Most aviation enthusiasts are familiar with the tragic story of the B-29 bomber called the
Kee Bird. However, most of us have not seen the private video footage recorded by WeeGee Smith, a member of the very first expedition to locate the Kee Bird.
This video reveals some footage recorded by WeeGee Smith on the first trip to the Kee Bird site in 1993.
Additional footage obtained from Catherine Hansen, estate of Edward Hansen.

I couldn't agree more. When I originally watched the NOVA documentary, I thought they operated on a shoe-string budget. But when you think about it, it costs a lot of money to truck a UH-1 helicopter across the US, then up to Greenland in a C-130. Then you need fuel... lots and lots of fuel. Then, oh by the way, we need replacement engines and propellers.
@@HistoryX until you told me they used a helicopter, I thought their only means of transport was the Caribou for the last leg.
@@JohnChvatalGSTV According to the book they had planned on using both the chopper and caribou together when they came back, but the huey broke down so that's why it's not in the NOVA documentary.

Not sure, and with speculation that this creator ripped this video footage from another user that posted the Darryl Greenamyer Hi8 tape version, and this is just an entirely cropped and edited version.
The rap song was really out of place and not relevant whatsoever.

Thanks for watching! And excellent question about the Kee Bird. There are quite a few people, and companies, that claim ownership to the whole story. But I have found a way to tell the rest of the story, it’s taking a bit longer than I had expected. I hope you will be patient with me a bit longer?

Guy stole the original video and that's why it's covered with music. The original unedited version can be found on another TH-camr chanel.

@@HistoryX Going to say my piece here not out of any malice, but just speculation, if this is that very same copy of the VHS you're claiming, wouldn't the entire video be a little less zoomed out and showing the full picture? Comparing to the official Darryl Greenamyer's Hi8 tape version, their footage is exactly the same, but shows additional footage portions on the outside, what you posted seemly is a more highly edited version with an oddly specific crop size of the Darryl Greenamyer's Hi8 tape video which DOES have a watermark right under where your video size is cropped to. If the VHS you obtained is in any way official it would be the same dimensions as the Darryl Greenamyer Hi8 tape without a watermark. Overall, this entire thing seems super sketchy if that's what it is.

This would have been a great video if the crap music had been left out.
Why the music? I don't care what kind... I want to hear the raw footage.
A lot of the raw footage had no sound at all when it was converted from high-8. Better luck next time.

I'm an Airplane Guy since birth. I was TERRIBLY DISTRESSED for weeks after I saw this when it originally aired. I was working on my A&P License and a Commercial Pilots rating in 1991. I'll NEVER forget how devastated I was a few years later when I saw this. It's a TOTAL SHAME. It could've been prevented. They also just had to leave 4 BRAND NEW R-3350s and Props. That's A LOT of $ but not enough to warrant trying to salvage them. 😔 RIP Rick.
The motors and propellers were rented, so in case someone would try to salvage them, the owner would demand them back.
It probably took longer to find the most horrible music than was spent on the attempted recovery of this rare bird

It was a huge shame that they didn't succeed with rescuing the B-29. Rick was so enthusiastic about the prospect of salvaging the bomber and he had made a lot of effort to fulfill this project. But instead he tragically died and never got to see his work paid off. But maybe it was a good thing that he didn't see its fiery destruction, he would have not been impressed.
Actually, it was in 1947 when the Kee Bird went down.

@@HistoryX I'm mostly interested in Maritime history. But I used to be extremely interested in the Kee Bird saga since I can remember watching the documentary when I was a kid. I even had a model of the B-29 before it crash landed which has seen better days now. I'm curious to learn more about how they tried to rescue the plane.

@@matthewcox6615 They borrowed zero-time engines and props to put on it and repaired the control surfaces. The plan was to limp it to Thule AFB and do more work before flying to the US. They were using investor money and trying to turn a profit. They got in a hurry and burnt it up, then the lawsuits.
Thanks for sharing. I would love to see all the footage that NOVA didn't use in the documentary, had to be hours of it.

Agreed! The story of the 'Kee Bird' recovery expedition was pretty incredible. But have you checked-out the 'Knight Rider Historians' channel? They found the original trailer used in the 'Knight Rider' show! (too nerdy?)

Someone tell me if I'm wrong or not, but aren't there complete blueprints of the B-29 still in existence? If that's true, then couldn't they be converted to CAD drawings?

You nailed it.... The cost. There simply is no aircraft available that far north that can carry any weight. Sad to say, I think it's up there for good.
When it started, I knew that the mechanic that was in the back of the helicopter would soon be dead. Thanks for the upload

@@analex4044 The mechanic Rick was injured during the expedition but declined medical treatment. He developed internal bleeding and did not survive when they flew him out.

Too bad you didnt have footage of them getting that one engine to run after they got the landing gear down. I remember the show from the 90s and being furious. Fast forward during my first westpac, i ordered the book and read it. I never doubted the challenges they went through. I hope you do some videos on the kee bird. And youve got yourself a new subscriber because with this and all your other vids youve checked all the boxes!
