Nice job! My layout and display shelves are in Idaho where the odd earthquake is possible. So I cut 3 inch 48 inch long strips of 1/8 inch pelxiglass and mounted them to the front of the shelves and sleep much better that way. Cutting wheel grooves was hard enough with a good table saw and can make fitting the trains difficult. I like your idea of old track and would use that if I had to do it again. Love your videos.
Thanks. I like the idea of plexiglass. I might even have some in the garage somewhere. I’ll have to look. Thankfully I do t have to deal with earthquakes, I mean we might get one very rarely but they are tiny, but who know. Better to be safe.
Thanks! Yeah apartment living and shelving can be an issue. I built a similar shelf when I was in an apartment but the sides went down to the floor to support the weight and I used a thin board on the back to add strength. Worked out pretty well with minimum damage to the wall, just a couple screw holes.
This was a great project. I want to do the same, but my layout is in the livingroom, and I am concerned about damage to the walls. But the main consideration is the weight of my DMIR (Georgeous Locomotive) and the possibility of a flood from a hurricane. Yes we are in Florida. I pack up everything and store as high as possible, and then worry about moisture damage. Need to go north.
There are options that do less damage to the wall, if I were to do one where I cared about the wall, I would construct a shelf with a backing that is structurally strong enough and then hang it from a single board that is attached to the wall into the beams. Then there would o to be a few holes to fill when taken down.
Your train room just became a museum. 👍 It looks great ! Laser straight and sturdy. The white makes your collection colors pop. Nice work Dave. Thank You
Thanks for sharing what you decided in making shelves. Making it as economical as possible with good insites was pleasing to see. Having shelves is a must in this hobby. I can enjoy mind being on the shelf without putting them on the layout. What you did looks great. I share your concern about them falling off the self. Maybe stretching a rope across on each end of the wall would give you a peace of mind. Use of hooks to hook each of the end of rope across the cars would solve the problem. Fun watching you enjoy your lay out. John Huntt
Hey Dave. The shelves look great and I know you are going to love having them on display, as well as freeing up space under and around the layout. I know it was a big step for me too. Thanks for sharing.
I don’t. Unfortunately. I do very gently blow them with compressed air from time to time, but mostly I just lightly brush them when I take them down to run them.

It's user's choice really. I put tracks on my shelves since I didn't want the wheels sitting on unfinished wood with possible corrosion problems resulting. Since the plain wood looks fine to me I didn't bother painting or varnishing it.
@@dagryffynhobby the only thing I have noticed after a while of putting the cars directly on the wood is sometimes there is some grease / oil marks on the wood, especially from the engines. I guess track would help prevent that?
Nice looking wall display shelves, Dave. The blue of the Blue Comet passenger train really stands out. The shelving also adds to the train room in the overall organization effect it brings. Well done!
Nice job! I think that is what I used, some of those 1 x 4 furring strips. I ran them through the planner to smooth them out. Great looking train shelf!

Man, I know how you feel about needing more shelving in the train room. I have two walls and the front of one side of my layout covered in Glen Snyder Shelving and can’t get more because of them being unable to get materials for some time to come. Looked into other options but not near the same. I am like you and most of us, too many trains and cars, too few shelving areas. I have shelves full in the train work room that eventually I’ll be able to store boxes under the layout and cover with some type of material. That will free up my shelves in the work room for scenic modeling and buildings and cars without boxes. I will say you did a very nice job on that wall…excellent presentation. Also I have my Williams set of the Southern Pacific on display! 😂 Have a great week and chill wit the projects. They will still be there next week. Best- Tim
Need. More. Shelving! Always loved the glen Snyder shelves, they just look so clean and display the trains so nicely.. I’ve definitely heard a few people waiting due to materials shortage. That’s frustrating.
Super job Dave. And lots of flat paint hides wood imperfections and gives a great background. You now have a wall of lionel mpc era abstract art. Its beautiful. Have you looked at really cheap shelves from shipping pallets? Their the perfect width for reused 027 track. For more storage ideas you could build a wooden garden gate shelf infront of the wall shelf that swings out.
Thanks! I used a lot of paint, slapped it all over and into all the imperfections. Doesn’t look half bad! I have not thought about pallets. Maybe I’ll look into that. Can’t have anything swing out from this shelf without creating a hazard that I would walk into
Don't worry you soon will want more shelves. I'm on the waiting list with Glen Snyder display systems. They said maybe this june they will be back in stock.
Great job Dave! You did something most us would love to do. When my wife and I started a family 27 years ago, I lost my train room. I’ve always dreamt of getting my train room back, doing exactly what you’ve accomplished by putting my trains on shelves.

