One of the more subtle parts of Peggy's personality is that for all her many flaws, she's actually a badass who doesn't flinch in the face of danger. There was one episode where they thought they were being robbed, and Peggy breaks off a chair leg and is ready to throw down like it's nothing.
I love it, things like that are priceless. It's very rare that a character garners as much hatred as she does, I actually feel for her. Like those scenes where the women who are training for the women's whatever it was called the beauty show. When everyone else was talking to each other Peggy was sitting by herself. With the problems her dealing with the large feet which I don't get people being hateful towards someone with big feet. I don't have long feet mine are more wider than anything.
Peggy gets a lot of shit and can definitely be insufferable when she's at her worst, but she's still honest, hard-working, and undeniably dedicated to her family. She's always prepared to give 110% to Hank, Bobby, and Luanne. Luanne isn't even her kid, and she didn't have to step in and step up, but she decided to be a mother and mentor for her niece. Peggy is full of herself, but she's also full of love for her family, so I can give her a pass.
When Hank was accused of racism, she started to believe in it and got mad at Hank for women trying to hit on him even though he flat out rejected them.
Peggy Hill is definitely one of the best characters on this show. Missing the wonderful scene where she explains what happened with Lupe in Spanish to the court.
That has to be one of the best episodes ever! The substitute teacher of Spanish who doesn't know too much Spanish. Confuses the word embarrass with pregnant and "carnicero"(butcher) with carnival etc etc. I love Peggy and I wish they would bring it back!!
Selfish? Yes. Arrogant? Definitely. Sanctimonious? Absolutely. Peggy is a woman with serious flaws and delusions of grandeur, but she's not cruel, spiteful or sadistic like her mother, which is clearly why she behaves the way she does. Traumatized and desperate to be different, she at least wants to be a better person. For that, I can cut her just a little bit of slack.
That was a retcon that came out several years after Pegg’s character had already been established. Peggy’s mother appeared in a few earlier episodes and she was totally different from how she had been portrayed before. The original version of her mother was kind and actually had a mother/daughter relationship with Peggy. Then there was the whole Luanne’s father being retconned having been in jail since she was a kid, when many episodes had said she only recently moved in with the Hills after her mother attacked her father with a fork.

Still, the Hills are just one archetype of American families. It shows the flaws and shortcomings of our culture while highlighting the things about America that make us proud. It's not all negative. Every one of us could be made into a cartoon character worth laughing at, not just these quaint Texans.

Stacked up together, these scenes can put Peggy in a negative light, but at her core she is a good person despite being pretty self-centered. If other characters had all of her characteristics, especially male characters, they wouldn't get nearly as much criticism as she does. I hate how people are so critical of complex characters.

I think the worst thing to me that Peggy's done to an Arlen citizen is taking the time to point out to Bobby that his crush did not love him as much as she loved Hank. She had to clarify to him that she was right when he was clearly distraught.

The context of the ice cream makes it even better. She spent a lot of money just buying the ingredients, putting them together, and throwing away what she couldn't guess. She spent over $100 easily at home to get one free ice cream. That's not even counting the ice creams she bought when she didn't guess the correct weight.

ok but the best part about Peggy Hill is that she’s more like the fathers in animated shows vs the mothers. She’s just as loud, annoying, problematic, overconfident, etc etc like the men characters, and she’s allowed to be as messy as them and make a damn fool out of herself but also still be a character you can’t help but love despite her flaws. She’s not perfect vision of femininity or motherhood, she’s not a long suffering doormat, she’s not someone who can clearly do better and married way below her, she’s a hot ass mess and I think the most accurate reflection of a real woman-flaws and all-in an animated show. You might not have ever met a Marge or Lois in your life but you sure have all met some version of a Peggy Hill thats for damn sure.

ok but the best part about Peggy Hill is that she’s more like the fathers in animated shows vs the mothers. She’s just as loud, annoying, problematic, overconfident, etc etc like the men characters, and she’s allowed to be as messy as them and make a damn fool out of herself but also still be a character you can’t help but love despite her flaws. She’s not perfect vision of femininity or motherhood, she’s not a long suffering doormat, she’s not someone who can clearly do better and married way below her, she’s a hot ass mess and I think the most accurate reflection of a real woman-flaws and all-in an animated show. You might not have ever met a Marge or Lois in your life but you sure have all met some version of a Peggy Hill thats for damn sure.
