Honestly thank you for this because I was very scared my reptiles were causing something to happen, when in reality they’re not making much of a difference, especially in energy bills. I live in the US, so it might be a bit different, but yeah!!! I’m showing this video to anyone who says my pets are hurting the electricity.
Thank you, this made me way less worried about my energy usage. My dad can get dramatic about bills so I thought that I was taking a huge toll on the family, but in reality stuff like our fans + AC, cooking equipment, and devices use way more energy.
No problem :) I know when I lived at home with my parents they'd often go 'oh yeah I wonder how much those reptiles are costing'. Looking back at the time it was probably more like 10p a tank a day, I would happily pay towards that 😂
I would never blame my buddy for consuming a couple of bucks per year to stay alive while I make a 300 dollar bill per month for electricity that I probably don't need to survive
Energy bills in Alaska are a lot different than the rest of the world since ya know it's cold enough here that people absolutely will die without their heat in the winter. My bill really didn't change at all upon getting reptiles. I got a leopard gecko last year and I didn't notice any change in our energy bill. I got a ball python and saw no change in our energy bill. However I had a couple of roommates move in for a short amount of time last year and I noticed that while they were here our bill doubled. They had a a television and several gaming consoles and the tele and at least one of the consoles was on all the time. *I will say my leo doesn't have UVB yet. He has a heat pad and an LED day light that I turn on in the morning. His enclosure has a ton of enrichment but I'm still slacking on the UVB. I'm building a custom enclosure for him that will include overhead heat and UVB so I don't know if that will change energy usage at all but I'm guessing not. My BP has a CHE and a heatpad that are on 24/7, Leo's heat pad is also on 24/7.
On a similar subject, a video on how to care for reptiles during a power shortage would be interesting. Because that is also a reality of an energy crisis.
This is not very in depth, but in our flat we keep a bunch of disposable chemical heat packs for just that kind of thing. We've had power cuts or electrical problems a few times, and having those on hand during the crisis helps a lot. I don't think they're too expensive. Something else that can help is a UPS, or some other type of battery supported system, but those are often way too expensive.
@@phelan_pt yep, heat packs are always great to have around, even for stuff like going to the vet! For the heatwave part I think rebecca covered it in her heatwave video. But heatpacks and natural light (for their internal cycles) are a good start, yep. I was wondering if there were other ideas, maybe a hand spray to replace humidifiers for examples.
It's great to see more attention being brought to this Reptile centres at the moment are absolutely filled to the brim (my rescue just this week has been asked to take in 2 leopard gecko, 3 crested geckos 4 corn snakes and a royal python) with this being similar every week for every rescue People are getting to the point of just dumbing reptiles in gardens and motorways because of the fear of the energy crisis and it shows no signs of slowing down unfortunately
And that right there is the scariest part not just because of the dangers the poor animals will face but also the damage some of them could cause to the environment as invasive species if they manage to survive the winter and how they could force the government to increase restrictions on what reptile species can be kept and bred like has already been done for some mammals like Siberian chipmunks.
That's so sad :( Yeah I know a lot of the time the main RSPCA doesn't even want to help with reptiles. Thankfully there's a dedicated reptile one, but I believe it's the only one, and its on the south coast so many people won't be able to access it, so people are just dumping them. I do wonder how many people genuinely think the reptiles are costing too much, or how many people have just got bored of their animals and are using it as an excuse.
@@leopardgeckotalk there are a few rescues scattered around (I'm lucky enough to work with a group that helps to try and vet rescues to see who is actually able to help) but there still is not enough to meet the demand. Between this and how many people got animals in lockdown it's definitely hard to tell which reasons people are actually rehoming
@@leopardgeckotalk It's a similar problem with vets, too. There's no exotic vets in my city anymore and I keep having to tell people no, you can't take them to the Pdsa. They'll very likely just make guesses and put them down for being in brumation. And again, it runs into the cost of the animal thing. A disturbing amount of people consider non-mammals like disposable objects and won't bother paying more than the initial cost for anything except the initial enclosure. Then there's folks like my friend's dad who got a baby tortoise from a guy in the pub about three years ago for £20 as a gift for her then ten year old brother. After a while it showed signs of being sick and the brother stopped bothering as much so my friend was given temporary charge. During this time I was over visiting and she asked me my opinion since I had my beardie for a long time by that point. The little one could sit in the palm of my hand and had snot bubbles coming out of both nostrils and constant wheezing, but the main issue I was asked about was the eyes being glued shut. Suspecting an advanced lower respiratory infection, I urged her to get her dad to take the eccles cake sized chelonian to my exotic vet asap 40 miles away. How much he shouted out in horror when he had to pay £60 for treatment to treat the tortoise's herpes that it likely got from being wild farmed or wild caught. He saw it as such an outrage that he stole one of the children's toys in the waiting area for his other son when nobody was looking and didn't go back again. He "joked" about just throwing it out of the car window on the way back home. And after a week he decided he wasn't gonna do any more even though the tortoise improved a lot. Handing the animal in to the rescue centre I used to board my dragon in. But he lied and said he found it and so didn't bring the medication or tell anyone about the herpes. His attitude is far from rare. My own parents were the same when my £40 bearded dragon had an urgent healthcare emergency when she was 5. All she needed was to be spayed and the surgery cost £300 but I was never left alone about it. Years and years later I was still getting told how stupid I was even though she survived and completely recovered. Because my parents and people like them refuse to understand that the cost of an animal is not the value of their life.