Hey Dave, Nice job on the shelves! I have a similar rack of shelves and I've found that alternating the direction of every other train looks really cool. Dave, the shelves look fantastic! Oh yeah, putting up shelves and then putting the trains on 'em opens up a whole new world for you. It gives a train room a cozy hobby shop ambiance and I guarantee you you'll get a rush every time you go out to the garage and see the treasures on the walls. I sure do whenever I go out to my "Chugger Barn!" And I'd put some track on the shelves just to keep the trains aligned and a bit more secure. There's plenty of old 027 and 031 trackage around you can use and of course there's no rush. ah that really looks great ! now you surely have more trains to put on some shelves. Would it be possible to put a thin wall on hinges, in front of you shelves, Say like two long doors. Put new shelves on these doors and voila you could double your space for trains. Open the doors and you will see these trains and close the new doors and you could fill them with some trains that still are in their boxes ... what do you think about that ? 😍 thanks for a very inspiring video !
Cool idea but no space - at least not without my clumsy self walking into them all the time. I do have plans for more shelves, hopefully they won’t take too long
I really like the “wall of Hudsons” theme you started. It’s a beautiful display. As folks look at your trains, they won’t care about nicks & dings in the wood. Well done.
Dave , this looks really cool. Seeing all those shelves filled with great trains right next to the layout makes it a official classic train room. Can't wait to see what else you do around the room.
You do realize that the displayed stuff & shelf needs to be cleaned and dusted from time to time. Your magna traction engines should be placed on sections of track. So your plan to set them on tracks is a good one.
I only dust mine when I take them off the shelves to run them. Since I rotate trains on a fairly regular basis and I don't have much of a dust problem anyway it's never gotten bad enough to worry about. Dust is only a problem if the trains sit on shelves unused for months or years.
I see you don't have any Berkshires or Northern steam engines, or a U36B Not knowing were you door handle is be aware of it hitting a train on the shelf, maybe that is where you placed that first aid kit for that reason. OK in the end you showed us where your logo came from, you borrowed one.. I'm sure you know this but you need that shelf supported directly into the wood at some spots or cement block wall. If mounted just into the dry wall, that will crack in time or from weight and you will have a disappointing mess.
I wanted this shelf for my MPC sets mostly. My postwar Berk is in a safer spot. No worries about the fort handle, the door doesn’t open far enough, the floor is far from level and it bottoms out before hitting the shelf. The shelf is screwed and glued together. Supports are screwed to the beams and to the shelves. It’s pretty solid. Thanks!

One of my two daughters gave already given me an ultimatum because she had my first set grandchild and expects me to teach him how to run the trains just like I taught her.
Get on it! All in good time my friend. Sounds like good motivation though!
Hey Dave I have the Lionel 773 Hudson freight set from 1953
That’s cool!
Now You Have to Build A Shelving down Below.on your layout.
Just did one!
I used the table saw to cut grooves in my shelves.
Headache and time consuming?
Yes
But I'd do it again.
That was the plan but it would not have gone well, my table saw sucks and it’s hard to cut a continuous straight line
ah that really looks great ! now you surely have more trains to put on some shelves.
Well done.
Thank you!
Looks really nice. It brings the whole room together. Did you use all 30 boards or are you planning more shelves?
Thanks Chris. I have two boards left after making another shelf for under the layout. I will use them for something I am sure.
I try and keep my models on shelves, in boxes you lose the beauty of the models, plus it looks really neat
Very true!
Dave , this looks really cool. Seeing all those shelves filled with great trains right next to the layout makes it a official classic train room. Can't wait to see what else you do around the room.
Thanks Bill. It feels more like a proper train room now!
PROGRESS. Ain't nothing wrong with that!
Progress is progress!
You should build smaller shelves for under the layout n make it enclosed like how Eric’s trains did his, maybe without the glass if that’s something
Under the layout is still up in the air. I have a few different ideas.
@@dagryffynhobby can’t wait to see what u come up with 💯
You do realize that the displayed stuff & shelf needs to be cleaned and dusted from time to time.
I’m sure nothin will stay on the shelves too long. All these trains get used pretty frequently.
Roy Scheider visits Dave's layout: "You're gonna need a bigger garage."
Haha! Maybe just better organizational skills!
I see you don't have any Berkshires or Northern steam engines, or a U36B
Not knowing were you door handle is be aware of it hitting a train on the shelf, maybe that is where you placed that first aid kit for that reason.
Thanks!
