So I've known I wanted to study neuroscience for a very long time; as a senior in high school everyone is asking what I plan to study and when I say behavioral and cognitive neuroscience that have literally have the reaction you said.

I told my family Doctor that I was majoring in Neurobiology/neuroscience (same thing) and he said "Wow Man... That sounds hard". I said, are you trying to talk me out of it? lol, it was just surprising to hear from my Doctor. Good luck and I hope you're still in medical school.

(super late) Congrats on med school hopefully its going great!! I was wondering if you'd say that neuroscience is also very psychology heavy? I am very interested in both bio and psych and i'm torn between the two, would neuroscience be a perfect way of combining both interests, or is that not a very good reason to major in it?

    • @ALightSwitch
      @ALightSwitch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Angela Bylina thanks! not very psych heavy. I only took one intro to psych class in college. There might be a biopsychology combined major in universities but I haven’t looked into this. There’s also an option to double major in bio and psych. If you’re trying to go into dental or medicine then you could just do a psych major plus premed/predental courses (which have bio related courses).

I also love philosophy, I love thinking deeply about things, such as consciousness, existence. And the coolest part is that my ability to think this deeply comes straight from whatever is going on in my brain. My question is, is Neuroscience the right career for me? Neuroscience will absolutely suit your brain especially cognitive neuroscience. But in whatever you like to dwell yourself you would definitely need some tool to work with that to obtain some result & aathematical abilities comes first in this tool race. You can opt for philosophy of mind too.

During high school I wasn’t very well behaved and I had absolutely no interest in school at all. It was only a few years after I left school that I started develop an interest in higher education but unfortunately I just don’t know if I am smart enough to study the things I am interested in. If I hadn’t missed so much school throughout my life, maybe I would have learnt and understood a lot more about the subjects I will need to understand to study neuroscience. My question is, is it possible for someone like me to ‘catch up’ with general education enough to be able to study something like neuroscience, or is it not worth it for me? I would hate to start working towards something like this only to realise after beginning a degree, I am way too dumb to be studying the subject.

Hey! Im planning on majoring on neuroscience as well, and ive done some research as well. So far ive found that you can be a researcher usually with a PhD, since its a bit competitive! And yes you don’t have to be in medical school to be researcher! I highly recommend the youtuber neuro transmission’s channel ( contains a lot of helpful info ) also, research thoroughly about the field! Hope this helped!

Thanks for the interesting video! Can I ask you some questions?
In September I will start my Psychology undergraduate course and I'd be interested in taking Neuroscience as a master, what do you think? Is psychology a good faculty to pick up before neuroscience? Does it help? Is it possible to graduate in Neuroscience and then work strictly with neurosurgeons and neurologists, maybe following cases together, doing consultations etc.? Working in the research field sounds interesting, but I'd prefer to work in hospitals in a different way, from your own experience and knowledge, is that possibile?
    Thanks for your time!

I took AP psychology in 11th grade and took an intro psych class my freshman year of college. Neuroscience is more biology based and you're learning specifically about the nervous system. Neuroscience knowledge stems from experiments done on the nervous system using different stimuli as well as observations made on behavior. Psychology is more based on observational studies on human behavior. Psychology touches on the basics of the the nervous system like the parts of a neuron and the brain but that's as much as I remember it covered. For me an AP psych class was enough to get into a neuroscience major because I wanted to know the explanation behind the human behavior and how the nervous system functioned. I think it would be difficult to go through a neuroscience master program if you didn't take any upper level neuroscience courses in your undergraduate years. Also you can shadow neurologists regardless of your major if you have the connection. There is also clinical research instead of scientific research if you want to study cases with humans.

Unfortunately, I cannot change to Neuroscience for the first year because the university I chose doesn't have the course... Do you think I should change to a scientific course for a better chance of succeeding at Neuroscience master?

I would say to take neuroscience courses alongside your psych major. If your university doesn't have neuro classes then I would talk to your advisor about what's your best option and what are the requirements. You might be able to go through psych then choose neuroscience masters. That's the closest subject to neuroscience.

I've been thinking about it a lot in these last days... My university offers a Health Sciences course with foundation year (which is perfect for me, as long as I haven't studied biology, chemistry and biochemistry during the secondary school). Health Sciences touches human biology and diseases, which could mean a big springboard for me taking neuroscience... What's your opinion about that? What do you suggest?

I am studying psychology and you can get into many neuroscience masters. A big part of psychology is Biopsychology. At least in my Country (Germany) you have to write tests in pharmacology, basics of medicine, neurophysiology, cognitive neuroscience and Biopsychology itself. Besides of course Statistics and planning scientific studys, which also is important for neuroscience. Therefore you can easily do a master in neuroscience, with a psychology bachelor. Actually here in Germany there are no neuroscience bachelor. So you can get into neuroscience by doing medicine, biology, computer science, math etc. Unfortunately I don't know how this is in your country, but generally neuroscience is a big part of psychology nowadays. Maybe look in other countries if that would be a possible option.
Edit: I just saw this video and your post is 6 years old lol. What did you do know?

When you finish neuroscience than apply to medical school , after you finish medical school will u be a specialised doctor like neurologist or you have to study more years ? Can you please answer my question

    • @ALightSwitch

After neuroscience you spend 4 years in medical school and then apply for residency specialty. Each residency specialty varies in length of training. Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine are 3 years. neurology is 4 years. Anesthesiology is 4 years. General surgery is 5 years

I am doing the first option. If you get your master degree in neuroscience and write both your thesis in a related field no one cares. It's about your master and the thesis, the bachelor is just the foundation.