Nice video. My issue in this current heat wave is keeping the cresty cool enough in the day. Air conditioner had to be used and is at the moment. Nightmare. Thanks for putting perspective on the thermostats and UV requirements and costs 🤟🏼🤟🏼
Thank you for the advice. And I have a question, I have a new (about 10 weeks old) leopard gecko and I was wondering how long does it take for a new leopard gecko to stop being super shy and also how long it takes for it to get hand tame? because when I open the terrarium it runs to its hide and don’t get out of there in the whole day.
thank you very much for this video! im trying to get my partner to let me get a leopardgecko, but he was very much against it because of the energy price increase. Im gonna look up our Provider and will calculate it.
Crestie lovers are lucky, especially in my living city HK. We have high avg humidity and the avg temp is VERY suitable for crested geckos. My elec bills are almost staying the same.
From what I've been able to find out from social media posts on local reptile rescues, the majority of reptiles surrendered have been bearded dragons, which are diurnal and so need more UV and heat than crested and leopard geckos because they also have larger enclosures that need to be kept warm. However as someone with 9 reptiles now (one ackie monitor, four bearded dragons, a children's python, a gargoyle gecko, a spotted python and a crested gecko), I've discovered that they are the least expensive out of everything to run. Although there are ways to optimise energy usage. Unfortunately most new reptile keepers are sold the LEAST efficient setups and by the time they've bought it all, it's too late. They have big glass white elephant enclosures with mesh tops that are energy black holes that don't even provide proper care and it burns them in such a way they'll see buying an entirely new setup that is more energy efficient as a scam so would rather surrender the animal they paid £40 for than fork over another £300 to keep the animal healthier and happier AND save electricity usage in the long run. I still have my 12 year old glass vivarium from my first bearded dragon and still hate its guts because my parents wouldn't buy me the big wooden one instead. It's the worst one, bar none. I keep one of my pythons in it now and even with two heat lamps and two heat mats on thermostats, she still caught a respiratory infection last year from being too cold so I had to throw even more heating equipment in it. Meanwhile, the similar but younger spotted python I have has been having no problems at all with a single heat mat and light inside of a wooden vivarium. I'm going to build her next enclosure instead of buying now. Much easier to create something better insulated and waterproofed when it's custom as well as bigger. But again, a lot of people buying the cute little baby beardies in a shop aren't going to put that level of money and effort in.
Yeah to be honest I keep my crestie and chahoua in a glass tank because it's not great with keeping in heat, so it kind of helps keep them cool, but a wooden or PVC viv is a game changer with regards to keeping in heat for reptiles that require those higher temps.
Thank you for all of the advice I’m getting a leopard gecko in September and i can’t wait I’ve been watching your videos for weeks preparing i will be getting a deep heat projector. What should i name him or her??
I highly recommend using a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat instead, they’re actually more natural and beneficial than DHPs! The levels of infrared A and B they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength).
Never ... I've just got two new geckos (one Leo and one crestie) I will never give them up unless I fell so ill I physically couldn't look after them)...I do have fibromyalgia and am 45 so I do worry about getting old and not being able to take care of them but these will be my last geckos I will ever own
Off topic question... Has anyone had experience with or know if I can add a crested gecko into a vivarium with the cleanup crew (isopods and springtails) on the same day?
I got a leo in febuary and now I am moving him to a bioactive 30 gallon and am super nervous. I can save money and make him stay in a ten gallon longer so I could do a background but it would make me feel bad. I just dont want my one regret to be not having a background. Any advice?
