  • WebDAV means "Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning". A WebDAV server can act as a cloud based file server over the HTTPS protocol.
In this video, we will talk about how to setup a WebDAV server on Windows Server operating systems (Server 2022, 2019, 2016 and 2012). The steps include:
    Install IIS.
Enable WebDAV and add an authoring rule.
    Enable "Basic Authentication".
Order or import an SSL certificate.
    Configure HTTPS.
Create user accounts and folders, and set access rights.
Map a WebDAV drive and access files.
    DriveHQ's cloud WebDAV server.
    1. The WebDAV server feature is included in Microsoft's Internet Information Server. Let's install IIS first. Make sure to include "WebDAV Publishing" and "Basic Authentication".
    2. Launch IIS Manager, navigate to the default website, double click on WebDAV Authoring Rules, then enable WebDAV and add an authoring rule.
    3. Click the Default Web Site, double click Authentication, then enable Basic Authentication and disable other Authentications.
    4. Click the root node of IIS Manager, then double click Server Certificates. For security, you need an SSL certificate to enable HTTPS. You can order an SSL certificate from a certificate vendor or import an existing one. The domain name of your SSL certificate must match with your WebDAV Server's DNS name.
    5. Right click on the Default Web Site, then select Edit Bindings and add HTTPS support.
    6. For each user, create an account on the server, then create a subfolder in the c:\inetpub\wwwroot folder. Set the subfolder's security to Full Control for the user account.
    7. Now you can map a WebDAV drive from another computer (WebDAV Client PC) in the same network. The WebDAV URL is:
    SERVERNAME/
    or
    SERVERNAME/FOLDERNAME
Note the SERVERNAME is the server computer's DNS name. You can log in with a username and password on the server computer.
You can access the mapped drive like a local drive.
When opening a Microsoft Office file in the WebDAV drive, it will display a login dialog again. It is because Microsoft Office uses its own WebDAV client bypassing the mapped drive. DriveHQ's WebDAV service does not have this problem.
To use it as a cloud file server, you need to make the server accessible from the Internet, and make sure it is fast, secure and reliable.
It is much easier to use DriveHQ's Cloud File Server. DriveHQ offers the most efficient and reliable WebDAV Drive Mapping service. It has better features at lower cost, and it can be setup instantly. For more detailed info, please visit www.DriveHQ.com website, click Cloud Drive Mapping.

Wow, great video. Well done. I really needed this useful information regarding WebDAV on Microsoft Windows. Thank you. How can you authenticate users with Active Directory to the WebDAV Server?

Thank you for your feedback. The WebDAV Windows server just needs to join the Active Directory domain. Then the WebDAV client can log in with the domain account, e.g. DOMAINNAME\USERNAME.
DriveHQ is a leading Cloud File Server/WebDAV Drive Mapping service provider. You might want to consider our cloud based file / WebDAV server solution: th-cam.com/video/RA5R3jbnzQM/w-d-xo.html
It is extremely easy, offers more powerful business features and works from anywhere. It can replace all file servers in multiple locations.

Do I must use a domain or can I type in my IP there so I dont have to buy one ?

Most likely you need to use a domain name. If the WebDAV server will be accessible from the Internet, then you need to use HTTPS for security; and if you use HTTPS, then you need to order an SSL certificate for your WebDAV server. The SSL certificate requires a domain name. It is much easier to use DriveHQ cloud file server/WebDAV Drive Mapping service, you can watch this video for more details: th-cam.com/video/RA5R3jbnzQM/w-d-xo.html

How to enable EFS support on WebDAV?

I don't think it is supported. However, if you use DriveHQ's WebDAV Drive Mapping Tool, or DriveHQ FileManager / DriveHQ Online Backup, you can use the Encrypted Folder feature. It uses Client-side Encryption, that is, your data is encrypted locally with your own encryption key, then the encrypted data is uploaded. The encryption key is never sent to the server/cloud. So it is extremely secure. Even DriveHQ support staff cannot decrypt your files. It is extremely important that you safeguard your key.

Does it work in every network or just in the same ?

    • @DriveHQCameraFTP
      @DriveHQCameraFTP  ปีที่แล้ว

If your server is accessible on the Internet, then it works in every network. Otherwise, it only works within your LAN. In most cases, you need some kind of hosting service to host your Windows server or VM. It is possible to configure your router/firewall to make your server accessible from the Internet, which usually requires a static public IP address. Another option is to use DriveHQ's Cloud File Server / WebDAV Drive Mapping service. It is better than regular WebDAV servers and requires no learning curve. The SSL certificate requires a domain name. If you only need to use it within your LAN, then you don't have to use a domain name. You can use plain HTTP-based WebDAV URL. (Note: the Basic Authentication is not supported if you use plain HTTP)

This video tells you how to setup a WebDAV server on Windows Server OS. If you are tech-savvy, have enough network bandwidth and a static IP address, it might work well. Otherwise, it is easier and better to use DriveHQ Cloud File server. It can be setup in just a few minutes. For detailed step-by-step guide, please watch:
