Laverne and Shirley were two iconic roommates that delivered laughs and a cast of lovable characters. After airing from 1976 to 1983, each cast member pursued quite different lives. Today, we're taking a look at the Laverne and Shirley cast then and now to see how they've changed through the years.

Michael McKeen's breakthrough role was as Lenny Kosniwski. McKean even directed one episode, and the characters became something of a phenomenon, even releasing an album as Lenny and the Squigtones in 1979. McKean also played his character in an episode of Happy Days. After leaving Laverne & Shirley in 1982, McKean played David St. Hubbins in the comedy This Is Spinal Tap with both Guest and Shearer, and appeared in the spoof Young Doctors in Love.
David Lander is known for his portrayal of Squiggy in Laverne & Shirley. He also served as a Goodwill ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Sadly, he just recently died of complications from multiple sclerosis at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, on December 4, 2020. He was 73 years old.
Cindy Williams is known for her role as Shirley Feeney. She left the show after the second episode of the show's eighth and what would become its final season, after she became pregnant with her first child. The show's various producers were not enthusiastic that Williams was pregnant, as her character Shirley was not pregnant. Williams and co-star Penny Marshall had also been feuding for quite some time on the set long before Williams became pregnant. They would reconcile many years later.
Penny Marshall is known for her role as Laverne DeFazio, receiving three nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Television Series Musical or Comedy for her portrayal. In 2010, it was reported that Marshall had been diagnosed with lung cancer that had metastasized to her brain, but two years later she was 'fine now'. Following her recovery she published a memoir, My Mother Was Nuts. She died in Los Angeles on December 17, 2018, at the age of 75. According to her death certificate, the causes were cardiopulmonary failure, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus type 1.
Betty Garrett was known as landlady Edna Babish, but also as Archie Bunker's politically-liberal neighbor Irene Lorenzo in All in the Family. Garrett died of an aortic aneurysm in Los Angeles on February 12, 2011 at the age of 91. Her body was cremated.
Phil Foster is best known for his portrayal of Frank DeFazio. Demonstrating his versatility, Foster embarked upon a literary career and completed a play and two story outlines. In addition to his club work, acting and writing talents, he also ran a workshop for young actor-comedians called the Foster Children. Foster died of a heart attack in Rancho Mirage, California on July 8, 1985 at the age of 72.
Eddie Mekka is best known for his role as Carmine Ragusa, or The Big Ragoo. Since Laverne and Shirley, he's performed in Broadway and off-Broadway, as well as some minor television roles.

I totally agree. The bonus (we didnt realize it was a bonus then) was we not only sat down for dinner together, but watching TV was a family affair (yes, that's a nod Bryant Keith)! Seems like we knew each other better then too. Those days are gone...
Yes, those were the best days ever for television viewing. The 80’s we’re ok too. We had Family Ties and The Cosby Show to name a few. I would say it was sometime during the 90’s when a choice of quality family entertaining tv shows started declining. I still catch some of theses 60’s and 70’s iconic shows on MeTv, Antenna TV and TVLand channels.
One of the best sitcoms that was on TV. There is nothing good on TV like that anymore. I miss those days.

This show was great. Tuesday nights were Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. They were the Lucy and Ethel of the 70s.
They were the original two broke girls.
Happy Days at 8, Laverne and Shirley at 8:30, Three’s Company at 9 and Mork and Mindy at 9:30. ABC Tuesday was the best!❤️

Now this was a show I truly enjoyed 😉 I remember watching it as a little girl when my mom or dad had it on. Now I'm a grown adult with 4 children 3 of em graduated and moved on and only left with 1 child. But I could watch this show over & over again. It was such a great show,with alot of memories ~💙Lisa

Just sad how we all get old and die. I was just a little girl when that show was on 5 or 6. I'm 50 now and my parents who watched the show are gone. Live your life. Don't put things off.

Penny was actually offered the role of Gloria in All in the family, because Norman Lear thought she looked like she could be Jean Stapleton's daughter. She turned it down because she didn't want to work with her then husband. Lear reportedly told her "This show is going to be a hit. You're never going to have another opportunity like this." Penny replied, "Please, my brother is Gary Marshall and my father in law is Carl Reiner. I'll have other offers."

I was born in 1970, grew up on alot of these shows, it's great to walk down memory lane, it is sad to see alot of actors, and actresses that are gone now, but will always be a part of my youth, and it makes me happy to see the one's who are still with us.
Funniest episode I recall out of many was when Laverne & Shirley tried to earn extra money & became human guinea pigs. Shirley wasn't allowed to eat for 24 hours & Laverne wasn't allowed to sleep. This resulted in an hilarious ending after the test was over when they attended a function having Shirley eating her heart out at the buffet table & Laverne rolling over onto the floor. It had me laughing for a while. Sad about Penny Marshall & David L. Lander not looking like he did.
Still miss you Penny; those were great times and can never be duplicated in this negative, gloomy and hateful world we now live in

Penny Marshall (Laverne) was absolutely BEAUTIFUL when she was in her 20's. I loved her lovely smile and her beautiful eyes. It's so sad what old age does to people. 😒

When Gary Marshall died, Penny Marshall said that she and her brother had each lived the life the other one wanted. Gary Marshall had wanted to be a movie producer and had found most of his success as an actor. Penny wanted to be an actor, and achieved her greatest success as a movie producer.

He did age very well. He looks like Squiggy's father. Now Carmine changed up alot. He doesn't look the same at all.
I was nicely surprised. Although I say that, as a rule young ugly man become better looking when they get older and viveversa. Just look at pictures of David Cassidy, Paul McCartney. I thought Lenny was borderline ugly but BOY! Did he EVER turned handsome and distinguished! (sorry in my book).

Apparently Cindy and Michael are the only cast members left. I think Cindy was the cutest.
I only saw it with my family at our grandparents a few times, I don't think the channels we had at home carried it.
My family enjoyed it.
I was a bit young to understand it and wondered why what I thought "their boyfriends" (I didn't realize Lenny and Squiggy were their buddies) were presented as idiots and now realize it was for laughs.
I have caught 2 episodes, this week (by coincidence the very one we see bits of) (Shirley brings home a Canary named Duane)
I understand it now.
I definitely vividly remember the theme song, & it came right back from not hearing it since childhood.
I couldn't ever recall where or why the words
"Shlemeel & Shlamazle" came from...(they floated in my memory "forever" but couldn't remember who said it or what it meant.
Seeing it jogs back memories of my passed away family members.
The world was so very very different...
We saw Happy Days regularly, it had similarities.
Beachcombers was better though, I didn't miss that on Sunday evening. Easier for a young boy to get what's going on in Beachcombers.

I noticed that too. At around 5:49-5:54, Eddie Mekka is listed as having played Frank DeFazio, but about a minute later, it gives the correct name, Phil Foster.