I feed my crested gecko 2 crickets with D3 on it and I wanted to know if she’ll be okay? There’s no uvb in the tank and I had just gotten her. She used to be hiding on top of the tank and plastic leaves that I had gotten her, now she’s at the bottom of the tank on a piece of wood, any help on this?
She gets Pangea/Repashy as her main diet, right? UVB would be beneficial but they can live without it. It’s normal for them to go to the bottom of the enclosure sometimes, they may do it to thermoregulate. Make sure she has enough clutter and plant coverage/foliage. Just to make sure the top of the enclosure isn’t too hot: does she have a lamp, what’s the temperature, and how is it being measured (analog thermometer or digital)?
Is the energy crisis causing companies to increase their prices? That's where I think there would be a more significant change. But yeah a video game console or PC uses way more energy than having a few reptiles.
depends really on the pc i have a high end pc with a power hungry 400 watt gpu and a 5950x it uses 650 watts when gaming and 750 if i am downloading too. a ps5 uses 350 watts 2 of my enclosures can beat this usage alone and i have 8 in total with 6 being in use. My frilled dragon and basilisks use more energy than my pc alone and i think my geckos use 500-600 watts in total for 4 enclosures. Its not that bad although that depends on your financial situation.
Our energy bills doubled almost over night, meanwhile I've heard a lot of the main energy companies have made massive profits - so it seems like they're just being greedy.
In part I believe the current economic situation is being used as an excuse to dump the animals. If you really loved them then you would realise the costs are pretty insignificant. How many pets were bought on impulse during the pandemic and people are now bored? I fully understand that people need to re home their animals for genuine reasons as life changes but as this video and others by Chaz shows, running a viv really is very insignificant and if you looked at behaviours you could switch things off and reduce what is called your phantom load, or the electrical items that remain on 24/7. I am very fortunate to be in the position to have recently added solar and I have 12 vivs all with uvb, led and heat bulbs and I barely pay for any electricity during the day. In fact some days after my export I am being paid! Hope this video makes those considering giving up an animal for cost reasons to think again.
Hi, I wanted to ask a question about my female leopard gecko, she started digging a lot (she is 11 months old) so I was wondering if she might be ovulating.
Maybe, but not necessarily. Digging is a natural behaviour for leopard geckos even when not ovulating. Besides, it’s starting to get late in the season for ovulation.
Could you do a full cricket set up? My crickets keep dying so I'm changing almost everything. Their new bin is 4 times bigger than the last one, I'm setting a timer to feed them and I'm buying coconut wood chips as substrate. 2 boxes r lasting Mr barely 1 month when they could probably last 2
I don't know what's more shocking, the relatively low cost of providing a gecko with heat and light or the low number of views and likes this video has received so far - more people need to know this information!
Yeah TH-cam just doesn't share my stuff anymore :( Unless people come on, watch the video, engage with it (likes and comments), and even share the video, I don't know what else I can do :/
@@leopardgeckotalk That sucks, particularly because you clearly put so much time and effort into your videos. This one was very useful because it put my mind at rest about how much keeping my gecko was costing. I used the same website you did and was stunned at how relatively cheap the heating and lighting is.
I keep over a dozen reptiles as well as tropical fish. I do live in the UK and as of the last reading, my reptiles run anywhere from £75-£100 per month. For me that's mental that one or two reptile homes are panicking... chill out. We spend that one a single good meal at yo sushi ffs
Hi I saw another one of your videos of you reviewing leopard gecko tanks and I'm getting a leopard gecko as a birthday thing it's not at all impulse I've done my research and wanted one for around 5 years now but the person who bought me it got a corn snake tank and I thought it was fine and I've already set it up but idk what to do now after seeing that video and it being the worst to get and we don't have the money to get a whole new tank and I just wanted a professionals opinion on the situation and we haven't yet purchased the leopard gecko
*pence. A "quid" is slang for a pound. Other than that, and the fact that a dollar and a pound aren't worth the same, the system is similar, 100 pence = 1 pound.
weve had our leopard gecko for a little over a month and this is the first time getting maggots in our crickets theres not maggots in our leos tank just the crickets btw!
I'm actually thinking most of my ridiculously high electricity costs are because my neighbours are stealing some of it. Which will become more obvious with the energy crisis. I tell people I spend £50 a fortnight on electricity in a one bedroom flat during the summer and spring and it really doesn't make any sense even with 11 exotic animals. I put my lot in boarding when I went to visit family with only the fridge running over Christmas and it cost me £5 a day electrics. That's not the pets doing that.
