    K2 Poacher is actually one of the stiffest skis under foot ! Which makes it very versatile but I heard complains from pros, that are not heavy enough and would love a slightly softer flex under foot.

    Hi Jens, I've been following you a while, mainly to improve my piste skiing, rather than freestyle. I think I learned my skiing too late in life for freestyle (I was 42 on my first ski trip, 55 now) so I ski on piste and I have been making steady improvements in my skiing. I weigh around 105kg and I'm 188cm and I go skiing once a year skiing reds and easy blacks, but my question is related to skis and ski length. I always get given different ski lengths / types depending on which resort / hire shop I go to (be it France, Austria or Sweden) and sometimes the skis feel great, and other times they feel too soft or too short or too long, etc. So given my height, weight, experience, age, etc. what length of piste ski should I be hiring, and due to my weight should I tend towards stiffer skis? I'm basically asking for a bit of help as to what I should be asking the hire shop for, rather than just taking what they give me, as the range of skis and options is just baffling to me.

    • @jimgooch3704
      @jimgooch3704 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I know this question is a year old, but I'll drop this just in case anyone gets to it. Jay, it's hard to answer your questions without knowing what specific ski you're thinking of renting. Example: Compare the volkl and the K2 Jens reviews above. The Volkl (all Volkls, really) is a beast. Stiff, fast will a full camber (no tip or tail rocker). Let's imagine that ski is 180cm if you pull the tape from tip to tip. If you subtract the length of the little turn-ups at either end, the length of the ski's edge that actually contacts the snow is about 170cm.
      It's also a stiff ski. To ski it well and create multiple turn shapes, you've got to work it: strong, active inputs from your ankles to your hips. If you get in the back seat, it's likely to run away with you.
      A ski like that for a guy your size and ability, you would't want any bigger than their 177/183 (or wherever they come out before they get to mid-high 180s or 190s). Err on the side of shorter and you'll have more fun throughout the day and on the trails you're typically skiing.
      The K2, on the other hand, is softer. More importantly, however, it has both tip and tail rocker. If you were to take that ski and set it base down on a table, then get down next to it so you can see where it touches, you'd see this: The front part of the ski doesn't touch the table until about 25-30 cm back. Then there's a low arc through the footbed, then about 15-20cm before the tail the ski touches the table again and arcs back up.
      Those angles up at the front and the back are "rocker" and they do wonders for skiing in powder and bumps and variable snow. They also subtract about 30-40 cm from the ski's "effective edge:" Compared to a 180cm Volkl with 170cm of effective edge, you have a 180cm K2 with about 145cm of effective edge.* Combined with a softer tip and tail, these skis will be more forgiving of imprecise inputs and laid-back skiing.
      So for an "all mountain" ski like the K2 or the very popular Nordica Enforcer, a guy your size and ability will have a fun day on a 183-188cm ski -- a length that could make you miserable in the stiffer, effectively longer Volkl.
      In general, tell the rental shop you're an advanced-intermediate recreational skier. They should be showing you accessible, fun, easy-going skis in the all-mountain category. Become familiar with current-year models in that vein so you have some idea of what you're looking at, and I would (again, for someone your size and stated ability) stick to skis shorter than low 190s.
      Make sense?
      *There's a lot more that goes into "effective edge." For example, when the ski is flexed in a carved turn in soft snow, much more edge of a rockered ski will be engaged than in my example. I'll leave to the internet experts to correct me. (As a friend once said: "It's the internet. If you post a video of you sneezing, 100 people will be there to say your form is off.")

    Hey Jens, I am currently looking for a ski to begin my park adventure but also have a rather good carving ability ... The main working range of my ski will be carving and sometimes short turn-based. I think for me it will be a good option to sacrifice a bit of power on the slope for a twin-based ski, so I can also progress in my freestyle area.
    How Soft can I go with the ski until I lose the carving performance? Or is it best to buy a hard ski in favor of a good slope ski, with some freestyle performance?
    Thanks and Greeting

    I would love to see a video from you on how you prefer to size playful park and freeride skis, especially related to mount point. For example, Compared to a directional ski mounted at -10, do you upsize on a rockered freeride ski mounted at -4, to get more effective nose, keep the length similar, or shorten it for lower swing weight (an a much shorter nose)? I know there is no right or wrong, but id love to see your preferences. Live your videos!

