  • Hello everyone! Today we will do a very cool thing-a metal detector "PIRATE"!!! It is quite easy to build and
this is a metal detector that has very good sensitivity!
First of all, you need to make a printed circuit Board for the metal detector "PIRATE". In this video, I will not dwell on how
make a printed circuit Board. In the last video, I explained in detail how to make a printed circuit Board at home.
    VIDEO -
In this video, the process of assembling the PIRAT metal detector will begin with soldering the Board. I picked up all the necessary parts and
I started soldering them into the Board. After about a couple of hours, this tedious procedure was over.
For the body of the metal detector, I picked up a very nice and convenient box, which perfectly fits all the necessary
details. In this box, I pre-fixed the resistance variables, the speaker, the headphone Jack, and the switch.
Now I had to fasten the box to the PVC pipe that would be the metal detector handle. At first I wanted to screw it down
box screws, but then decided to replace them with rivets.
When the box was attached to the pipe, I began to assemble all the components of the metal detector in one piece. I'm in the box
I fixed the batteries, the battery discharge indicator Board, and the metal detector Board itself. After that all I have to do is solder
all wiring and fix them with thermal glue.
As I said, I made the metal detector handle out of PVC pipe. To make it more comfortable, I bent it in several places.
Well, the last stage in the manufacture of a metal detector is the production of a search coil. As a frame for the coil
I used plywood for the metal detector. From it I cut a strip 5 mm wide and bent it into a ring. Then on this ring I wound
25 turns of wire with a diameter of 0.5 mm. On top of this frame, I put the cable sheath. This is the search coil for the metal detector
The PIRATE was ready. I hooked it on the handle of the metal detector by means of two sloping rails.
That's it! The PIRATE metal detector is ready! Now the most interesting thing is checking! I have conducted several experiments that
they showed that this metal detector "sees" a coin at a distance of 25 cm, and a small sheet of metal-at a distance of 70 cm!
All the details on the Assembly and verification of the metal detector you can see in this video!

I noticed there are allot different variations of this circuit. I made this detector, following the circuit you posted bellow. And noticed that the irf mosfet gets smoking hot, and consumes about 500 ma. When i read about it, it said it consumes about 30-40 ma, wich is allot better ofc. I found out thet the problem was the resistor between pin 7 and 8 on the 555 timer. In the circuit you posted bellow it uses 1 kohm and another very look like circuit, they used 47 kohm. So i changed it to 47, and it works perfect, no hot mosfet. And it went allot more sensetive.

Only thing I would have done differently is actually dip the coil in epoxy to fully waterproof it. Excellent build! I'd like to see buried items detection.

bro can you upload a video on how you build the metal detector circuit? i'm trying to build my own but cant find any legit working videos on the net for it appreciated cheers also, i'm using a NE555P timer AND WANT TO SIMPLIFY IT SO NOTHING SPECIAL AND NO EXTRA APRTS ETC CHEERS :)

What should be changed in the circuit for a 25cm coil (22 turns and 380uH)? My circuit failed the air test. It's just noise that would vanish or get higher when manipulating the pots, but no response for any object no matter th size..

there is a few schematics available for the "pirate" metal detector...some show the 555 and op-amp being separate ICs and some show it being the same IC and the one he uses shows the 555 but explodes or de-compiles the op-amp...but I think the circuit is using the comparator part of the op-amp IC and not the amp part if that helps and that is why the thing does not look like a simple IC.
I can't wait to start on this. I have to order a few supplies, but after spending over 20 hours working on a Arduino based one with no luck(not sure what I am missing there) I cannot wait to have a working prototype...and the pirate is supposed to be super flexible and able to be modded pretty well...and will take a wide range of coils...can't wait.

Hello. Here is a link to the metal detector diagram - drive.google.com/file/d/1unfoLBMZp93jawpvb-Fdv7xNJnM56R27/view?usp=sharing
This circuit uses two chips-NE555 and TL072

@@invexlab_world Thank you for the link, however it is "access denied". I think you have to either allow it to be viewed or grant permission. Also, do you know if a 741 op amp which is also considered "general use" would work instead of the TL072?

I tried it on breadboard, but i recomend change the resitor from pin 7 and 8 on 555 to 47 kohm. 1 kohm makes the mosfet glowing hot.
