Since this video was made there is now a second B-29 named "Doc" that has been recovered and made airworthy but let me tell when you stand next to a B-29, static or airworthy, my experience was with "FiFi" it is awe inspiring, a bomber that obliterated two Japanese cities, brought victory to America and now serves as a powerful and beautiful reminder of simpler times!

They NEEDED a Safety Officer to make decisions about the operation of the plane. Had the Pilot just have had a little patience to give them time to smooth the runway the improperly secured cargo wouldn't have caused the fire. They might have discovered the failure and corrected it.

Hey, Costa Pi! Thanks for the comment. Ok, here's the deal with the rest of the Kee Bird story... After posting Part 2, I eventually came in contact with one of the recovery team members. Since then I have had hours of discussions with him, as well as with others that were on-hand during that attempted recovery. I am also connecting with members of the NOVA documentary team as well. It has taken many months to find these people. I have learned so many fascinating stories that I have decided to re-tell the whole Kee Bird story. So please stay-tuned
My father was at Ladd field in Alaska and helped in the original search when the keebird was lost .the only way it was found was radio signal strength....it was way off coarse and it set down while it still had a little fuel left .as search planes got close to it the radio signal from the keep bird got clearer . They used multiple air craft to triangulate it's position and talked to the crew to keep up their spirits...when they found the crew they dropped blankets and food to them by air untill they flew in to pick them up . They were part of the 46th recon squardron .these planes we're considered to be F- 13 ,s for taking areal photos .
My Dad Ernie was one of the crew members on that plane. I want to thank your Dad with all my heart for helping to locate my Dad and his crew mates. He talked about the Keebird his whole life. He told us how one of the guys, nicknamed Lucky, last name Leudke, got a fire going to warm up the radio so they could call for help. He always said if they couldn't get the radio working (because it was about -35 degrees where they were) they would not have been found because they were so far off course and nobody knew where they were. The people who rescued my Dad and the crew of the Keebird are my heroes forever. I'm Ernie Stewart's daughter Karin.
@@mathewriccio I am glad your Dad was found and rescued....MY father told me abought this in the early 70,s and when this documentary came out abought the kee bird....he instantly told me his story again and said that they were really sweating it out until they found this crew!!!.....MY father passed away in 2004 and I know he would have liked to talk to your father just once more!!!

Kee Birds APU was not a 2 stroke it was a V twin 4 stroke made by Ranger.
