Empire was a FANTASTIC movie and I was enthralled. It provided enough story that I didn't need to see the first movie. When I finally got to see A New Hope, I was disappointed. At first I thought it was a mixed bag of fun and childish fantasy, but by the end I felt I was hit by a wave and all I could do is watch the action, hear the wonderful music, and feel an absolute elation. My first thought was that it was a CLASSIC. A movie that would be loved for generations. A thrill ride and a joyful one, and movie making that was both an homage to the past and a path to the future, and a film that would make a lot of little boys happy. The audience burst into applause at the end. It was an absolute moment of bliss. I cannot describe how high I felt for hours. I haven't felt that high since.
My dad was 13 years old when Star Wars came out and he remembers he and his friends didn’t have money to buy tickets for all three of them, so like the rebellious kids they were they snuck into the back door of the theatre and were able to see the movie and it changed their lives He was able to see Empire and Jedi with his friends (except they actually bought tickets and didn’t need to break in to the theatre) and they loved it the late 70’s and early 80’s must’ve been a great time to be a kid
I was a teenager in 1977 and saw Star Wars on opening day. I was floored! It was fantastic! I came home and read the reviews for Star Wars in the paper - all of the reviews were negative. However, after Star Wars was clearly a blockbuster (a month later), all the reviews were positive! I’d love to see a comparison between the reviews on opening day, and the reviews a month later.
Hunter Lawrence - Good point! It seems like the critics base their appraisals on the budget of the movie instead of whether they genuinely liked the movie or not. One problem is that older critics simply can’t think like kids or young adults, but they review kids’ and young adults’ movies anyway. I certainly don’t think like my teenage relatives, and I can barely remember how I thought when I was a teenager or young adult. I don’t have the same sense of awe anymore. I was truly awed by Star Wars. I was awed by lines like “If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” It helped that I thought Alec Guinness was a really awesome actor (I had seen “Bridge on the River Kwai” which was an amazing movie).
Being a fan in 2019 be like: "You really like the prequels over others? You prequel apologist!" "You really like the originals over others? Ugh, you OT supremacist..." "You really like the sequels over others? Lol, you Disney shill, how much are they paying you?" "You really like at least something in all the movies? You can't call yourself a true fan if you don't dislike (insert thing)"

*Commenting on HelloGreedo’s video until he hearts my comment day:* 53 I can’t wait to see you read the reviews for Return of the Jedi. Those will be unnecessarily harsh..
? That tends to be the pattern for films that aren't as good or strong and consistent. I think the critics can be over harsh and obnoxious a time but it's creative and makes me laugh and just think "these damn pricks know how to use words" and majority of the movies that cop it more so than others are generally more deserving in places than others. I don't think ROTJ is a bad film at all and the consensus of the critics support that statement (though I think believing a critic's opinion to be more valid than another is ludicrous for anyone that thinks this way, however coming from me that may be hypocritical as I tend to use the consensus of critics on a film as evidence for support when in discussion lol) and I have it 4th on my star wars film rankings
@Geralt of Trivia I love the opening scenes with Vader and then the whole act at Jabba's palace and then I love Yoda's scenes as always along with the final confrontation with Vader vs Luke and all these moments are among the very best in Star Wars but I don't think the rest of the movie is that good.

