  • This here is a 1963 American Motor Company (AMC) Rambler 440, it’s actually a pretty clean little car, but it’s not running, let’s see if we can get it going again!

We had the 1963 Station wagon version of this car! My dad traded our 1960 VW bug for it to a serviceman heading to Germany so he would have a better chance at maintaining a VW over a Rambler wagon. I recall my parents and me, my brother (a baby at the time) and my two young teenage sisters. We used the front passenger seatback function for my sisters to sleep during the night while Dad drove us from Michigan down to Tucson in Arizona. Mom and I would sleep during the daytime in the passenger seat/bed. The car had a 6 cylinder motor but I don't remember if it had a 3-on-the-tree manual transmission or an automatic - but the tranny lever was on the steering column. I also recall a long and hot stop stuck in New Mexico due to Vaporlock which my dad knew nothing about at the time. We finally got rolling again after a few hours in the miserable Summer heat and finally got to Tucson just in time to find out that our new house was infested in FLEAS from hell so dad set off a US army issue cannister of DDT and we spent the next two days in a hotel until the house was declared okay for habitation. Oh and the car was baby blue with the corresponding color-keyed interior fabrics.
Dad missed our VW's robust build so he ordered a brand new 1968 red VW bus from Germany and that vehicle made the same back and forth Arizona to Michigan and back to Tucson, every summer the day after school let out to get out of the Southern Arizona heat.
Nice to see that your friends Rambler started up and sounds good! Thanks for sharing this with us.

Magnificent! My first car was a 1967 Rambler American and my second car was a 1976 AMC Hornet.

I love them as my uncles sold them for years and my family had several Ramblers. Biggest issue with them is rust. Their unibodies simply did not hold up in states with snowy winters. Such a shame.

I sure do remember that car, as there were a lot of them running around in the 60's. They were economical cars that ran for a long time. The 400 model was the top of the line for the American series. Good video.

63 Rambler WINDSHIELD WIPERS are *vacuum powered* so their speed increases when you are cautiously driving slowly in the rain.

    • @toyotaphil54
      @toyotaphil54 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

And they slow WAY down when you accelerate briskly. My parents had a 64 Classic 440 wagon with vacuum wipers back in the late 60's.

This car LOOKS basically clean but I hunch there are unforeseen issues that'll require a diligent looking into.

When I was a kid the neighbor had one exactly like that, I used to wash and wax it for a couple bucks. I don’t think it’s the same car, that was in Seattle around 1968 or so.

No kidding? That’s neat. Even though this one has been repainted once, I’m pretty sure it is still the original color.

I pray that floor is devoid of any corrosion what with that carpet being attacked by rain water. Rust is a frightening issue to behold on these Rambler Americans.

On any AMC really. Such a shame. Think that was part of the problem as to why they lost resale value so bad.

I have the 330 station wagon version of that car. (sans engine, but a 3 speed/overdrive) Those are the individual adjusting reclining seats, you should be able to find a comfortable position to drive it. The vacuum wipers should rest at the bottom of the windshield. Your wife probably won't like the manual steering. The 63 Rambler Classic I learned to drive in, was 6 3/4 turns, lock to lock! You probably wont find an easier car to work on, but there are an awful lot of grease fittings on the front end, that need regularly serviced, to keep the trunnions in good shape! 😊👍

There’s a lever down near the floor beside the seat you move that lever and presto the seat slides back !

That was waaaayeeee too easy. Looks like a good runner.. may as well toss a pertronics on it 🤷‍♂️ super unfortunate about the paint tho.. looks like a 10-15 year old paint job on the cheap sprayed over who knows what.. been there done that.

Original and proud owner of this 63 Rambler was my dad... he had it painted approximately 30 years ago to match the stock color.

I've had numerous Rambler models and the only bad ones were the aluminum engines! Junk! I like the next generation American body style and Javelins/AMX.
