My main 'issue' with half-frame cameras is that sometimes I struggle to finish the roll! Awesome intro btw!

Agreed! I had a roll in there over 2 or 3 months at one point! Thanks :-)

@@pushingfilm It's about overcoming the FOMO that comes with having limited exposures. Not taking that extra shot, because you are afraid of needing it later. I think that it's about just taking the shot regardless of how it turns out, common with a digital camera, but not with film. The nice thing about half frame, is that you can buy the more expensive, finer grained film and get more out of it :)

It takes me forever to get through a 36 exp roll. I can't even imagine how long it would take with double. lmao

    • @CertainExposures
      @CertainExposures 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

You naturally start to shoot more so it only takes twice as long :-)

For those who think the roll will last too long or that the default portrait orientation is not to their liking, I say you might be in for a surprise. In my case, I avoided half frames for those reasons - in standard 35mm format, I thought even 20 frames were too much and I rarely used portrait orientation. However, one day I bought an Olympus Pen FT simply because I knew something like that wouldn't ever exist again. When I loaded it with film and went on one of my walks and started using the camera, suddenly a whole new way of viewing my common surroundings appeared. I expected to make maybe four photos and ended up going through two rolls - 48 exposures - in just over an hour. That camera is so much fun.

I have an EE17 and a Demi C. Two of my favourite cameras! Perfect size and compactness. I was originally looking for a Canonet as my first rangefinder (and second film camera), but the EE17 popped up on eBay underneath as a similar listing to the Canonet I was looking at. It was one of the nicest looking cameras I’d ever seen. So I did 10 minutes of research about the camera, half frame format and diptychs and bought the EE17 instead. Managed to get a Demi C last summer and I believe it’s the only other interchangeable half frame camera next to the Olympus Pen F/FT. Which is also a beautiful lustworthy camera.

Omg, it's such a great timing)
I just shot a roll through my mint FED micron and I thought It was going to be a perfect everyday camera. Of course I had my expectations quite low, as I've only shot on slr cameras before, but unfortunately photos turned out even more underwhelming, than I expected 🙆😅. Exposure is set automatically there and it seems to be really inconsistent across the photos and the distance scale seems to be off as well. Yes, I may be not be very good at guessing the distance to the subject, but even then it's way too many blurry photos 💁.
Overall, I don't think I will be shooting on it again any time soon, but it's nice to see you've got great results with your camera) Thanks for the video 🌞

Half frame is quite close to the APS-C sensor in size, so a 28mm lens would give a field of view comparable to a 40mm lens on full frame.

      @@punkrachmaninoff .
It's all to do with the angle of view which is dependent on image size and len's focal length.
So a 30mm focal length lens on a Pentax APS-C sensor would give the same angle of view as a 45mm lens on full frame 35mm.
      Canon APS-C is slightly smaller.

Canon was something of a late-comer to the 1960s craze for half frame cameras. Most half frames were lightly built, cheaply designed, and had less than impressive lenses (by the standards of those days; compared to later P-n-S cameras, even their worst look good). Canon put out relatively few models, but they were all built to go the distance, and they all have good to great lenses. I don't think there is a pooch among them. I have a Canon Dial and a Demi EE17. Even at half the format size, either will blow away imaging from junk like an XA or any Mju of your choice.

Haha these things are my nightmare eh. I own an Olympus Pen F and the results and fantastic, its just I struggle to even shoot a 10 shot roll on my Pentax 6x7 half the time, let alone 70 odd frames.
I'd have to be in a very trigger happy mood/

Unless you have a rangefinder, lower aperture numbers don’t make sense.
For things far away (ca. infinity) in the dark you won’t have problems with movement.
For subjects inside, in the murk, you can’t guess distances accurately enough for apertures lower than 2.8.
And even that is pushing it.
So don’t take the bait for big lensed half frame cameras without rangefinders (is there even a rangefinder HF?).
Some of the lure of halfframe, apart from film economy, is exactly the DoF allowed by the small format.
Don’t take some of that advantage back by using big apertures.