@@Idk-fl2ed I'm not saying you have to like Endgame or Infinity War or even Star Wars but the reviews come off like they are better then the people who do. You don't have like a popular thing but don't have to be a dick about it either.
Interesting reviews. Contrary to what is usually claimed now: I think that from the start (1977) Star Wars had mixed reviews from "specialized" film criticism. I am not sure either whether Star Wars was so universally claimed as we tend to hear today compared to the Prequel Trilogy or the Sequels. Those reviews, or at least some of them, to some extent dismantle this ingrained idea that the Original Trilogy was well received. I would even dare to say that not all the audience liked Star Wars just like today.
First Galactic Civil War (Rebels+Original Trilogy) vs Clones Wars (Ep. 2: AOTC+TCW (Film/Series)+Ep. 3: ROTS) vs Second Galactic Civil War (Resistance+Sequel Trilogy) What is the best Star War? Ep. 1: TPM has no war but one battle.
I would say The Clone Wars. The animated series gave me a new outlook on that conflict with its focus on the Clones. 1st Civil War is a close second. I can’t rate the Sequels war yet because it’s still an ongoing conflict with very little in terms of additional stories to flesh it out
I remember a Reddit post that someone made comparing an ESB and a TLJ review and they were surprisingly similar 😂 Obviously ESB is a masterpiece and far better but it was an interesting post! EDIT: the movies are all good in my eyes, maybe I should’ve said ESB is more iconic or more loved by the OT generation or something. You know what I meant, not as many people hate on ESB compared to TLJ
Perhaps I'm an outlier, but I wouldn't say that ESB is "obviously... far better" than TLJ. While I do prefer it, I don't think it's that clear and easy of a decision to choose between the two.
Everyone's a critic, but the difference between then and now is today literally everyone can have their say, and with minimal tech savvy, say it to the whole world. People actually relied on professional critics back in 1977 to tell them what a movie was about and suggest whether it was worth their time and money to see it.
Can you imagine people in the 2040's looking at the fan-reviews of The Last Jedi, and going "Jesus, did these people thought they were watching some kind of visual Holy Bible? I mean, sure, not the BEST Star Wars film, but these people act like they were witnesses to a massive genocide. It's just a freaking movie!"
Simple-Commentator-not-really 2040’s a 60 year old Geeks+Gamer’s: RiAn JoHnSoN iS wOrSe ThAn HiTlEr!!! TLJ iS wOrSe ThAn MeIn KaUmPf!!!! DiSnEy iS wOrSe tHaN nAzI GeRmAnY!!!!
Is there a good way to do this for the Clone Wars movie and then also the show? A lot of people will agree that the movie is not good, but the show is very good and that it only ever got better with each Season. I am curious what the professionals have to say about both.
I can't help but notice that reviewers who didn't like Star Wars approached it from a similar angle. They panned the movies child like innocence and lack of (as they would call it) a deeper message. If a movie isn't filled with biting cynicism and bitter social commentary, what good is it? Rather than subverting and deconstructing the themes and archetypes of our collective mythos, Star Wars had the unmitigated gall to embrace those themes. As they saw it, Star Wars was an unsophisticated light show for the deplorable masses of the lower castes. People well beneath their own high station. The condescending, sneering, elitism exhibited be many of these critics makes me want to vomit. It warms my heart to know that history has not kind to their Star Wars reviews.

My dad was 13 years old when Star Wars came out and he remembers he and his friends didn’t have money to buy tickets for all three of them, so like the rebellious kids they were they snuck into the back door of the theatre and were able to see the movie and it changed their lives
He was able to see Empire and Jedi with his friends (except they actually bought tickets and didn’t need to break in to the theatre) and they loved it the late 70’s and early 80’s must’ve been a great time to be a kid
Now it seems to be the opposite. Everyone loves it when it first comes out, and then starts to hate it once it's been out for awhile.
As usual, Ebert does it best...
Damn all these reviews trying to sound smart. Just ends up confusing everybody.
Love this kind of videos, it’s just so awesome to see the parallels between then and now
4:24 that could not be any more truthful
Being a fan in 2019 be like:
"You really like the prequels over others? You prequel apologist!"
"You really like the originals over others? Ugh, you OT supremacist..."
"You really like the sequels over others? Lol, you Disney shill, how much are they paying you?"
"You really like at least something in all the movies? You can't call yourself a true fan if you don't dislike (insert thing)"
1.5/10: NOT ENOUGH SAND
You had me at “But Wipes” sending $5 to Dollar Shave Club
I didn’t even understand half of those reviews. How the style of written reviews changed that much since the 70’s?
This video, is definitely one of the good ones
Thanks Hello Greedo. I'm craving Cracker Jacks now.
You're amazing...what else is to be said?
JOY GOULD BOYUM are you from the future cause dauym! We are absolutely living in the the canonization of comic book culture.
I NEED more of those ads, Greedo!
Yep... there will always be those who "get" a thing... and those who don't... no matter if the thing is aimed at them (or not). And that's human nature (as well as showbiz). 😊
Damn, some of these are brutal 😂
5:25 hold up, but wasn't something about the original is that the start was slow back then???
And now I fully believe hellogreedo showers with his helmet on

