Canadian National employee here. We got updated instructions about how to handle the company's own business cars about a year ago, now they must go on the tail end (which does look cool as hell) but before we were supposed to move them on the head end of lighter trains. Also, as a freight guy, I can confirm that we WILL find a way to mess up your passenger car, doesn't matter how many instructions you tape to the windows and doors they will be ignored. Following your car around is a very, very, very good idea. We do have special instructions for handling passenger coaches in freight trains but they're buried in a part of the operating manual that no one ever reads. Oh, and while you're whining about the BS that goes on in hump yards just be happy that PSR didn't close the hump yet.

Not only did Mexico just miss the old Cascades Talgos, they must've also just missed the Wisconsin Talgos that Scott Walker cancelled and ended up getting shipped to Nigeria
the old Cascades taldos were junk at the end. They needed another full overhaul top to bottom. The interiors were beat to shit and they were reeeaaaaally starting to ride rough at the end, particularly in push mode; if you were on the far end of the power it'd knock your beer off the table. I was making 2 to 3 round trips from Seattle to Portland monthly at the end of their service. The new Talgos are much better, but in all honesty the Horizon cars running on the Cascades are more comfortable even though they're getting pretty long in the tooth.

I don't know how you decide what topics to make videos about but it would be cool if you did one about the Boeing light rail train you've brought up a few times before. Another great topic would be the Battle of Palmdale, where the Air Force tried to shoot down a target drone they lost control of and, because of the terrible engineering of the fighters they used, ended up raining more than 200 rockets on the suburbs of Los Angeles.
This was a great episode! I hope nothing bad happens to anyone for having spoken about this but, considering that everyone is upset if anyone talks about war and therefore focused on censoring the rest of us for that, you should be relatively safe, if for no other reason than that people are too distracted by the prospects of potentially be in or almost in the third world war. In any case, this podcast was an excellent break from worrying about that. Weird how introducing another level of human foolishness helps to relieve the stress from thinking about another. I have been to Mexico on several occasions since I don't live that far away from the border and I speak Spanish from having lived in Peru. I've even been to Mexico City, but only the airport and not even for very long since I literally barely made it through customs before I had to literally run through the airport to catch my plane. I probably would have missed it had the nice people who worked at the airport not told me exactly where to go and how to get there. Luckily, since this was the second time I was on my way from the US to Peru, I already spoke Spanish so that made it easier for them to quickly tell me where to go and that I totally had to run to the other side of the airport, which I did. I did see much of the city taking off and landing since I always try to get a window seat. Mexico City is beautiful, as are the mountains around it, although they are hills compared to the mountains near where I actually live and compared also to the Andes. The other times I went to Mexico were just taking the train to the border and then walking across into Tijuana, where I got drunk and talked to random people. There's a really cool thing there where if you buy a beer, they will also bring you tacos, although I haven't been there in a while so I don't know what sorts of things may have changed. I also bought asthma inhalers for very cheap down there. I don't know if it's still the same but walking back and forth between Mexico and the US, for a US citizen at least, is much easier than driving. The line for cars to get back into the country was really long but the line for people walking was pretty short and there was no line at all for walking into Mexico. In fact, the Mexican cop who was at the border had his automatic gun rested on the wall next to him and didn't even look up from his phone when I walked it. I wish our country was like that too because it's even a pain in the ass for citizens to go through customs. The one time that I flew into Miami, they called a supervisor over to do some additional interrogations of me because I hadn't spoken a word of English for like a month before that moment so, as it turns out, when I open my mouth again in English, it comes out with an accent until I can get my brain back into English mode again. Not so good when talking to la migra, even if you do have a valid passport and it is, in fact, you. I think they were literally considering taking me into one of those interrogation rooms but the supervisor decided not to do it, probably because they don't want American citizens to know how they treat our friends from countries to the south, even when they do have the right to come here. Sad. Anyway, in all my trips to Peru, the one thing I was sad about is that they didn't seem to have trains there at all except for one going from Cusco to Machu Picchu (well, the bottom of the mountain it's on anyway). I can see why it would be quite a convoluted process to have to train going over the Andes because the elevation rises quite quickly and I know some of our most dangerous grades in the US are near where I live because they go over mountains that are abrupt and steep for the same reason as the Andes: plate tectonics. I hear you have to have special permission to take a train over the Cajon Pass and for good reasons since there have been a few unfortunate incidents spilling out onto poor old Duffy Street. Well, having taken the bus into the Andes, I don't even have to look up the numbers to know those mountains are substantially taller than the mountains created by the San Andreas Fault. I mean I saw glacial lakes up there, which are amazing, and a bunch of people on the bus got altitude sickness. I didn't get it on the bus but I did get it when I went to see Lake Titicaca (of course the Tities are on the Peruvian side and the caca is on the Bolivian side or vice versa if you're from Bolivia, which is a running joke between the countries). In any case, I can only imagine the sort of crazy runaway trains such grades would likely cause. However they could run a line down the same sort of route as the Panamericana freeway. You would definitely need to put in some safeguards in case of large earthquakes and resulting tsunamis but the Japanese have that figured out so they could do it. They could definitely have commuter trains and putting rail in on the jungle side of the Andes would probably be quite useful since a lot of travel there uses the Amazon River and the other many rivers there. The only other way to get around outside of just the local areas around the main towns is by plane. It might be a bit hard because much of the rail would have to contend with torrential rains but it's not like the Amazon rainforest is the only place in the world where there are thunderstorms all the time so it should be possible. The real question there is whether it would be practical since it would cost some money, most people I visited there didn't have much money and, if they had to go somewhere, they would just take a boat or perhaps even build one. Where I went, most people just made most of the things they needed, especially if they lived on the outskirts of the town. A train might be useful and it would certainly be a novelty for the people there. Whether they'd ride it, I don't know, but you could move goods around, which might make money since I've been on more than one boat that got stuck on a sand bar in the middle of the Amazon River and a bunch of us had to get out and push the boat off of the sand bar. That was weird because you have to just keep on stepping since your feet don't seem to ever actually touch the bottom of the river, which is weird.

Bring Skooter back! We have like 7 more episodes from this one mess of a story about trains south of the border.
Edit: Good god, do it soon he may not last too long, wholly shit how did this train not crash. Praise Bud, it don't brake.
Halfway through and I've completely lost track of what actually happened in this story. Thankfully, I've been sufficiently reassured that "we'll get there"

the old Cascades taldos were junk at the end.
When ever anything happens in the world, I channel Liam and his clearly non actionable threats.
I hope lots of people have a nice time, too
This was a great episode!
