation cast members come out and have the Whole situation under control. They talk frequently back to the station. With only one track to deal with they continue to Move from the bottom catwalk to the top top catwalk and push each train. Upon pushing each train 1 at a time all trains arrives back at the station Within fifteen minutes of the breakdown. Seems from this video.Disney world needs a new system with their breakdowns🤷♀️

I was on California Screaming when it broke. Our train stopped at one of the high points and it was plain scary. We had to get out of the car with no safety harness and walk down several flights of stairs.
I think it is true that that is a safe and normal break zone / a better spot to stop than many and staying seated there's no real danger, it's just that any time you are dealing with getting people out of something that has mechanical moving parts that isn't in standard functioning mode and at its standard load/unload spot or on the groynd (be it an elevator, a roller coaster, whatever) it's important to have the safety experts there in case.
WE BROKE DOWN ON SPLASH MOUNTAIN ON TOP RAMP ALSO....WALKED US DOWN THROUGH FAKE MOUNTAIN AND OUT BACK OF SHOW BUILDING...TOOK FOREVER TO GET BACK TO ENTRANCE AREA. GOT FAST PASS FOR OTHER RIDES...THATS IT...HAHA
Btw, some interesting things to note in this video (rare because of the height) - the twin lift hills, each dispatching to one of the twin layouts in the Mountain. Literally one spills off to the left, the other to the right, in a mirrored arrangement. Also, apparently, the core of the Mountain has an elevator. Why it wasn't used for the evacuation? 🤷♂️ As for the cause, they run many many trains at once on the system with multiple block sections. Only one train can ever be in a block at once; if the system ever detects more than one it means a train is running too fast or too slow and ALL the trains immediately get stopped; each block has a brake run to effect this stop. The issue in the video was it appeared the train didn't get all the way into the brake run before it stopped -- this area, right off the top of the lift, is perhaps the slowest speed of the run. So the cast members were cautious about releasing the passengers until (apparently) they got three burly maintenance folks to physically hold the train for safety.
Train stops suddenly, sit in the dark for an age without explanation. Because you paid a fortune for a Christmas party, we can’t give you a lightning lane or even an apology but you could swing by Guest Services to see if they give a **** 😂

This is not an uncommon occurrence on this ride. Happed to our family over 10 year ago too. All the lights came on and we walked up, down, around and out, pretty cool seeing all the inter workings.
If one of the vehicles/ cars stops on a block break stop, then you just walk along the evacuation platforms and back down, but because it’s stuck in a spot where it doesn’t have that as such that’s probably why they’re having to get the Fire Brigade to help you out.
I don't know why this is so difficult for people to understand ... I myself do not like heights at ALL, yet I enjoy rides because 1) I know I'm strapped in and safe; and 2) there is a BIG difference between riding a ride that goes up high but which is over relatively fast, versus needing to get out of your ride vehicle at that high point and get yourself back down to the ground. YES, walking down those stairs was reasonably safe; it's not like she was on the edge of a cliff with no railings or anything like that. But for someone who does not like heights in general (and if you also happen to not love stairs - I ALWAYS feel unstable on them, even if it's a completely enclosed stairway with huge railings), it can be VERY scary walking yourself down several flights when you can see the entire way to the concrete ground.

I am guessing they were trying to see about getting it going again. When the lights came on is when they decided it could not start again. It also sounded like when they got up there the ride cast member was not sure if the ride was in a safe place to get the people off.
Space mountain is the oldest operating rollercoaster in Florida, made by the same manufacturer of “sandblaster” on Daytona beach boardwalk that derailed and severely injured riders
No it's not. Sandblaster was made by Pinfari. Space mountain was made Arrow and Disney. They are entirely seperate designs, manufacturer and pretty much everything about them is different.
@@coasters_bgw They didn't reconstruct Disneylands Space Mountain Coaster because it was necessary, they did it because new technology came out and they could put in a smoother ride. Space Mountain in the Magic Kingdom, WDW was built first so it has the original track technology.

And remember, they used to book you, say $35 per night, and if you went through a price period where they would charge more money per night, YOU would stay at the $35 rate. They don't do that anymore either.
It's all money with di$ney now and the attractions are starting to show it.
I no longer enjoy any ride I cannot walk off of. Been stuck on many rides. No thanks. Plus, the lights and music would have driven me nuts.
Why are the lights not on?
lights not on? how long did you watch the vid?
It's appalling that no cast member has even showed up Wow this is the worst evacuation I've ever seen What if there had been a fire this is unfathomable inexcusable and unforgivable
Yep never riding this again
Can't wait to get back on. The stopping is the best part
I would be so scared
Very scary! Don’t think I’d ride that again. Even more so sense seeing the innards.
Wow this is not a rare thing..happens quite a bit...Are you or were you afraid....
I think they stopped it because the guy in front of you kept sticking his arms out. Smh
He was making faces at the cameras
well that sucks I I
Not even a random ride or food voucher?! Disney is anti-consumer.
If you don't know di$ney by now, you never will
The cast members took too long way too long
I am guessing they were trying to see about getting it going again. When the lights came on is when they decided it could not start again. It also sounded like when they got up there the ride cast member was not sure if the ride was in a safe place to get the people off.
This was nothing, some rides take 60 minutes to get you out.
@@lifequest7453Which ones? I shall avoid them.
@@billcooper4525 If you are paying for lightening lane, go for it and enjoy
@@billcooper4525 On second thought, YOU should avoid them all.
In the first time in forever
Hi
What is wrong with the elevators??? No backup power lol. Disney has gone downhill.
Kristen is soo brave 😄👍. Fantastic 😄😄👍
it's f'in stairs and she's terrified???
is it really that difficult to understand that different circumstances affect people in different ways?
Girl you was so scared yet wanted to stop for pics 😂😂😂😂
She is literally doing the most! Its annoying
My kids would de desesprated by now
😱
I remember going on space mountain because in 1982 on my class trip. That building and ride in old.
@@known1443 Disneyland Space mountain has had an entrie track rebuild done. Space Mountain in Florida was scheduled for one but I think IGER killed it
@@lifequest7453 He would do it if it was necessary, which it is not. Evidence: the fact they're doing one on BTMRR where it is necessary
@@coasters_bgw ?
@@coasters_bgw They didn't reconstruct Disneylands Space Mountain Coaster because it was necessary, they did it because new technology came out and they could put in a smoother ride. Space Mountain in the Magic Kingdom, WDW was built first so it has the original track technology.
Bit of an over reaction to safety doing its job, better than it ending in a crash dont you think? Not the end of the world but It sounded like it was, moan moan moan.