I can’t wait to see you read the reviews for Return of the Jedi.
LaRone CT-HK47 I agree!
Geralt of Trivia it was a very inconsistent movie if you ask me
This video was great, loved your stuff since 2016
and we love you for doing these videos Hello Greedo.. I likr to think it helps the Star Wars fan community collectively put things back into perspective .. and get the fandom back to a happy place where we all love it for didferent reasons at different times because Star Wars has been great for different reasons at different times .. for everyone these movies are ... enjoy them you should ..
Jeremy Shofner The only real shame is that it’s probably gonna take another 15 years or so to start really settling in.
@4:59: I bet that business was run by a Ferengi. Where do I send my money! hehehehehehehe

I’ve come to believe that HelloGreedo is the Yoko Taro of youtube.

Some of the bad review sound just like the pretentious review of Endgame and Infinity War.
Or some people who genuinely don't like something? It's all about opinions.
@@Idk-fl2ed I'm not saying you have to like Endgame or Infinity War or even Star Wars but the reviews come off like they are better then the people who do. You don't have like a popular thing but don't have to be a dick about it either.
Badman3000 just out of curiosity, what was that review about?
@@katherinealvarez9216 I don't understand your question
@@badman3000 Sorry, what were the pretentious reviews for Endgame and Infinity War talking about?
Roger Ebert was a great critic.
I love you man! Keep it up!
Thank you Greedo, for making these videos.
Thanks for review my favorite Movie ever really some people were salty about it
Interesting reviews.
Can you do the same with Empire Strikes Back?
Your Plinkett at 5.00 is uncanny
What a great video, keep it up!!
First Galactic Civil War (Rebels+Original Trilogy) vs Clones Wars (Ep. 2: AOTC+TCW (Film/Series)+Ep. 3: ROTS) vs Second Galactic Civil War (Resistance+Sequel Trilogy)
What is the best Star War?
Ep. 1: TPM has no war but one battle.
I would say The Clone Wars. The animated series gave me a new outlook on that conflict with its focus on the Clones. 1st Civil War is a close second. I can’t rate the Sequels war yet because it’s still an ongoing conflict with very little in terms of additional stories to flesh it out
Do Empire reviews next?
That was the first one I did.
Greedo!!! When are we gonna get more clone wars episodes?
06:07 I just chocked on my food you bastard xD
I love these videos.
This was fun 🤓🤙
I do suppose that a new hope is rather different without the context of rest of the series
Perhaps we can sort this out by making Ugnaughts and Ewoks fight to the death.
@@Oooga-Chaka lololol I think this would be a very practical & sensible way to sort things out!
Empire and Last Jedi are my two favorites :)
TLJ is in my top 3, but I find ESB to be the better film (the pacing is a difference maker), with ANH taking the #2 spot
wow. newspaper and magazine writers sure used to use more sophisticated language back then
Thanks greedo
If you actually used shampoo on your helmet, you are dedicated to this ad.
Please do this for Return of the Jedi Reviews back in 1983.
Were people really hyped back then?
I used to hate you cuz it annoyed me when you hate on the prequels, now you act like an adult I like you
Classic video. Thanks Hello.
Big fan greedo
I ain't even mad at the ad it was funny
Any ad with a stormtrooper helmet in it makes me smile.
This is a great reminder that the original film (and trilogy for that matter) were not as universally loved as some people today think.
Some critics got Star Wars wrong back then, just as they are still doing today ;)
imagine myself in 1977??? Ok! So i am in the comunism regim and i can't see star Wars a New Hope
I’d probably be listening to music or getting high or something. Whatever kids did back then.