    • @tradeka4206
      @tradeka4206 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nick Anscombe IMO no chart can tell you what length is good for a specific ski. I like shorter skis for my park skis and longer for free riding and pow. It also depends on the specific ski you’re getting. A good rule of thumb is anywhere between your chin and the top of your forehead when standing up with the skis stood up in front of you. Anywhere in that range won’t be too short or too long

    Having such a hard time making a decision on what skis to get. I've skid a few seasons now on seasonal rentals and I'm ready for my own pair(s) of skis. Obviously I'd like to just get 1 pair of skis for cost and ease of use purposes. Some days it's just ice and you don't know it's going to be, but I also like to scoot off into the trees and powder every once in a while. I'd also like to start learning some tricks. Some days I just want to cruise groomers, Other days I want to punish myself on technical runs. And then other days the powder is good and you just gotta go find it and ski it. Kind of lost regarding what skis to get lmao.

    I find ski weight is important to me as most modern skis are very light which result in me getting thrown around a lot in cruddy firm conditions and they just tire me out. Luckily I have kept all my old heavier skis that should see me to the end of my skiing lifetime as I dont ski so much now.

    Im probably not the only one saying this but what would you say is the best ski for those like me:
    Riding 90% of the time piste and liking fast turns and speed->the völkl
    BUT even though i am an intermediate/advanced skier i am an beginner park skier so the Völkl wouldnt be that good.
    I do not want to be that only in the park guy i just want to learn some tricks to do when riding down the slope eg 360,back/frontflips and maybe sonme grabs.
    Because i am riding mtb i am not an absolute noob on popping/jumping and knowing the rotation while flipping/spinning
    Would you say the völkl fits me better because i am only riding piste ... or the atomic(would also maybe think of the k2 poacher) because i will often be 340/380 ing ...

    Hey great vid :-) anyway, I got 2 things on my mind.... 1) seems to me that normally skis for freeride are not only wide, have rocker and are light, but quite often, they are not really curved (thin on waist, thick on the ends) more like almost a straight line or curved a little. Here all of them seem to me kind of quite curved ones, so.... what is actually the effect of this? just the radius, or does it have some effect on anything else? 2) What length am I looking for? ... let's say I want to start a bit of slackcountry skiing, but I got to ride slopes now and then, because of friends....

    Love your videos! Old video I know but can you comment on your opinion between the K2 poacher (2020) vs your daily driver the Bent Chetler 100? Trying to pick my next ski and I want a good twin tip that isn't too soft but can do a bit of everything and can still carve well. I'm an intermediate. Is there even much difference between them?

    Hi, I have a question.
    In which type of ski would you set Faction CT 1.0? Maybe it's between the poachers and Völkl Revolt?
    Thank you

    I have an alpine ski background, I am 175cm height and usually use 165cm slalom ski. I am going to buy atomic punx 7 with 176cm(with cheap price). I have no experience doing freestyle ski. What do you think about it (170cm is out of stock so I have no choice). Thx

    • @Wenasd
      @Wenasd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm 182 and used to ski 168 carving skis, this season I got a pair of 176 atomic punx and at first they felt like I was swinging a pair of lamp posts. I also had no freestyle experience. The longer tail threw me off big time at first, I just couldn't turn at all, but after a few days I got used to it and now I have no problem at all. So you're definitely gonna have to go throw a learning process, but you get used to it eventually. Also, I guess it depends on how good a skier you are. I'm definitely not an expert skier, maybe advanced though.

    Hi, what skis do you recommend for Tree skiing for a 6’4” 220 lbs skier?

  • @alexflynn8514

    Any ski recommendations. I just started park this past season and can do 180s, grabs, boxes, and some rails. I almost have 360s down. I have a pair of volkl ledges which are stiff and was liking for something with more flex. I am also a racer and am used to a stiff stable ski. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    What would you recommend for me? I’m intermediate to advanced, I’m 5’3, I weigh about 110 pounds. I’m also looking for a all-mountain Park and pipe ski. I like a stiffer ski as well. I do have a all in budget of $500 for skis and bindings. What do you think?

    • @Joemels
      @Joemels 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Magical Game bindings: market griffons for sure. The base model may be a bit too much binding for you but, but I would just go into a shop and ask. They are safe and reliable and not too expensive. Buy them online and avoid shops if you are working within a budget. Nice bindings help prevent malfunctions, resulting in injuries. As far as skis go, I would go to new schoolers and make an account. That’s the best way to get multiple opinions. I use it for any ski related advice. Hope this helps

      Magical Gamer Atomic infamous is pretty neat, it’s on the stiff side for landings but it flexes enough to butter and press. It’s also the end of the season now so prices are low.
