For all her faults, Peggy is probably the deepest, most three-dimensional character in the series. The episode where she reunites with her mom not only clarifies her personality but also highlights how much she’s grown. You see why she is the headstrong, overly self-reliant (sometimes self-aggrandizing) person she is. But, at the same time, you see how she sloughed off her upbringing and mom’s influence to love her child unconditionally (despite his many “feminine” traits her mother would’ve despised) and become a loving, present mother who encourages Bobby to be himself. That balance of background and growth are why I think she’s the most human - because of and not in spite of her flaws - in the show. And I can’t wait until next year to see how she’s changed.
Peggy isn’t a narcissist and I think everyone calling her one proves how misunderstood that disorder is. Peggy has narcissistic traits for sure but she’s not a true narcissist. Her insecurities can be explained and her heart is always in the right place. Many of the things people say she’s terrible for are also things Hank is also guilty of as well as other characters on the show. But only Peggy is hated for these flaws. Just Peggy. IMO I think Peggy personifies a lot of midwestern and southern mothers. And I genuinely think people are projecting their hatred for these types of mothers onto Peggy. Same people who hate Peggy Hill and call her a narcissist are the same people that call every other woman they meet a Karen. It just bothers me how Peggy’s flaws are highlighted and focused in on by the fandom and taken extremely seriously and yet Hanks flaws aren’t. People are forgiving of when Hank f**ks up but not Peggy. It’s just funny the double standard. I do think some subconscious misogyny is involved in people’s intense hatred for Peggy. I’m sorry but no one can’t tell me I’m wrong. I’ve heard every argument for why you all despise Peggy. And none of you have convinced me I’m wrong only convinced me that I’m right about y’all.
I kinda dig her relentless self confidence. True narcissism usually presents with victimising and fake humility looking for external validation. Peggy doesn’t need external validation, it’s just when the world contrasts with her self view she gets upset. And it’s pretty cool she’s got a coping mechanism of self confidence from a pretty awful background.