@@Faliat there's a device that you can put in between the outlet and the thing you're plugging in, to visually see how much electricity it's using up. Then you need to know how much you pay for kw/h, and do some maths. There's calculators online, like the one Rebecca used in the video, that make it easier to add up and compare.
You know when people send in pictures of their enclosures and you edit them to give them ideas what programme do you use.I have just got a 132cm x45cmx90cm terralantis paldarium and im going to make a paldarium for 2 Chinese crocodile lizards Also i have 7 lizards a frilled dragon, 2 basilisks a tokay a chahoua a leachie and a green eyed gecko as well as a pc that uses 650 watts when gaming and im in most days and my gas and electric is £250 a month north west uk and i waste loads by leaving stuff on and in the heat wave had 2 aircons going so don't worry guys as i am runnin 6 jungle dawns led and 6 arcadia pro t5 i have 2 250 watt heat bulbs and 4 50 watt deep heat projectors 2 250 watts ceramic heaters 2 hygrostats 7 thermostats 2 humidifiers and 2 whole mistking ultimate systems one up stairs and 1 down i also have 4 heat matts and on and off stats . I am actually expanding my collection as i am going into large paldariums now that have 300 watt water heaters filters and heat lights etc.
Because it takes a lot of money to install them and not everyone can drop that money on the investments, especially if you living paycheck to paycheck. Also, a lot of people rent their house, which means the can't make that decision. And if the landlord does allow it, they don't always allow you to use it..
We are in a fortunate position and have just had them installed but you’re looking at £7k. It’s a big wedge of cash that many people simply cannot afford which is a shame as when our pkwh hits over 50p in October it will only take about 4 years to get your money back.
That’s not the point of this video. And if you feel strongly about animals being easily rehomed then maybe you shouldn’t invest in getting a pet in the first place. It’s not as easy as you think. Ask the plethora of shelters FULL of animals. And pets are family….I know some people won’t agree with that, but for me my pets are my everything and one of the few reasons I still wake up in the morning. I’ll cut back on my own personal expenses before I even think about giving them up.
Family who can skip on a few hours of watching tv or drink a few less cups of tea/coffee to save for energy bills comes before pets (who should be part of the family)? Sure, if you're REALLY in a pinch and cannot afford basic living anymore but if you still got a phone and time to watch youtube, then I'm sure you can save those 2bucks/month somewhere else ..

Can you do Trying all Pangea Diets please (:
Hi, I wanted to ask a question about my female leopard gecko, she started digging a lot (she is 11 months old) so I was wondering if she might be ovulating.
Maybe, but not necessarily. Digging is a natural behaviour for leopard geckos even when not ovulating. Besides, it’s starting to get late in the season for ovulation.
Could you do a full cricket set up? My crickets keep dying so I'm changing almost everything. Their new bin is 4 times bigger than the last one, I'm setting a timer to feed them and I'm buying coconut wood chips as substrate. 2 boxes r lasting Mr barely 1 month when they could probably last 2
I'm almost certain that she already did a video on that, look through her old feeder insect playlists!
Yeah check out my 'Feeder Insects/Inverts' Playlist, I'm sure I've done a few setup videos
You use a deep heat projector for all your geckos? I thought you only used a DHP for one of your geckos, or maybe it was an old video haha.
She uses DHPs for all of them now. Although halogens are better.
What’s the current setup?
Hi
So how does british currenty work? A pentz = cents, pound = dollars (im assuming that right) what is a quid?
*pence. A "quid" is slang for a pound. Other than that, and the fact that a dollar and a pound aren't worth the same, the system is similar, 100 pence = 1 pound.
I'm offering to put money to my dad to cover some electric as well
I live in the uk and soon I’m g
Eating a creastie
this doesnt have to do with the video but i cant find anything on it i have maggots in my cricket tank how do i prevent this
weve had our leopard gecko for a little over a month and this is the first time getting maggots in our crickets theres not maggots in our leos tank just the crickets btw!
I had this problem once before after giving the crickets watermelon. What have you been feeding them lately?
I have a leaperd gecko
I’d say leave the alarmists to themselves, the energy difference is not that much especially if you have a small family or are single.

Green energy cost will kill the mid to lower class
I know I'm not in the UK (cause I live in the states) but... Why not just use solar panels they're cheaper and more eco-friendly.

Family comes before pets. Pets can easily be rehomed
Pets are family.
Excellent topic, Thank you!!
